JDCAP is hosting our annual Juvenile Justice Conference Sept 24-27 at the Penn Stater, State College PA with special sessions available for 3800 Licensed facilities providing services for juvenile justice referrals.

 

Please share this announcement will all impacted juvenile justice facilities.

 

In response to the Bureau of Human Service Licensing recent announcement regarding the implementation of PREA Standards for Juvenile Justice Facilities, JDCAP is shifting the focus of our annual conference to offer an agenda focused on PREA implementation in PA.JDCAP is working with the Bureau of Juvenile Justice Services, the PREA Resource Center and DPW to offer sessions designed to address PA specific issues for PREA implementation.

Mental Health Training for Juvenile Justice

The Mental Health Training Curriculum for Juvenile Justice (MHTC-JJ) provides juvenile justice professionals with basic information about adolescent development, mental health disorders commonly seen within the juvenile justice system, effective treatment services for youth, and the important role of family.

PREA Essentials

The PRC recently released a new resource page on its website titled PREA Essentials . This page is intended to guide professionals in their implementation of specific standards. Each category contains (1) a brief synopsis summarizing the standards in that category; (2) links to an online version of those standards; (3) links to helpful resources related to those standards sorted by correctional facility type; and (4) where relevant, a discussion of some key issues raised by those particular standards. The issues and resources are not exhaustive, but rather offer a snapshot of those that may be of particular interest to practitioners working to comply with the standards. Webinar on Youth Suicide Prevention Curriculum for Juvenile Justice Staff

On July 16, 2013, at 12 p.m. ET, the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors will host the Webinar "Shield of Care: A Suicide Prevention Model for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System," sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This 90-minute Webinar will explore the "Shield of Care," a suicide prevention curriculum for staff working in juvenile justice residential facilities. Presenters will discuss how this system-focused model can assist juvenile justice staff in developing policy, connecting with youth, and working with other staff to prevent youth suicide. The free training manual, slides, and videos are available online.

New "It Gets Better" Bullying Prevention Video Available Online

The U.S. Department of Education has posted a new online video as part of the international It Gets Better Project, which inspires hope for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth facing bullying in schools. The video offers personal stories from Department of Education staff who have been bullied, discusses ways to support students experiencing bullying, and highlights the importance of addressing this problem to effect change now to protect LGBT students.
