Guide to Developing Pre-Adjudication Diversion Policy and Practice in Pennsylvania

Youth Suicide: Facts & Myths webinar will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM EST. The Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office for Safe Schools is offering an online professional development opportunity.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth between 10 and 19 years of age.  However, suicide is PREVENTABLE.  As an educator, you are in a key position to pick up on warning signs and to refer students for help.  Join Dr. Matthew Wintersteen, Ph.D. co-chair of the Pennsylvania Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative (PAYSPI) to learn about suicide risk factors, warning signs and intervention/prevention strategies.  Becoming familiar with these facts and remaining watchful can lead to successful interventions and provide the necessary supports for youth in times of trouble.

Act 48 credits are available.

To access this live webinar, please go to http://vclass.cciu.org/index.html

Registration is not required and a limited number of seats will be available. You will have the opportunity to log onto the system approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the webinar.  If you are unable to join the live webinar, it will be recorded.  However, the Act 48 credits will only be offered during the live session.

Conference Award Nomination

Below is the nomination that JDCAP received for Levi Taylor - Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, Staff Person of the Year.

As supervisor, along with the full support of his peers and colleagues, it is with great pleasure I would like to submit for nomination, Levi Taylor, for "STAFF PERSON OF THE YEAR".

Mr. Levi Taylor has worked at Shuman Detention Center as a Youth Care Worker for eight years. During that time he has won the detention center's "WORKER OF THE YEAR" award three times! He was the recipient of the "Bob Rader Award" from the National Juvenile Detention Centers Association, identifying him as one of the top detention center staff in the nation. The only sports team with a record that good plays at Heinz Field on Sundays. Mr. Taylor's contributions to the detention center are manifested daily by the enthusiasm and energy that he approaches his assignments. Mr. Taylor needs little supervision; with his experience he understands how the daily operations work and he handles his work along with anything he feels should be done. As a Floater he interacts with staff, probation officers, judges, parents and supervisors on a daily basis. All of his enthusiasm is born out of his commitment to serve the youth that come through our doors. When in the units he can be seen frequently holding impromptu discussions with residents and relating real experiences and realities in a language and manner they can understand. He even uses a short walk to the gym as an opportunity to mentor residents.

When not at work, Mr. Taylor leads his peers as a point guard for Shuman's basketball team. A byproduct of playing is that he collects tennis shoes. Recently, he donated thirty pairs of shoes from his collection to children in Georgia.

As a supervisor I understand that there are no perfect employees, and Mr. Taylor is not perfect; but as a Youth Care Worker in a detention center, I know of no better person.
