The future home of entrepreneurship @ Dartmouth
President Hanlon announces new innovation center
College President Phil Hanlon D'77 first announced the initiative, which will help students form business and social entrepreneurial ventures, in his inaugural speech as part of his vision to provide experiential learning and foster interdisciplinary activity.
The Innovation Center and New Venture Incubator slated to open early 2014 will be located on the first floor of 4 Currier Place, south of the Black Family Visual Arts Center. Renovations to the space are hoped to begin next month
The initiative will focus primarily on the early innovation and formation stages of entrepreneurship, in contrast to the 60,500-square-foot Dartmouth Regional Technology Center, which provides educational and infrastructure support to later-stage ventures. The New Venture Incubator will provide additional resources, mentoring and funding to those who have more defined entrepreneurial plans.

Dartmouth Entrepreneurs Forum 2013
A smashing success with over 225 in attendance
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this year's Dartmouth Entrepreneurs Forum in Sunnyvale, CA. A special thanks to Jeff Crowe D'78, Taylor Holt D'09 and Ed Yip D'04 for organizing such a great event.
This all-day event included panels featuring Dartmouth tech leaders, networking sessions, presentations from successfully launched Dartmouth startups, and a competition for seed/early stage Dartmouth startups with over $30,000 in prizes.
Over 40 Dartmouth companies applied to present in two competitions, and we have handpicked twenty teams to pitch for alums from Norwest Venture Partners, GGV, Interwest Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures, Crosslink Capital, TCV, and other Silicon Valley venture firms.
The winners of the competition were:
First place $25,000:
Rinse - "Seamless dry-cleaning and laundry service"
Over 225 alumni registered for the event, and it was great to see how well represented Dartmouth is in startup teams, venture capital firms, and tech's hottest companies in Silicon Valley.

Women-Led Startups in Boston
NEVCA is dedicated to makingBoston home to the best women in technology
* reprinted from BostonInno (next generation of Boston News) *
A Comprehensive List of Women-Led Startups in Boston was recently published. The New England Venture Capital Association commissioned a recent study of entrepreneurs in the Boston area to learn more about the number of women founders and management team members in venture-backed companies, as well as the perception of what it means to be a woman raising money and building a startup.

Boston wants to be home to the best
women in technology.
|
The bad news? Our survey found that Boston's startup community could be far more inclusive to women. So what can we do?
The NEVCA is dedicated to making it explicit that Boston wants to be home to the best women in technology, and we're starting by sharing this list of 75 women-led startups that are leading the way. We can't wait to add more.
The good news, there are at least 3 Dartmouth alums on the Boston list helping lead the way:

From Dartmouth to a Wine Startup
...via investment banking and
tractor driving at Sullivan Vineyards
by Pooneet Kant D'07
When I graduated from Dartmouth in 2007, I started work as an investment banker at J.P. Morgan in New York. I made it through four years at the firm, and saw the tumult of the financial crisis first hand (especially when we moved into Bear Stearns' old building). Eventually, I decided it was time to leave, and decided to move to Chicago to attend business school at the University of Chicago.
Before starting school, however, I wanted to do
| I showed up the first day wearing a button down shirt and boat shoes, and was almost laughed out of the place. |
something interesting with my summer. I always had a passion for and interest in wine, and so I decided to try to get a job at a vineyard. The only issue was that I had no actual wine industry or vineyard farming experience at all! I ended up getting an awesome job at Sullivan Vineyards, a small, gorgeous vineyard right in the heart of Napa Valley by emailing 80 + vineyards and wineries. Here is what my email looked like, along with the initial response from Sullivan Vineyards, the place I ended up interning (and my story includes ending up with Winestyr post MBA)... You can use code "Dartmouth" to take $15 off any order on the Winestyr site...and if you need any recommendations or have any questions feel free to shoot me an email at pooneet.kant@winestyr.com. Cheers!

After 40 years in advertising...
I founded a company
After graduating from Dartmouth in 1957 I started my career with the Chic ago Sun-Times and then spent 40+ years in advertising. When I "retired" from a division of Omnicom here in Chicago I didn't just want to travel, play bridge, golf, etc. I decided to start my own company. I founded RetiredBrains.com as a job and information resource for boomers, retirees and people planning their retirement.
I also took some time and wrote a reference guide for retirees and people planning their retirement: Invent Your Retirement: Resources for the Good Life. I also write regular columns for a number of sites including Dow Jones MarketWatch. Running RetiredBrains, writing for publications, being interviewed by the press, speaking at association meetings, conventions and to groups of seniors is actually keeping me busier than I was when I was working full time in advertising; however I love what I am doing.
Would people buy a mattress without trying it, if we did everything else right?
by Ricky Joshi TH'02
If you asked me what type of business I'd be starting when I graduated from Dartmouth, selling mattresses would probably not be on the top of the list. But everyday its what I live and breathe as
the co-founder of Saatva. Saatva was founded approximately 2 years ago and is one of a series of brands, Warby Parker being the most note- worthy, that are trying to disrupt the retail landscape by selling exclusively online. Our value proposition is pretty straightforward, by eliminating many of the costs of traditional mattress retailers, we're able to offer a higher quality branded product for less than half the retail price.
When we started the business the gamble was whether people would purchase a mattress without tryin g it, as long as we did everything else right. It turns out the bet has been working; we're growing rapidly, are up to around 35 employees, and are launching a second sleep brand in the ne xt couple of months. In many ways Saatva feels much more like a tech company. We have designers, developers, and online marketers. E-commerce has been a nice ride, in many ways its just another way to approach tech.
Saatva is based in Austin, if you're ever in our neck of the woods, stop by and say hello, or check us out online!A 12th DEN City chapter recently launched Austin! I was fortunate enough to have been involved with the DEN very close to its inception. Since then it's been amazing to see how greatly the DEN and Dartmouth entrepreneurship have grown!
Editor's note:
DEN Texas launched in June 2013 and Mahalia Asanaenyi D'02 is already powering DEN Texas across the state (Austin, Houston, and Dallas!). To learn more about DEN Texas click to www.dentexas.com.
