Greeting from Mark Halla
"Hello" and "Thank You" for opening our e-newsletter!
We hope you will find our updated e-newsletter interesting, informative, educational and fun! Amongst other things, we have added some new features which include a monthly Bible verse, a calendar of timely things to do in your yard, employee and customer spotlights, a special discount coupon for e-newsletter subscribers only, etc...
As I write this greeting, the snow has melted, there is mud beginning to appear everywhere, and the roads are beginning their annual heave as the frost begins to leave the ground.
I look forward to seeing many of you very soon and I hope you enjoy some of the many exciting changes we've made this winter, including the acquisition of our second location at the old Halla Nursery site!
Some of you know that part of our Mission Statement is... "to enhance lives and lifestyles by developing positive relationships and experiences..." We hope this newsletter does just that, and we welcome your ongoing feedback and suggestions.
Before you read on, I can't help but reflect on the struggles many of you may have faced this past year as our economy faltered, jobs were lost, and lives were turned upside down. I want to remind you (and me :-) that nothing comes our way that God isn't able to handle!
With that said, I have found it helpful to memorize Psalm 121:1-2 "I lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth."
May the Lord Bless you this season with His power, His peace, and, most of all, His presence!!!
Sincerely,
Mark Halla
Steward

THE BUZZ
Second Mustard Seed location opens in April!
We are delighted to announce that the Mustard Seed is sprouting a second location that opens this month at 10,000 Great Plains Blvd. in Chanhassen. If that address sounds vaguely familiar, it might be because it has been the previous site of Halla Nursery, founded in 1942 by the grandparents of our owner Mark Halla, Steward of The Mustard Seed. Halla Nursery closed its doors this past November, and will open officially April 13 as The Mustard Seed at Halla Nursery. Mark, who spent most of his career in the family business before opening his own business, The Mustard Seed, in Chaska in 2004, says, "It's like my life is coming full circle, like a chance to reclaim the promised land...I hope everyone who visits us feels our same sense of excitement, but, mostly, that God is glorified by the work of our hands!

IN SEASON
The value of trees...and the proper planting of those trees
 | |
The Mustard Seed sells a variety of trees and shrubs.
|
Trees can increase your home's property value 15 to 20 percent, say sources such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Arbor Day Foundation. But beyond property value, trees can do so much more. The trees you plant remove carbon dioxide from the air, produce oxygen, give songbirds a home, improve water quality, fight erosion, cool and shade your home and neighborhood, break cold winds to lower your heating costs, and, well, you get the idea.
We at The Mustard Seed sell a variety of trees and shrubs. See us early for the best selection.
When you visit us to choose your trees and shrubs, we can also advise you on the proper planting of trees: When to plant: Newly planted trees grow best when they're not exposed to extremes of heat or cold, so generally this means in the spring and fall.
Digging: Digging the right-size hole-two to three times as big around as the roots of the tree and slightly shallower than the roots go down-is important, too.
Positioning: Positioning a tree is important. When you're actually doing the physical planting of a tree is the only chance you will have to orient it, so take a few minutes to get it right.
Finishing: Also, finishing up properly is still another consideration. Use the soil that came out of the hole to backfill around your new tree.

Time for the spring pond clean-out Early spring, before your water garden completely awakens from its winter dormancy, is the best time of the year to perform a pond clean-out. Ideally, the cleaning should take place before the water temperature in the pond gets above 55° F. If a cleaning is performed after bacteria colonies form, the ecosystem will be thrown out of whack, and your pond will go through another "green phase" before your bacteria colonies re-establish themselves again. The process of cleaning out the pond is fairly easy and can usually be done in less than one day. Be prepared, however, because it's a messy, smelly job! If you don't feel up to the task or you don't have the time, we can come out and do it for you. For your convenience, you can read more here on the steps involved in a spring cleaning as well as the materials needed. Please feel free to call The Mustard Seed at 952-361-9954 to answer any of your questions or stop by to purchase your pond supplies, fish or plants.
