Each April we teach "Expressive Arts in the World" - a Level Two course designed to inspire our Certificate students with the wide variety of ways that the expressive arts are practiced.
Guest presenters are integral to the success and meaning of this intensive, and, this year we have 9 wonderful people we wish to thank!

MITCHELL KOSSAK

Mitchell started off our intensive - via Skype - by introducing the idea of different kinds of rhythms in life, and led a rich, multi-modal experience with breath, sound, movement, and visual image. It was a great way to dive in and get connected, with oursevles and one another.

Mitchell Kossak, Ph.D, LMHC, REAT,  is Associate Professor in the Expressive Therapies program at Leslie University, Cambridge, MA. He is Executive Co-Chair of IEATA and Associate Editor of The Journal of Applied Arts and Health.  
His clinical work combines expressive arts therapies and body-centered approaches with a variety of populations addressing issues such as chronic pain, recovery from trauma, depression, anxiety, life transitions and difficulties in relationships.   He has written extensively and presented his research on rhythmic attunement, improvisation, psychospiritual and community based approaches to working with trauma and embodied states of consciousness.      
Upcoming:  Mitchell is working on a book which will be released sometime this fall.

 

DEBORAH MCKEEVER

Deborah generously shared her own creative process in designing Expressive Arts experiences for different kinds and populations and groups. She followed this with a hands-on creative puppet-making session and sharing circle.
 
Deborah McKeever, MA, LMHC, has a Certificate in Art and Healing from Ringling College.  
She is the owner of Still Life in G Gallery in the Village of the Arts, Bradenton, FL. She works for Manatee Glens as an expressive arts therapist, both inpatient and outpatient.  She works with adults, adolescents and children, and brings an engaging presence and a host of original creative experiences to her clients.

FIONA CHANG  
 
Fiona joined us from Hong Kong, via Skype, and shared the cultural perspectives and metaphors that shape and inform her Person-Centered Expressive Arts work, as well as the formation of Expressive Arts Therapy Association of Hong Kong. Fiona also led our group in a tea ceremony - expressive arts style!


Fiona Chang, REAT, Registered Social Worker, is a Person-Centered Expressive Arts Therapist in Hong Kong, studied with Dr. Natalie Rogers at Saybrook University.   She founded the Expressive Arts Therapy Training Program of the Centre of Behavioral Health of the University of Hong Kong. She is an active leader in "Art in Hospitals", IEATA, "Art Therapy without Borders". She is now a Ph.D. student as well. 
She recently initiated expressive arts project with Orphans with HIV in Cambodia.

MARKUS ALEXANDER 
 
Markus guided us, via Skype, in a body-centered, arts based workshop exploring how inner movement contributes to outer movement in the world. DanceTheatre was the primary modality.


Markus Alexander, MA, REAT, CAGS PhDc, is the founding director of
World Arts Organization, an expressive arts training program in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He is senior faculty at The  European Graduate School in Switzerland and is adjunct faculty at the
St. Stephen's College
Art Therapy Program.
Facilitating EAFI via Skype 
His doctoral arts-based-research-project was as director/choreographer in residence at the Arts-based-Research Studio at the University of Alberta. He teaches internationally, including Canada, U.S., Europe and South America.



News: As an REAT, Markus is available via Skype for supervision hours toward becoming a Registered  Expressive Arts Therapist.
As senior faculty, he is available for thesis advising and any questions about the European Graduate School.

JANICE MARCH    


Janice shared some of the fascinating history of sandplay and facilitated a powerful experiential process with sand and miniatures.  She then took the group to her play therapy and sandplay office space to see how

Janice March, MA, LMHC-S,  is a Registered Play Therapist and Supervisor with a private practice in Sarasota. She works with children from 2 1/2 to pre-teens using representational play therapy and sandplay therapy. She also works with adults using verbal therapies, with sandplay as an option.   
  
 












STEPHANIE HEIDEMANN


 

Stephanie worked with the group to open our voices, play with "sound sculptures" and interact with one another through some original and enlivening authentic voicework experiences.

 

Stephanie Heidemann is a Licensed Massage Therapist and singer/performer who integrates the healing and arts together in her unique modality, "Authentic Voicework". Stephanie has a B.A. in Expressive Arts Therapy. She toured nationally with world music/folk a Capella quartet "VIDA". She has explored improvisational singing extensively with rhythm theorist/percussionist, Julian Douglas; and they have compiled many recordings together. Her CD "The Cantiga Project" has received national attention.  Stephanie currently resides in Sarasota, FL where she teaches her workshop series along with private students.

DERRY MACDONALD

Derry's perspective as an Artist-in-Residence at Moffitt Cancer Center's Arts in Medicine Program was a gift to the students. She shared moving stories of her work with patients and guided the group in some experiential work with Playback Theater

Derry MacDonald, a Moffitt Cancer Center Artist-in-Residence for seven years, facilitates expressive arts experiences for patients, caregivers, and staff. Derry has had a lifelong involvement with art and holds a certificate in Art and Healing from Ringling College of Art and Design. She is a member of The International Expressive Art Therapy Association and Global Alliance for Arts and Health. Derry continues to enhance her passion and skills for expressive arts by integrating art for healing in her personal art studio practice and her professional life.  

 

 

 

 

 

CYNTHIA BYDLINSKI & MARCIA CALDERON

Cynthia and Muff guided us in a lovely sand mandala process at Lido Beach. Working with natural objects and the intention of "community", they guided our group in collecting natural objects and initiating the mandala. The students then welcomed the public to join in - a great way to close out the day!


Cynthia Bydlinski is a graduate of the Art and Healing Certificate Program at Ringling College of Art and Design. She has designed and facilitated several expressive arts workshops with a variety of populations, including residents in long term care, veterans, Girl Scouts, and women with dementia.   

    

Marcia "Muff" Calderon is a graduate of the Art & Healing Certificate program at Ringling College.   Shehas facilitated with veterans, family groups, and Girl Scouts. She has experience at rehab and long term care facilities, doing workshops and art as the bedside.  

Cynthia and Muff have partnered up to create several workshops together, and they have done a series of public sand mandalas at the beach in Sarasota.

For students who are carving out their own work, determining their style, honing their philosophy, and choosing their settings, focus, and populations, an opportunity to be exposed to this variety is very beneficial.  We thank this group of skilled and community-minded colleagues for sharing your gifts.
