Hello Expressive Arts Friends!        In a workshop recently, following a brief guided meditation, a quick art process, and a a few phrases of writing, a participant exclaimed -
"That was incredible; I have a whole new perspective on my life!!"  She was amazed that the entire process had taken just 20 minutes! "After spending a few minutes in spontaneous movement, I was able to return to my work project with increased clarity and efficiency." Five minutes well spent!

These are a couple of small examples of the power and efficiency of expressive arts.
"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time".....Thomas Merton Let this 4-minute music video from Playing for Change inspire and renew you!

We are excited to present a
 TOUCH DRAWING STUDIO WORKSHOP
  Monday April 15
 Noon - 4:30 pm
  $65
Facilitated by: Expressive Arts Florida Faculty
Join us for an inspiring afternoon -

Take time to explore the possibilities of this wonderful process!

Through Touch Drawing, artists of any level, including absolute beginners, can experience inner authentic imagery coming alive on the page.

We will have the studio open and set up for both Touch Drawing

and also for mounting and developing your drawings.
You may dive deeply in to the process, or you may bring finished drawings
to mount and develop.
          | | Mounting and Developing |
Come and explore this simple yet profound process of "Touch Drawing", in which the fingers and hands take the place of pen or brush. Paper is placed over a piece of Plexiglas to which paint has been applied. Wherever the paper is touched, an imprint is made. Impulses from within take form on paper through the movement of the fingertips on the page. This intuitive, meditative process moves us deeply into ourselves, whether it is our first time or an ongoing practice.

If you have done Touch Drawing and would like to learn about how to turn a drawing into a "finished" piece, this workshop is also for you. We will have a room set up to teach the mounting and developing process. Adhere your Touch Drawing to canvas or watercolor paper and develop it with paint, collage, text, and more.  Bring a few of your favorite touch drawings with you, and let us assist you in this further exploration.        Deborah Koff-Chapin, with whom the instructors have studied, developed "Touch Drawing".   See   www.touchdrawing.com for more information. . Fee includes TD supplies and materials, including everything for basic mounting and developing EXCEPT canvas or watercolor paper.

Bring you own canvas or watercolor paper, or purchase from us. ($15 per canvas, approximately 16" x 20", $10 per full sheet wc paper.
or email us your intent to register and send a check to Expressive Arts Florida, 200 S. Washington Blvd., Suite 1, Sarasota, FL, 34236
EAFI elective credit available.

ESSENTIAL EMBODIED ARTS - BUTOH
  | |

Maureen Freehill, MFA, CYI

Monday April 22
9:30 am - 4:30 pm
The unique art of Butoh originated in Japan. It is based in authentic experience & revelation of the soul's landscape as it arises through body sensation, felt senses and the imagination. Butoh can enhance performance or therapy by developing a "body poetry" in which meaningful metaphors & images are directly accessed and embodied through movement & sometimes voice. As with much of Japanese traditional arts, these basic metaphors arise primarily from nature.

This day will be a nourishing, magical and gentle immersion in our own felt senses & aesthetic responses; especially those that arise when we contact the inspiring presence of natural world. We begin in the studio using evocative music & poetic imagery for the morning butoh lesson; then head out to enjoy the rich natural diversity of Selby Gardens for lunch & our afternoon session.  Here we will identify & dialogue with significant plants, animals & elements of nature that can become life-long allies for ongoing creative process and healing. Participants will experience awakened attention, increased capacity for sensation & active imagination. This builds a sense of embodied connection & belonging in the natural world as well as confidence & freedom for full-bodied physical & vocal expression. Participants will leave with new & powerful tools for ongoing artistic practice & session work.

Participants will need to provide own transportation to Selby Gardens & pay additional admission fee if not members.

Expressive Arts Workshop

Cynthia Bydlinski & Muff Calderon

Thursday, May 16
6-9 pm
$40

Most of us have an intense desire to feel like we are being the best person we can be, that we are fulfilling our destiny and that our lives have purpose and meaning. At the heart of this desire is understanding and embracing who we are and what strengths we possess.

Being Your Own Village is a 3-hour expressive arts workshop designed to encourage you to maintain or regain power through your life's journey by celebrating your inner strengths.

You may know the old proverb, It takes a village to raise a child. Being Your Own Village honors the assistance and guidance you receive from others, however, listening to and following your own inner voice of intuition is an acknowledgment of your natural ability to steer the course of your life's direction.

By using multiple modalities of visual art, spontaneous writing, gentle movement and sound we will lead you inward to connect with your own source of wisdom, power and peace. After a guided meditation you will create a 3-d art piece, a headdress, that reflects and honors your personal inner strengths. We will end with a celebration of sharing with gentle movement, sound and music.

Join Cynthia and Muff in a safe space as you begin to lift the layers of your inner landscape to feel, see and listen to what is beneath.   All levels of art experience are welcome, including beginners, working artists, and people who think they aren't creative. The atmosphere will be safe and accepting; no critiques or interpretations.

Art materials will be supplied. However, you may bring objects found in nature or in your home to be used in the construction of your headdress.
Register online here
Or send check to Expressive Arts Florida, 200 S. Washington Blvd. Suite 1, Sarasota, FL, 34236

Healing Communities through the Arts, April 11-12, 2013, in Washington, DC, USA.  This conference will focus on programs and initiatives that expand arts and health beyond healthcare settings and into communities, because, like individual patients, whole communities face stressful circumstances that can benefit from the arts.
