WORKSHOP
How to Write a High School Transcript
with veteran homeschooling parents
Joanna Lodin and Laurie Spigel

Joanna Lodin and I have both homeschooled our children, and helped them to successfully apply and earn acceptance at their first choice colleges. Join us for a conversation about how we prepared our teens' transcripts and navigated this process. Examples of homemade high school transcripts will be shared.  Questions are welcome!

Date and time: Sunday June 2nd, 7 - 8:30 pm,
Location: RoboFun, 2672 Broadway and 102nd St., 2nd floor
No charge.  Donations are welcome.
About the hosts:

Joanna Lodin
is mom to three boys, ages 20, 17 and 13, all lifelong homeschoolers, until it came time for college.  Over the past 18 years Joanna has also taught science to homeschooled children and mentored many families new to homeschooling.  Her mentoring work has led her to create the workshop program, Fearless Homeschooling

Laurie Block Spigel
is a leading educator in the New York City homeschooling community.  Her sons, now 22 and 28, were homeschooled.  Laurie's website, HomeschoolNYC, contains everything a parent needs to know about homeschooling in NYC, and offers an amazing list of valuable resources.  In her book, Education Uncensored, Laurie shares her innovative ideas and original techniques for every subject.

Laura Allen, mother of a 15yo homeschooler, runs a business called RoboFun involving children, creativity and technology. RoboFun is happy to host this event for homeschool families.  Robofun also offers classes on robotics, video game making and other applications for homeschooled and schooled children.

AERO Conference 2013
Limited Number of Day Passes Available!
AERO banner 2013
For the first time this conference is in the NYC area, and for the first time you can get a single day pass.  For folks who can only attend for one day, this offers a practical solution.  Now you can come to my workshop (Friday, 10:30am), attend the panel of veteran NYC homeschoolers (Friday, 3:30pm), catch other workshops in between, and stay for Peter Gray's keynote speech that evening.  For those unfamiliar with Mr. Gray's work, his column in Psychology Today called Freedom to Learn has been a heartfelt call for reason.  Other keynote speakers (on other days) include: Alfie Kohn, Nikhil Goyal, Dr. Elina Lampert-Shepel, and North Star Center for Teens.

This year the conference will have more of a focus on homeschooling than ever before. Workshops and speakers include Pat Montgomery (founder of Clonlara Home Based Education Program), Peter Bergson (founder of the pioneering homeschool center in PA, Open Connections), Wendy Raver (historian, educator and homeschooler), a panel of homeschool resource people from the NYC area, as well as my own presentation on the personalization of education.   Besides the 60+ workshops listed on-line, there are always last minute additions that makes this conference buzz with choices.

Here's what people are saying about Laurie's book:

"You made me laugh, you made me cry, and you inspired me. I can literally hear your voice, and love your storytelling and your wisdom and just the whole package. I'm stimulated and filled with ideas for my own teaching."

~ Dr. Bonnie Shulman, professor of mathematics, Bates College

"I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciated meeting you and reading your book. It is terrific, and for me, the best part was its New York perspective. I know no other book available to homeschoolers that so overtly references an urban perspective."
~ David Albert, author of And the Skylark Sings with Me and other books

"Laurie's evolution as a teacher and life-long involvement in the world of education has given her a profound understanding of the problems that plague today's schools. This book offers an insightful look at how an increasingly standardized system is robbing our children of their individuality and passion for learning. Additionally, it provides innovative how-to curriculums for anyone involved or interested in educating children."
~ Ellen Labiner, homeschooling parent and special educator
