SATURDAY, MARCH 16th: EARLY MUSIC NEW YORK

Mediterranean Meditations--Madrigals and Monody of the Early Italian and Spanish Baroque
The acoustically ideal auditorium of First Church - a "best kept secret in the heart of Lincoln Square."

Early Music Foundation is pleased to introduce its first performance in the acoustically ideal auditorium of First Church of Christ, Scientist - a 'best kept secret' in the heart of Lincoln Square. Erected in 1900 and designed by Frederick R. Comstock, it was designated a NYC Landmark in 1990. The church underwent major restoration in 2008.

As the New York Times reported, "The versatility of the musicians was impressive; some took up half a dozen different instruments in the course of the concert." Director Maestro Renz programs pivotal works of the early baroque. Madrigals, motets, instrumental canzonas and ostinato basses - mundane and moralistic - introduce freely expressive and dramatic monody, replacing the austere polyphonic style of the Renaissance.
