Dear Friends of Grand Central,
If you were not able to join LANDMARK WEST! on Saturday in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Grand Central Terminal, read on--the festivities are far from over! Justin Ferate, our guide, did a spectacular job leading us around one of the world's most spectacular pieces of architecture. The day was full of surprises: upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside (and baby, it was cold outside). A building 100 years grand has some secrets: from the yellow brick road, to the Kissing Gallery, to the secret mural...who knew Grand Central had a waiting room? It is no wonder that the AIA Guide to New York City honors Justin's tour of Grand Central Terminal as "New York's Best Walking Tour!"
Believe it or not, there was a time when Grand Central's future was uncertain. Read Monday's New York Times article, a discussion with Kent L. Barwick, titled "Looking out on Grand Central, and Looking back on Saving it." If it's books you're looking for, join the Museum of the City of New York. Tonight, Tuesday, January 29th the Museum is hosting Sam Roberts, urban affairs correspondent for The New York Times and author of a new book entitled Grand Central: How a Train Station Transformed America for a lecture and book signing. If you don't catch Roberts this evening, try on Thursday, January 31 at CUNY the Graduate Center. Still want more? Grab a copy of architectural historian Tony Robins' new book: Grand Central Terminal: 100 Years of a New York Landmark.
The official festivities and celebration of the centennial begins Friday, February 1st in the Main Concourse of the Terminal. Be there Friday morning for the re-dedication of this beloved landmark with Carolina Kennedy, Cynthia Nixon and some other celebrity appearances, live music, the Guinness Book of World Records, and 1913 pricing--even New York cheesecake for 19 cents in the Oyster Bar! Cheers to another hundred years.
