Responding to the Flint Water Crisis: What We Must Do

The city of Flint is in the midst of a catastrophic crisis. In 2014, to save money, the state-appointed emergency financial manager decided to switch Flint's water source from Lake Huron to the polluted Flint River while a new supply-line to Lake Huron was completed.

Residents in Flint complained about the smell and color of their water, but their complaints were ignored. Researchers from Virginia Tech found the water to be highly corrosive, which suggested that lead was being leached from the water pipes, but this report was discounted. A local medical center found high levels of lead in the blood of many children, but this information was treated as a political, rather than medical, concern.

As a result, the nearly 100,000 residents have been drinking and bathing in lead-contaminated water for more than a year. Many believe that the recent spike in the incidence of Legionnaire's disease in Genesee County is tied to residents drinking the polluted city water of Flint.

Even more alarming is the long-term effects of lead poisoning. In adults, it causes skin lesions, hair loss, vision loss, memory loss, depression and anxiety. In children, it causes long-term brain damage and permanent learning disabilities. In short, the people of Flint will suffer for years to come.
State Attorney General Bill Schuette has called this crisis a "human tragedy." The Governor has apologized for the responsibility he bears in his recent "State of the State" address.

It is not for us to determine where the legal and political responsibilities lie. Rather, our responsibility is to share our love and resources with the people of Flint as they struggle and suffer with the aftermath of this tragedy. We must do this if we are to be the body of Christ in our world.

In the Gospel of Matthew we read: "whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple - truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward" (10:42). Jesus said this as he sent his disciples out on mission - to assure them that they will find followers of Christ already waiting for them in the towns and villages they visit.

More importantly, these words express the kingdom-values of compassion, mercy and justice Jesus' disciples are called to proclaim. These words show us the politics of compassion that must be part of any community, any collective, any nation.

We cannot cover the total costs required to rebuild the water system in Flint, which some estimate as $1.5 billion. However, we can give what we can in the hope that our actions will bear witness to the kingdom-values of Jesus. The cup of cold water we give will be a small, but tangible, step in the work God is calling us to do here, in this place.

After contacting people at the parish, diocesan and national levels, we have discovered that there is enough bottled water in Flint for the immediate future. Instead, we have been encouraged to give financial donations to provide our partners in Flint - St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Flint, the Diocese of Eastern Michigan, and Episcopal Relief and Development - with the flexibility to respond to the present and future needs of the community.

The people of Flint need new ways to obtain safe drinking and cooking water beyond the stopgap of bottled water. They need iron-rich and calcium-rich foods - which are expensive and largely inaccessible in Flint - that prevent the absorption and removal of lead from the body. Finally, they need ongoing education regarding the long-term effects of lead poisoning, which will continue to manifest for years to come.

We are therefore turning to ask for your financial support. From now until February 21, we are starting a dedicated offering that will coincide with Presiding Bishop Curry's visit to Christ Church Cranbrook. We will match up to $10,000 on a dollar-to-dollar basis for those gifts given to this fund, which will include as well the loose-plate offering at the Sunday service where he will preach. The funding we collect will flow through Episcopal Relief and Development, an agency of the national Episcopal Church.

To make a donation and take advantage of the matching grant, checks are to be made payable to Christ Church Cranbrook with "Flint Water Crisis" written in the memo line. Alternatively, donations can be made online under the tab "Donate" at http://christchurchcranbrook.org.

In the meantime, let us hold the people of Flint in our thoughts and prayers. May they know the healing presence of God in their lives. May God give each of us grace to be that healing presence at this time, and always.

The Rev. Canon Dr. William J. Danaher, Jr.

LITURGICAL & EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Beginning This Sunday ...
Emergence: The Coming of Christianity
Sundays at 9:00 AM in the Hospitality Center
January 24 - June 5, 2016
In this course, we trace the emergence of Christianity, examining the events and figures that have shaped this early Christian history during the first 1,000 years of its existence. Our textbook will be The First Thousand Years: A Global History of Christianity (Yale University Press, 2012) by Robert Louis Wilken. Copies of the book will be available for purchase from the office and at the class.
Adult Confirmation, Reception, and Reaffirmation
Confirmation is a pastoral rite in the Episcopal Church; therefore it is not a rite that notes fuller initiation into the Church, the Body of Christ. A person is a full member of the Church through Baptism. Confirmation is a "mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism" BCP (p. 860). At Confirmation one receives strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and laying on of hands by a bishop. There are some positions of leadership in the Episcopal Church that require one to be confirmed, such as Vestry members, Eucharistic Ministers and Eucharistic Visitors. Read more
Youth Confirmation 2016
Confirmation for youth will start with a brief meeting on January 31 at 11:30 AM in the Parlor, and finish with Confirmation service on April 17. Bishop Wendell N. Gibbs will do his visitation of Christ Church Cranbrook on that day, and he will confirm young people and adults at the 10:00 AM service. Confirmation is a rite of passage for Christians - it lets individual Christians proclaim their desire, willingness and choice to follow Jesus Christ and commit to being a member of the Church of God.

Christ Church Cranbrook has renewed its partnership with St. John Providence Health System to provide a Parish Health Ministry. Our health ministry will include a group of church members who focus on the health-related needs of the people we serve, both members and the community at large. The ultimate goal of the health ministry is to empower members of the congregation to live fully abundant and healthy lives, as God intended: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Pastor Joyce Matthews.
Item of the Month: Birthday in a Bag

Christ Church Cranbrook provides a special Birthday Bag for each child at Glazer to ensure that each one is celebrated and honored on his or her special day. We are asking you to contribute one or more or all of the items listed below and place them in the bins located in the church entrances.

Items needed: 1 box cake mix, 6-8 oz. bottle of vegetable oil, 24 individual disposable aluminum foil baking cups, 1 can of frosting, bag of 25 balloons, cake candles, stickers, party plates and napkins. Thank you for contributing to this important Outreach Ministry at Christ Church Cranbrook.
Christmas Brunch Thank You!
December 25 was a perfect example of you living as the three wise men: you traveled, you visited and brought gifts to our guests.Thank you to all who gave of their time, talent and gifts to make this another great Christmas day for many who otherwise may have had to spend Christmas alone. - Shirley Green
PARISH WIDE EVENTS
ON THE SCREEN AT CCC TONIGHT
Thursday Night at the Movies
"Woman in Gold" (2015)
January 21, Hospitality Center, 6:30 PM

Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), an octogenarian Jewish refugee, takes on the Austrian government to recover an iconic painting of her aunt by Gustav Klimt. The painting was stolen by the Nazis just prior to Word War II, and housed in an Austrian museum. The legal battle involves the U.S. Supreme Court and the Austrian art restitution board. Ryan Reynolds plays Altmann's lawyer. CCC's Mike Frank will provide interesting historical research and lead the post-movie discussion.
One Bread Ministry
How would you like to be an ambassador... for Christ, and for Christ Church Cranbrook? We invite you to do this with a simple commitment.

HERE'S HOW:
You make contact by phone with a first-time visitor (name, address and phone number supplied) to ask if you might deliver a gift of welcome from the church. With their permission, you deliver a pre-packaged artisan loaf of bread (stocked in the church kitchen) to the visitor's home, at a time that is convenient for both of you.In addition, you would invite them to return to Christ Church Cranbrook and to contact you if they want more information. You do not have to know the answer to every question asked - just direct them to someone who can, like a member of clergy or staff. Please contact J. J. Benkert to become an ambassador for this warm and welcoming new ministry.
Fact and Fiction Fun
The selection for the January FFF meeting is Huck Finn's America: Mark Twain and the Era That Shaped His Masterpiece, by Andrew Levy.
The book is a provocative, exuberant, and deeply researched investigation into Mark Twain's writing of Huckleberry Finn, which turns on its head everything we thought we knew about America's favorite icon of childhood. Everyone is welcome to join in the discussion on
Monday, January 25 in the Conference Room of Christ Church Cranbrook from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.

Interfaith Question of the Week
As a way of learning about our neighbors of different faith traditions, we share this link to the Question of the Week on the InterFaith Leadership Council (IFLC) of Metro Detroit's website. Please feel free to submit your own questions to IFLC for consideration to be featured.

This week's question is: What is the new year for trees?

The InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit is a faith-based civic organization made up of visionary religious and lay leaders of many faiths whose shared values compel them to work toward a community that lives together in harmony. Their goals are to:

BRING TOGETHER, encourage and nurture interfaith groups and networks

SUPPORT CONCILIATION between and among religious groups as well as the community at large through active conflict resolution

PROMOTE INTERFAITH EDUCATION so that the metropolitan Detroit community can benefit from the synergies and creative benefits that knowledge and understanding can provide.
