Who doesn't love those two words? These simple words can open a closed heart, bring joy to a saddened heart and turn any heart warm with a powerful feeling deep down in your belly. Giving invitations is really how God treats us - His invitation to His table is always open to everyone and as Father Bill tells me, He creates a feast like none other!  High standards for a chef, right?

In the South it is customary for us to bring a newcomer, the infirmed or the bereaved, a casserole or a pound cake to convey our intention of hospitality. As much as I have learned to love a casserole, opening myself up to others in a way of being to convey hospitality can be more useful. It also takes the stress out of cooking!

Being hospitable means showing up for others - you don't have to be a great cook or be insightfully witty.  It is about opening yourself up to others in a way that the "other" feels welcome, appreciated and special.  Sometimes a simple acknowledgement of saying Hello with a smile is enough to make someone feel great.

Being involved with the Hospitality Committee has helped me meet so many wonderful people and develop a true sense of belonging with CCC. There are so many opportunities to participate in - receptions, dinners, coffee hours and special events.  All of these events are an effort to support our fellow parishioners, clergy, choir and guests.  The only skill necessary is a smile.

You're Invited to join me on Thursday, November 12 from 6:00-7:00 PM for a reception, fellowship and discussion on how you can participate on the Hospitality Committee.  Thank you to all who have helped make this committee a vital part of our parish life and we welcome new volunteers to join us at our "table."

The Rector's Forum
Living Religion(s)
Sundays at 9:00 AM in the Hospitality Center

We live, as the saying goes, in interesting times. Religion, once considered a spent force in society, continues to figure in world events as a source of conflict and compassion, of violence and peace, of wounding and healing. Join us for an informative and interesting look at some of the world's religions as we look for the overlaps that exist between them as well as their different claims about God and humanity.

The Rector's forums are recorded and can be viewed by clicking HERE
Choral Evensong and God in the City
Please join us the first Sunday of the month for Choral Evensong at 6:00 PM.  There will be an organ recital preceding each Choral Evensong at 5:30 PM.

On Sunday, December 6th, we will be observing a service of Advent Lessons and Carols. The recital at 5:30 PM will feature a Baroque string ensemble.

This year, at our 6:00 PM Choral Evensong services, we will provide an opportunity for activists, academics, clergy, community leaders, and artists to share how they find God in the midst of their work in the Greater Detroit Area and beyond. After offering a sermon at our monthly Choral Evensong, they will offer additional remarks and take questions about the work they do during a special reception.

Our next Choral Evensong and God in the City preacher will be Mary McLaren Honsel, the Executive Director of Crossroads of Michigan on December 6th.
Upcoming Music at Christ Church Cranbrook Events
Friday, November 6th, at 8:00 PM -  Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra concert featuring the Christ Church Choir and guest conductor Christopher Wells. The BBSO will perform Zoltán Kodály's Summer Evening and Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major. The Christ Church Choir will perform Morten Lauridsen's Lux aeterna with the BBSO. A pre-concert talk with Maestro John Thomas Dodson will be before the concert at 7:00 PM. Ticket information can be found at www.bbso.org.
The Parish Choir
Sunday, November 15 at the 10 AM Service

The Parish Choir is an ensemble for teens and adults that sings alongside the Christ Church Choir several times each year. For these occasions, music selections are intentionally uncomplicated - chosen for singers who are not able to make a weekly commitment to the Christ Church Choir, but would like to be a part of the music program. Singers can join this ensemble whenever they are available.

The rehearsal will be held on Thursday, November 12, from 7:30 until 9:30 PM. On Sunday, November 15, rehearsal will begin at 8:45 AM for the 10:00 AM service. All are welcome to join us!
What? and When? are the Youth Mission Trips?
Find out the details on Sunday, November 15 at 11:30 AM in the Parlor. Pastor Manisha and Jill Bednas will be leading High School Hang Out and talking about the different "Disciple Trips" we have planned for this coming Summer. This is your chance to learn more, ask questions, and/or reserve your spot!

Every CCC Middle and High School youth has an opportunity to go on a mission trip! A mission trip provides an important avenue of spiritual formation for all young people. On mission trips, youth grow in faith through the disciplines of manual labor and simple living in community.  While working for others, youth experience the generosity of those whom they are helping. These week-long trips provide a way to experience God that has lasting impact on a young person's life.
CCC is offering four mission trips for youth:

*    June 27-July 4, 2016: Dominican Republic
*    July 4- 11, 2016: Dominican Republic
*    July 17- 23, 2016: Chicago
*    August 7-12, 2016: Mission: Possible! In Detroit

Current 6th and 7th graders are eligible for the Detroit trip. Current 8th graders through college students may go on any trip.  Trips range in cost from approximately $150 to $2,000, including transportation. Each student can receive help in raising funds. This year, we are delighted to be partnering with the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan and local churches to make these trips possible.

If you are interested in the Dominican Republic trips, speak to Pastor Manisha or visit http://www.edomi.org/yaya/camp-compassion/ to secure a spot and place a deposit.  The trips will fill up fast.

Questions: contact Pastor Manisha (mdostert@christchurchcranbrook.org) or Jill Bednas (jbednas@christchurchcranbrook.org)

It is never to late to join the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Experienced knitters and those who wish to learn are welcome. Our next meeting is Monday, November 9, from 12:00-2:00 PM. in Rooms 201-202.
What a wonderful God we have-he is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every mercy, and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials. And why does he do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them this same help and comfort God has given us. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Happening is a retreat weekend "for youth" "by youth" that allows young people (grades 9-12) to explore their relationships with Jesus, each other and the world.

Happening begins on a Friday at 6 p.m. and goes until 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants are expected to be at Happening the entire time. The Dioceses of Michigan and Eastern Michigan share in this ministry for young people. Christ Church, Grosse Pointe hosts the event. Click HERE for more information, a downloadable flyer and to register.
Item of the Month
Collecting SOCKS in October! All types of socks are welcome including those for adults and children.  These items will be donated to Crossroads of Michigan.  Mary Honsell, Executive Director, stated that socks are critical to them as a prevention of frostbite and that athletic socks for men are most useful.  After preparing lunch for our friends at Crossroads J J Benkert took the opportunity to talk with our guests when one young man in a wheelchair asked, "Did you bring any clothing?"  When JJ asked what was needed he answered, "THERMAL UNDER WEAR AND THERMAL SOCKS."  Prayerfully consider donating these warm items to Crossroads of Michigan.  Thank you for your generosity in supporting this cause.

Thursday Night Movie
"Atonement" 2007
November 19, 6:30 PM, Hospitality Center

Based on the best-selling British romance novel by Ian McEwan, this drama/mystery portrays a 13 year old who accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. Stars include James McAvoy, Keira Knightley and Vanessa Redgrave. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and was nominated for six others, including Best Picture. Mike Frank will lead the discussion of this interesting, thought provoking and fabulous movie.
Fact and Fiction Fun
Fact and Fiction Fun will meet again on Monday, November 30, 2015 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 PM in the Conference Room at Christ Church Cranbrook.  The selection for this  month is Chaucer's Tale: 1386 and the Road to Canterbury by Paul Strohm. In addition to reading the book, we will also read one of the Canterbury Tales: The Wife of Bath, which can be Googled and obtained online. Please come and join in the discussion.

At the beginning of 1386, Geoffrey Chaucer-lauded today as the father of English literature-was a middle-aged Londoner with a modest bureaucratic post; his literary successes had been confined to a small audience of intimate friends. But by year's end, he was swept up in a series of disastrous events that would ultimately leave him jobless, homeless, separated from his wife, and exiled in the countryside of Kent. Unbroken by these worldly reversals, Chaucer pursued a new life in art.  In this highly readable social history, Paul Strohm, one of the finest medievalists of our time, vividly recreates the bustle of everyday life in fourteenth-century London while he unveils the fascinating story behind Chaucer's journey from personal crisis to rebirth as the immortal poet of The Canterbury Tales. In addition to reading the book, we will also read one of the Canterbury Tales: The Wife of Bath, which can be Googled and obtained online.
