| Rector's Forum: Living Religion(s) | | We live, as the saying goes, in interesting times. Religion, once considered a spent force in society, continues to figure in world events as a source of conflict and compassion, of violence and peace, of wounding and healing.
Therefore, it is imperative for people of faith to know whereof they speak when asked to give an account of what they believe in relation to the other beliefs and believers around them. There was a time when people needed to travel a great distance to encounter another faith tradition. Now, religious differences begin the moment we leave our front door.
In this course, we will provide an overview of the world's major religions. The perspective we take will be to look for the overlaps that exist between the major religions of the world as well as their different claims about God and humanity.
The textbook for this course will be: Introduction to World Religions, 2nd Ed., edited by Christopher Partridge and Tim Dowley (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2013). Copies are available online or at the parish office. This course will be taught by Father Bill, Pastor Manisha, Troy Dostert, and Pastor Joyce.

A Letter from the Presiding Bishop
| | Dear friends,
We would like to share with you a letter we received from the Presiding Bishop, The Most Reverend Katherine Jefferts Schori. Dear Good People of Christ Church Cranbrook,
Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Word has been received by my office of your faithfulness and generosity in the financial support you have provided through the Good Friday Offering. On behalf of the bishops, clergy and people of the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East and all who will benefit from your support, I offer you my deep appreciation. We sometimes wonder what we can do in times which seem so tragic and confusing. The Good Friday Offering provides us a focus for our prayers and action in support of our sisters and brothers throughout the Middle East. Our support for the schools, hospitals, medical clinics and parishes sponsored by the dioceses of the Province promote mutual respect and understanding among the people of the region which are the foundation stones of the future. Thank you for your participation in this vital ministry. Your servant in Christ, Katherine Jefferts Schori |
Engaging the Community in Good Works: A Short Story About Mission and Peanut Butter | | Sometimes, Christians are called to do good works for the sake of others. Sometimes, Christians fulfill God's mission by igniting others to do good works. Here is one such story. Don, who retired from being the Kroger Regional Manager recently, decided he was going to use his "free time" in retirement to do good things for others. Among other acts of service, he drives the church van on Sundays, picking up members who are unable to drive themselves to worship. This month, while reading his Take It Home, he saw the announcement about the Item of the Month: peanut butter for the Open Door Food Pantry at St. John Episcopal Church in Royal Oak. He hatched a plan. In his "free time," he went all over Oakland County to Kroger stores, asking them to donate peanut butter. Cases of it. Then, he asked his dentist, his doctor and stockbroker. "C'mon. You got $20 you can spare." They did. On August 29, Don delivered 182 jars of peanut butter that our local community donated to our church's calling to feed the hungry. "They'll see me again next month, when we collect paper goods as the Item of the Month. They'll get used to it."

| Renew | | |
Wednesdays at 6:00- 6:30 PM
This Fall we are introducing a new mid-week service to provide the opportunity for each and all to draw near to God, to rest in God's presence, and to be renewed spiritually through worship, prayer, Bible study, and fellowship. Renew is loosely modeled on the service of evensong, with simple worship music, prayers and brief study of a Scripture passage. Fellowship and a light supper follows the service.

| One Bread Ministry | | How would you like to be an ambassador... for Christ, and for Christ Church Cranbrook? We invite you to do this with a simple commitment. HERE'S HOW:
You make contact by phone with a first-time visitor to ask if you might deliver a gift of welcome from the church. The visitor's name, address and phone number will be supplied to you. Once successful, you would then deliver a pre-packaged artisan loaf of bread to the visitor's home, at a time that is convenient. There will be a supply of loaves stored in the church kitchen.
This kind gesture would be accompanied by your invitation for them to return to Christ Church Cranbrook and to contact you for any information they would like to have. You do not have to know the answer to every question asked - just point them in the right direction to someone who can, like a member of clergy or staff.
"Yes, sign me up"... Please contact J. J. Benkert at bbjjb3@gmail.com or 248.642.7790 to become an ambassador for this warm and welcoming new ministry.

| Fact and Fiction Fun | | |
Fact and Fiction Fun will not meet in July and August. A new season will begin again on Monday, September 28, 2015 from 7:30 to 9:00 PM in the Conference Room. The selection for September is The Leopard by Giuseppe Di Lampedusa. Please join us.
In Sicily in 1860, as Italian unification grows inevitable, the smallest of gestures seems dense with meaning and melancholy, sensual agitation and disquiet: "Some huge irrational disaster is in the making." All around him, the prince, Don Fabrizio, witnesses the ruin of the class and inheritance that already disgust him. His favorite nephew, Tancredi, proffers the paradox, "If we want things to stay as they are, they will have to change," but Don Fabrizio would rather take refuge in skepticism or astronomy, "the sublime routine of the skies."
Giuseppe di Lampedusa, also an astronomer and a Sicilian prince, was 58 when he started to write The Leopard. E. M. Forster called his work "one of the great lonely books." What renders it so beautiful and so discomfiting is its creator's grasp of human frailty and, equally, of Sicily's arid terrain. The author died at the age of 60, soon after finishing The Leopard, though he did live long enough to see it rejected as unpublishable. |
