| CCC Confirmation - Spring 2015 | | This spring, youth confirmation preparation class was designed for youth age 15 years and older and had a dozen youth enroll and complete the program.
We began with a review of the Book of Common Prayer. The weeks that followed explored central topics of Christianity such as differing view of God, going to church, living out your life like Jesus in His way, and love. Each week we watched one short video from the Animate Faith series from Augsberg Fortress. The series features leading voices in the Christian community to create an interesting exploration of big questions of the Christian faith that's designed to spark conversation. I taught the program most weeks although I must give a very special thanks to Dr. Edie Wakevainen and Dr. Mary Morreale (Acolyte leaders) who each taught a class.
Our CCC youth attend many different high schools, both public and parochial, so building a community of faith was an important piece of the program. Everyone was very quiet in the beginning but they got to know one another a little better through icebreakers and group activities.
The service component to the program was preparing dinner for our guests from the South Oakland Shelter. We gathered on a Friday afternoon, paired up and cooked sloppy joes, baked cornbread and served it up with a side of coleslaw and chips. This turned out to be great fun, as it was an all-youth event (middle school and high school age youth) and included those who signed up for the DR Mission trip.
By our last class, we needed to get out of the classroom and out of our seats. We went out into the church and outside on the grounds armed with smart phones for a scavenger hunt. Teams had to look up information and go to specific places in the church, take photos or "selfies" and text them back to home base. The scavenger hunt photos were really funny, and provided proof that the mission was completed.
Congratulations to each one of these intelligent and thoughtful teens for the commitment they have made. It was a pleasure getting to know them better and I look forward to helping them stay connected to the church.
Confirmation Service will be an Episcopal service led by The Rt. Reverend Bishop Wendell Gibbs on May 9 at 11:00 AM. Due to the large number of participants, service will be held in a very large Catholic church in Brighton, Michigan. All are welcome to attend.
- Jill Bednas |

| Congratulations to Joyce Matthews | | Congratulations to the Reverend Joyce Matthews for being named a "Diversity Champion." Joyce was nominated by the Bill Danaher to be recognized by the Race Relations and Diversity Task Force, a sponsored group of The Community House. A breakfast was held Thursday, May 7 to "give special recognition to one individual whose vision of diversity has created a significant impact on others. The honored individuals make an invaluable contribution by helping to ensure that all people feel included and empowered in the shared endeavors of your organization and in our larger community." |
| Rector's Forum: Practicing the Presence of God | | Sundays at 9:00 AM - Hospitality Center April 26 - May 24, 2015
When we proclaim Jesus Christ as risen from the dead, we say more than that he has defeated the powers of sin, death, and the grave. We say more than that our own lives will end, like his, in resurrection. Christ's resurrection comes with the promise that he is always with us. "Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age," so the resurrected Christ tells his disciples in the Gospel of Matthew (28:20).
What does it mean to be in God's presence? What does it mean for Christ to be present in our own lives? As we move from Easter through Pentecost, this edition of the Rector's Forum will look at different ways Christians have practiced the presence of God throughout history and still today. |
| Item of the Month | | COLLECTING BOOKS IN MAY! This month Christ Church Cranbrook will conduct a Book Drive which will create a Summer Reading Program for the students at Glazer Elementary. All youth books (new and used) are welcome. There is a need for Series Books - especially in a genre for boys. No encyclopedias please. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause.

| Sunday at Six - Evensong | | Join us on Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM, as we will be offering weekly Sunday at Six Evensong.
This brief service will be held in the choir stalls and will be congregationally sung. The music will include simple chants and well known hymns. Like our parish discipline of daily Morning Prayer, the Sunday at Six Evensong is an excellent way to ground the day and the week in prayer and scripture. Come and bring a friend! |
| United Thank Offering | | The United Thank Offering Weekend will be May 9 - 10. UTO has been a grant ministry of the Episcopal Church Women for many years, helping churches to promote programs that enhance and benefit the community. In our area alone, recent grants have been awarded to help renovate kitchens that feed the homeless and to revitalize playrooms and bathrooms for programs that care for children while parents work or attend GED classes. All of the UTO monies collected go to the grants; none of the money is used for administrative costs. We can be part of this unique and worthwhile ministry. Blue UTO envelopes are in the pews. Please make checks out to Christ Church Cranbrook with "UTO" in the memo line.

This week's question is: What is Taoism?
The InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit is a faith-based civic organization made up of visionary religious and lay leaders of many faiths whose shared values compel them to work toward a community that lives together in harmony.
Our Goals:
BRING TOGETHER, encourage and nurture interfaith groups and networks
SUPPORT CONCILIATION between and among religious groups as well as the community at large through active conflict resolution
PROMOTE INTERFAITH EDUCATION so that the metropolitan Detroit community can benefit from the synergies and creative benefits that knowledge and understanding can provide. |
