Lakeside Inn News

September 2013

Greetings!

Students are back in school, football season is in full swing and the early mornings are  getting darker and darker... it's beginning to look as if another summer is winding down.  I won't say that I'm disappointed, as summers can be a bit tough around here.  While I personally love hot weather, I find myself dreading late afternoons with no rain or at least some decent cloud cover.  These old buildings are TOUGH to keep cool when the temperature is 95 and the heat index is 105.  Summer is also the dreaded "off season", so business levels are generally lower than the fall and winter months when there are simply more visitors here in Florida.  However, I will say that this summer has actually been quite busy - whew!  I am happy to report that my weekly bill paying sessions with our controller have been far less stressful than they were a year ago at this time.  I really do want to thank everyone that came and visited with us these past few months.  Your support has been greatly appreciated, as it has enabled me to continue our restoration work, uninterrupted, and to keep our fifty-plus employees steadily working throughout this period.  I consider those two items to be big accomplishments.  Yes, we have a few more weeks before we can truly say that fall has arrived, but right now I'm feeling pretty good.

I don't know if I can begin to tell you how many things are planned for this fall both here at the Inn and in Mount Dora.  I'm not kidding when I say starting at the end of this month there will be something big going on around here every single week through December.  It doesn't matter whether your preference is bird watching, bicycle riding, concerts, antiquing, gardening or just enjoying the excitement that accompanies festivals... there will be something for you to experience and enjoy both here at the Inn and within Mount Dora.  I hope you will have the chance to join us for a short (or long) getaway and experience it for yourself.  I have listed all of the events and dates in the body of this newsletter and have included some information on special rate offers as well.

I hope to see you soon.

Cheers,

Jim

There have been a lot of positive moves in The Gatehouse this past month.  Stacy has incorporated works from a number of new artisans that are really a "wow".  There are also a number of new Lakeside Inn keepsakes and gift items available for sale.

The monthly, 2nd Friday Gallery Walks continued through the summer and plans are underway to ensure they are even larger and more successful throughout this fall and winter.  The next gallery walk is scheduled for Friday, September 13th, from 6-8 PM.  Stacy will be hosting a Sangria and cheese, meet-the-artist reception that evening for featured artist Emily Lewis, a painter that specializes in creating beautiful oil paintings of the rich Florida landscape.

Buddy, the shop dog, continues to report to work everyday, delighting everyone he greets.  The summer heat slowed him down a bit, particularly in the afternoons.  However, after a brief 3-4 hour nap, he was always ready to go.

Just in case you think 130 years wasn't such a long time ago, consider this:  In 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge was first opened for traffic; Buffalo Bill Cody debuted his first Wild West Show in Omaha and in December of that year, Johannes Brahms premiered his 3rd Symphony.

Restoration Update

Work continues in the rooms and other indoor spaces.  As is usually the case, we experienced a few setbacks, which, for the most part were overcome without too much difficulty.  But I'm a very goal and timeline minded person, so any setback drives me crazy.  The roofs have certainly been well tested this summer.  Overall I would say things held up pretty well.  There are certainly a few spots that need further attention, but not as many as you would think.  The biggest difficulties we've encountered in the guest rooms have been in many of the bay windowed rooms and the end rooms of the Gables and Terrace Buildings.  Though I admire most of what the architect and partner, Fred Wesley Wentworth did for the Inn back in 1920's... I curse him for designing flat roofs in those areas of the Gables and Terrace Buildings to have flat roofs.  I have no idea how many times those areas have been re-roofed and repaired over the many decades... but clearly there were periods of time when the roofs and soffits were in very bad shape and as a result, those sections of the buildings suffered a lot of water penetration (see article re: Belleview Biltmore).  In those areas, ripping out and repairing falls under the heading of "setback".  However, on a positive note, the next time we want, or need to paint those internal walls we first won't have to rebuild those walls.  That will indeed be a very happy day... and that day is getting closer and closer.

Lakeside Chamber Players

Once again, this group of talented professional musicians from the Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra packed the house for the August concert, performing the works of many great American composers.  It was indeed a very enjoyable afternoon.

The next performance by the Lakeside Chamber Players is slated for Sunday, September 22nd at 2:30 PM.  This concert will celebrate the music of Mozart, Beethoven... and more, in a casual, cabaret-like atmosphere.  A $10 per person fee will be collected at the door to help offset the travel expenses of these dedicated musicians, who travel to Mount Dora from around the State to bring to us exceptional live classical music.  It should be a memorable afternoon.

The goals of this group are to raise awareness and grow support within the local area for classical music.  The further goal is for a "needs blind" classical music camp for talented area students to be held here on the grounds of the Inn beginning in the summer of 2014.  Lakeside Chamber Players are also supportive of our goal to help raise awareness of and donations for Lake Cares Food Pantry.  If you would like more information on how you may be able to help support their efforts to create a classical music camp, or to donate, please contact:

Summer Lawn Concerts & Street Paloozas...

Our next Summer Lawn Concert and Street Palooza will take place on September 21st, featuring musical group, The Forefathers.  The music created by The Forefathers is best described as "an instrumental ensemble performing original Ambient World Rock, that is a fusion of Celtic, New Age, Afro-beat, Folk and Rock... to evoke a spirit of positive energy, mystery and adventure that stimulates the listener's imagination to new frontiers".  I've heard them before and they are indeed very talented and very captivating.  It should a fun evening, complete with a beautiful Lake Dora sunset and a comfortable late summer breeze.

The Forefathers will take the stage at 7:30 PM, but plan to arrive early and enjoy the Street Palooza. The Inn's Street Paloozas are a gathering of artists, artisans, face painters, balloon tiers, street performers, grilled food items, drinks, ice cream and even a bubble machine. A palooza is defined as an all-out party, and this family-friendly street party will start at 5:30 PM.

The last remaining concert for this year, will feature two of Florida's most talented emerging groups.

Fall Florida Get-a-way

Mount Dora is a great place to visit in the fall.  Our many festivals, the change in temperature and the many hills and large beautiful oaks help to create a feel and and provide a fall experience that is unlike any other in the State of Florida.

The drop in temperature leads to many memorable outdoor experiences, both daytime and after the sun sets. Days involve relaxed strolls, time spent with a good book in a rocking chair along the Verandah, or in one of the Adirondacks along the lakeshore... where spontaneous naps are known to occur.  Evenings are filled with outdoor dining, music, gallery strolls, carriage rides and more.

I hope you can plan a trip to visit us this fall.  I'm quite certain you'll be glad that you did.  Throughout this fall we have plenty of value rates and packages available and if you are able to visit during the week, the value is even greater.  Check for yourself at Lakeside Inn.

All Aboard...

Since arriving in Mount Dora, a question that I have been asked repeatedly is "when is the train coming back"?  Admittedly, it looked for a while that the answer appeared to be "probably Orange Blossom Cannonball logo never".  However, that appears to be about to change, as work is beginning on a list of track repairs needed between Mount Dora and Tavares.  If all goes well, the train should be returning to Mount Dora in early 2014.  The expectation is for several trips per day, allowing riders to disembark at stopping points and re-board on a later train.

The train itself is the Orange Blossom Cannon Ball... and if you've never seen it in person, you've probably seen it in at least one movie.  The list is quite impressive, including the new True Grit, Appaloosa, 3:10 to Yuma, Rosewood and O' Brother, Where Art Thou?

I'll keep you posted as a more definite date for the start-up is determined.

 Lakeside Inn History

The wooded area to the south of the Inn (past the flag pole) was once indeed part of the Inn's grounds.  There was even an eight-slip boathouse at the far end.  During one of "bad eras" the ownership of the time, when selling the Inn, split off that four acre piece and sold that separately.  Since then there have been several unsuccessful attempts to reunite the two pieces of property.  Time will tell if it will actually ever happen.

The End of an Era...

The Belleview Biltmore, located in Belleair Florida (near Clearwater), opened in 1897 and is the last remaining Henry Plant hotel.  Henry B. Plant was the other Florida railroad magnet and hotel builder of that era.  The Biltmore enjoyed a great deal of notoriety over the decades, particularly more recently, as one of the largest wooden structures in the United States.  However, the hotel had languished for the last few years it was still open and was ordered closed in 2010 due to its deteriorating condition, due primarily to water penetration.

It was sold in 2011... shortly after we purchased Lakeside Inn... so I was naturally quite interested in what was going to happen with the Biltmore.  For a while there was talk of perhaps saving a portion of the hotel and redeveloping other parts of the property.  Apparently even that is not going to happen, and instead, the entire property is to be leveled.  That will be a very sad day for those of us that love historic hotels.

Belleview Biltmore
Belleview Biltmore
** A "tidbit" of Florida hotel history.  One of Henry Flagler's hotels... the original Ponce de Leon (Henry Flagler - the other Florida railroad magnet and hotel builder), is now the centerpiece of Flagler College in St. Augustine.  One of Henry Plant's other hotels... the Tampa Bay Hotel, is now the centerpiece of the University of Tampa.

I hope to see you soon.
