Greetings!
Darn it... I was beginning to think that I would indeed make it through this winter season without getting sick. Since October, I think every one of our managers and staff members has contracted something. The fall brought the flu to Mount Dora, the winter brought bronchitis. I'm not quite sure what I have, but boy oh boy am I tired... and wow, what a headache. Oh well, I guess it's my turn.
Sick or not, I really need to share how excited I am by the success of these past couple of months. Aside from Mother Nature not being able to make up her mind about whether March should be beautiful or miserable, everything else was terrific. Business was good, we made steady progress on the renovation front, and we even managed to get our property taxes paid on time... so all-in-all, it has been another very good winter season. April and May certainly look to be busy, with a lot of great activities and events both in Mount Dora and here at the Inn. All of which are meant to bring a spirit of fun and frivolity - after all, it's spring. As William Shakespeare said... "April hath put a spirit of youth in everything".
Please forgive me if it starts to read a little "loopy"... the OTC medication is hard at work.
Cheers (cough, cough, sniffle, sniffle)!
Jim

A lot of happenings at The Gatehouse this month. Stacy has book signings on the 14th of April with Frank J. Keller, author of Cracker Crumbs and Doris Blodsworth and Connie Fleetwood, authors of Legendary Locals of Lake County. Then on the 20th of April, Richard Polton will be signing copies of his new book on noted architect, Fred Wesley Wentworth. By coincidence, Fred Wentworth was a one time co-owner of Lakeside Inn. He was the designer of the Gables and Terrace Buildings as well as the first swimming pool. He also made significant changes and enhancements to the main Lakeside Building... and was responsible for the installation of a fire sprinkler system throughout all of the buildings. This sprinkler system helped save the Lakeside Building one unfortunate evening in 1931.
On Saturday, April 6th Les Williams will be teaching a Hypertufa Class from 10 AM - noon, followed by lunch. Hypertufa, commonly associated with English garden troughs, is a lightweight cement based material used in making planters and other decorative items. In this class, each participant will make a planter of their own. Les will demonstrate carving and coloring techniques. The cost for the 2 hour class includes everything needed except for rubber gloves. Long, tight fitting latex kitchen gloves are recommended. Old clothes are recommended. Preregistration is required and each class is limited to 6-12 people.
The featured artists this month are Flo and Patti, who met in the late 70's while raising their kids and living in the same neighborhood in Illinois. A love for art, crafts and fun, maintained the friendship through several moves, careers and four decades. In l993 they decided to rejuvenate by going to clown camp in La Crosse, Wisconsin. They have entertained in parades and parties as Buttercup and Tappi! Now retired, Flo lives in Mount Dora and Pattie in Sarasota. Join Stacy, Flo and Patti on Friday, April 12h for a meet-the-artists reception from 6-8 PM, in conjunction with the Second Friday Gallery Walk.
As for Buddy... all is well. Between chasing squirrels and submitting to petting all day long... he has a pretty busy schedule.

New Logos are Debuted...
To help commemorate 130th Anniversary of the Inn, we have redesigned the main logo and developed new logos for both The Beauclaire Dining Room and Tremain's Tavern.
In redesigning the main logo, our objective was to bring back the crested style of an old logo we discovered that had been developed for the Inn decades ago. We did however take the liberty to modify it somewhat with a slightly more up-to-date look and feel. We also felt that the rocking chair truly represented character of the property. We hope you like it.
In developing the logos for The Beauclaire Dining Room and Tremain's Tavern, we tried to stay simple and respectful of the character of these two venues.

Renovation Update
It's funny how the pattern of our week sort of flows like a wave. Monday through Friday, we are fully engaged in carpentry, mechanical repairs, landscaping, painting... you name it, we're doing it. Friday afternoon comes along, work stops and as guests and visitors arrive, I swap hats and focus. In addition to doing the normal "hotelier stuff", weekends for me are all about research, material ordering and various marketing activities. As a small independent hotel, someone has to do the "research"... which normally falls to me. Over the past two years I've learned more about systems and equipment, product specifications, and how to qualify for free shipping, than I ever believed I would... or could. The weekend passes and come Monday morning at 7:00 AM, renovation work begins once again. Currently, work is underway in our guest rooms and corridors. I wish the progress were faster, but removing decades of old wall paper and paint, along with rebuilding walls and floors, is slow work. It may be slow, but it is indeed steady. Occasionally we encounter a room that may end up taking 3-4 weeks to complete, but the normal or average is about 1-2 weeks per room. Outside, our landscaping work also continues, with each phase or project now more carefully planned and considered, to ensure years of beautiful enjoyment.
I do want to thank everyone that has provided us with words of appreciation and encouragement. I haven't had anyone tell me to tear it all down and start over, in quite a while. Don't get me wrong, we still have a lot of work to do. But we are gaining on it, and with everyone's help, support and patience, we'll get it done. If you haven't been here for a while, please come see for yourself.

The Shops...
Certainly one of the great things about Mount Dora is the downtown area and the many small shops, boutiques and antique stores. I will be the first to admit that I am a terrible shopper... especially for a gift item. I think it's because instead of looking at something and asking "will they like it", I tend to be far more practical and ask the question "do they need it"? As a result, shopping becomes a real struggle. Recently I once again had the opportunity to face that challenge. The good news is that it gave me the chance to visit EVERY shop in the downtown area. No, I'm not kidding... every single shop. I won't disclose what I purchased. I did however manage to convince myself that the person for whom I was shopping, did in fact need the item... so, it was a win/win. What I will share is, that across the board, I was warmly greeted and welcomed in every single shop and was quite awed by the selection and diversity of items available throughout our downtown. Plus, I got to sample some great fudge in one shop and a great cup of coffee in another. Shopping in Mount Dora is indeed a pleasure.

Street Palooza... wheeeee!!
What is a Street Palooza? Well, a simple definition is that it is party... or, in our case, a sort of street fair. For our Palooza, there will be musicians and magic, balloon tying and face painting, artists, baby goats, and even an agility course for dogs. There will be food and drinks, Segways and even a hot air balloonist. Seriously though, there is no real point to the whole thing other than to have some clean, simple fun on a Sunday afternoon. Plan a visit to the Mount Dora Village Market in Evans Park prior, and come here after. Visit Mount Dora will be hosting the monthly PAWS event that same day, so bring the pooch and plan to stop by for the owner/pet non-costumed lookalike contest here at the Palooza. All this fun stuff will be happening on Sunday, April 14th from 1-5 PM here at Inn. We hope to see you then.

Mark your calendar for a trip to Mount Dora this May 17th-19th for the 5th Annual Mount Dora Blues and Wine Festival. The fun kicks off on Friday evening at 7:00 PM with the soulful vocals and unique guitar style of Charlie Morris. All performances will be held at Evans Park, which is adjacent to the Inn... with two exceptions. Those exceptions being, on Saturday, at 4:00 PM when Mount Dora native and a season 12, top 25 finalist on America Idol, David Oliver Willis takes the stage on the Great Lawn here at the Inn. David will immediately be followed by Franc Robert and the Boxcar Tourists. We will also be hosting a Palooza on that Saturday from 2-6 PM. In addition to the fabulous Blues music, there will be a wine tasting event both here at the Inn and at Maggie's Attic on Saturday from 1-4 PM. A full weekend package including accommodations for two nights, breakfast each morning and tickets to all shows and the wine tasting is available starting at just $355 for two people, please visit Lakeside Inn to check availability. For complete performance information, visit Mount Dora Blues and Wine Festival. We know it will be fun... we hope to see you here.

Renninger's Twin Markets
If you haven't been, you need to plan a trip - SOON. I could try to describe Renninger's to you, but I would not due it justice. What I will say is... imagine a 100+ acre facility where on the same day, in the same location, you can shop for fine antiques, or live chickens. On any given weekend there could be hundreds of antique dealers and thousands of shoppers in for an antiques event or there might be dozens of jeeps and trucks and hundreds of spectators in for a mud rally. I've been to both, as well as authentic Indian Pow Wow, a Civil War reenactment and a Vintage Garden Show. Where is this paradise? Right here in Mount Dora... about 2 miles from the Inn, on highway 441. Perhaps my description pokes a bit of fun... but in all seriousness, it is a must-see, must-experience place. Are there truly antique and other deals to be found? Absolutely. I am a confessed non-shopper and a grade C negotiator and have managed to truck home a couple of real treasures. My latest find was an antique, mounted, wild Florida boar head. I know, I know, you're probably thinking "dang, I can't believe he beat me to it". Sorry, but you've got to be quick when it comes to finding such treasures. But don't worry, there are still plenty of great finds... including the Pickle Man, with a selection of the greatest homemade pickles you have ever eaten - try one of the spicy hot. Trust me, a day at Renninger's is a day not soon forgotten. Please visit Renninger's if you would like to find out more about some of their upcoming events.

Lakeside Inn History
For most of the Inn's 130 year history, it was operated seasonally, closing each summer, as did most hotels in State of Florida. During the summer, there was typically a live-in caretaker. Throughout much of the 1920's one such caretaker, Frank Harding, would keep a small herd of milk cows in an area behind the Terrace Building. He would then sell and deliver the milk to a number of Mount Dora residents. Each October the cows would be herded back to their winter home, located just a few blocks away on Clayton Street. That same caretaker, Frank Harding, and his wife had seven children, all seven of whom eventually graduated from college. Quite a feat if you consider that in that era, only about 12% of the US population would attend and graduate from college.

Seeing Stars...
I know I talk a lot about what a great place Mount Dora is for walking. Certainly all of the downtown shops are easily reached, as is the Post Office and City Hall. There are a number of great places to get hair care or even a massage. You can walk to a real, honest to goodness, independent book store. There are a several very good attorneys that have offices in the downtown area, as well as a few good real estate firms. We have a dentist, a number of churches and even a synagogue, all within easy walking distance. We have a number of wonderful parks, as well as a full service marina. We also have a number of historic sites - one of which also serves as a hotel, plus we even have a small museum. Naturally we have restaurants, coffee shops and ice cream parlors... but we also have a place where you can purchase food for your pet along with perhaps a squeaky toy. All of this is within walking distance. I get the sense... and have been told, that being able to walk to so many things is a real attractive attribute of Mount Dora. Well, here is something else that I want to add to the list of "neat things about Mount Dora"... the stars. Not the Tom Selleck type, but the up in the sky type. Star gazing from the grounds of the Inn or out at the end of our dock is fantastic. The next time you come for a visit and you're walking back from one of the downtown restaurants or from getting a late night ice cream cone, treat yourself to 10-15 minutes of looking up and observing the Mount Dora stars. I promise you won't regret the experience, especially when one or more of the many owls we have living around us starts hooting. It is indeed a natural WOW.
I hope to see you soon.
