Chadashot: What's New at BYDS?

Jodi Gold's Art Students
Modelling the Best of Modernism and Motifs

Jillian's Primary Colors 3 Take a walk along the Sondock Family Art Gallery wall and look closely at the spectacular and impressive student art work that veteran instructor Jodi Gold has elicited from her many BYDS students. It isn't just fanciful, free-form imagination--the art you see is quite intentional and is designed to introduce a range of core strategies that led to breakthroughs in art over the past 150 years. You will see vestiges of Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh and other greats of the modernist era. Students are applying striking techniques in their brushstrokes, their coloration, their shapes

Jordan's Primary Colors 2
These three-dimensional, multi-media works, shown above, created by the Kindergarten classes, centered around a lesson in primary colors and the surprises you get when you mix primary colors.

and shadings.

We think this is creativity at its best, and we salute Ms. Gold for her tenacity and her belief in what her students can  accomplish.

Take a look at the sampling below of student art with brief write-ups on what they are achieving, then check out the art up close for yourself next time you walk along the front hallway.

You'll be awestruck and amazed!

Kuperman's Still Life
Alex Kuperman's (5th Grade) still life is inspired by Cezanne. The lessons applied include balance of contents, contrast in colors, and gradations of shade. The splashes of color intensity surrounding the subject add vibrancy and dimension to the composition. Notice the slight spillage of grapes over the bowl's edge, which lends a tone of frivolity to the work.

Musher's Van Gogh

Talia Musher's (Kindergarten) composition borrows from Van Gogh. Her task was to apply the brush using various angles and heavy touches to create the energetic sky scene. The free-hand dabs of black paint for the window eyes and door mouths present a human facade to this desolate night scene. The cut-out roof tops seem besieged by the crowd of stars.

Cowan's Picasso

Abby Cowan's (3rd Grade) jambled and disjointed portrait takes from the cubist phase of Picasso's signature work. The dark geometric tracings frame a complicated mess of facial contours. The surrounding regions of separate colorations blur the distinction between subject and environment, lending a puzzling and receding sense of identity for this female image. The hat is a whimsical embellishment to her silly, yet bold facial features.
