Tu Bishvat Integrates Science and Religion at BYDS
BYDS joined forces with the Bellaire Nature Center on Thursday, continuing the wonderful tradition of celebrating Tu Bishvat by integrating religious studies with science, art, math and geography. The program enabled students to understand nature in a modern approach. BYDS First and Second Grade classes took the short drive up Newcastle to meet with master gardeners and environmental counselors led by Mrs. Anne Eisner, the Activity Director at the BNC. The students analyzed the components of trees, navigated with maps, explored the agriculture of trees, learned about animals who depend on trees, prepared pottery filled with soil, and planted their own seeds.
Second Grade students prepared for the day by completing a family tree project , tracing their roots three and four generations back. Students exhibited creative thinking and artistic ability to express their connection with their family roots.
Back at school, the festivities continued as students learned about the different kinds of fruit we traditionally eat on Tu Bishvat, and then everyone celebrated with a traditional Tu Bishvat Seder.
We wish to thank all the many parents who helped throughout the day by preparing the beautiful Tu Bishvat food trays, as well as taking part in the driving to and from the Bellaire Nature Center. Special thanks to Heidi Bazarsky, Amy Zadok, and Dionne Miller for leading the effort to make this year's Tu Bishvat extra special!
