Presidential Research and Presentations

Highlight Third Grade Project

BYDS Third Grade students took to the main podium this week with their Presidents of the United States Project. The Reiches Hall event capped a month-long research project that began before Thanksgiving. Students did research in the library using traditional reference sources plus books from the library's main collection. In addition, students were guided toward reliable educational web sources to help with historical information. The process of choosing which president to research and enact was partly random, with individual preferences factored in: teachers conducted a lottery, and number one selected first from his/her three picks, then number two selected, etc. Everybody was happy with the process and the outcome.

A big audience of parents, teachers, and staff assembled on Wednesday, December  19, for the culminating event. The presidential speeches offered key biographical bits of information and highlights from their terms in office. The students all dressed in the style of their chosen president and gave their presentations at the podium using the microphone. We thank our Third Grade teachers Harriet Bormaster and Jomel Sumira for their outstanding work guiding all of their students to this successful finale!

BYDS Girls Run 5K, Learn Life Lessons

We are so proud of thirteen girls from Beth Yeshurun Day School, plus one of their friends from Mark Twain Elementary, who ran a 5K race in early December as part of Girls on the Run, a national organization to inspire young girls to be confident, healthy and learn how to run. The team trained for 12 weeks and then ran a 5K along the Bayou between Hillcroft and Chimney Rock. Each girl crossed the finish line and also achieved many more life lessons of supporting their teammates, combating bullying and communicating effectively with family and friends. BYDS will host another training session in the Spring, with a concluding 5K event in May. There are just a few more spots open for the spring; if interested, and to learn more information, please contact Gavi Roisman at
gavi@roisman.com. The BYDS participants included: Morgan Brandt, Eliana Roisman, Makayla Wigder, Maya Zehavi, Hadar Zeevi, Stevie Nates, Lauren Kapiloff, Rachel Melman, Judith Roisman, Noa Strauss, Sophie Kalmin, Rebekah Grzybinski, and Katie Faour, in addition to Jadyn Grossman (from Mark Twain Elementary). We all thank the coaches that guided and mentored these girls throughout the fall-Gavi Roisman and Cari Brandt.

 Sharon Knafo Receives Doctoral Honors

We are very pleased to announce that Sharon Knafo, BYDS Judaic Studies Director, received his Doctor of Education degree on Sunday, December 16, at the graduation ceremonies for the University of Memphis in Tennessee. Dr. Knafo defended his dissertation earlier this fall in Memphis, a paper analyzing the topic of leadership transitions in Jewish day schools across the country. His graduate studies encompassed five years of original research and studies. All of us in the Beth Yeshurun community extend a big and hearty mazel tov to Dr. Knafo on this most impressive academic milestone!

BYDS Garden

The BYDS West End Garden Project is Underway

Parent volunteers put on their garden gloves, grabbed their trowels and cultivators, and got dirty this week outside the Pre-K classrooms. The garden boxes were installed in the summer of 2011, and last year Pre-K students planted herbs that produced an abundant harvest for last spring's Pre-K Farmer's Market. The plan is to do the same this year, with some enhancements to the produce being planted. Can you devote an hour sometime in January to helping us prepare the boxes? If so, contact Mr. E at telieff@bethyeshurun.org and let him know your availability to help out with this endeavor. We thank our parent garden volunteers who are getting us off to a great start: Roanna Pinsky, Sarah Soloff, and Liz Leiman!
