Fifth Grade Students Visit Jones Hall for Symphony Program
Combining Art and Music
Fifth Grade students soaked up some prime Houston culture this morning with a field trip to Jones Hall to take part in this year's Houston Symphony performance for the schools. The theme this year was "Music Inspiring Art; Art Inspiring Music." Associate Conductor Robert Franz conducted and emceed the program before a fully packed Jones Hall, with hundreds of yellow buses lining the streets outside. The program included works by Mussorgsky, with excerpts from "Pictures at an Exhibition," Prokiev's Fifth Symphony, Ravel's "Tobeau de Couperin," and pieces from Debussy.
A central part of the conductor's lecture included the connection between the three primary colors that produce visual art and the four "orchestral colors" that produce the symphony music: strings, winds, brass, and percussion.
Throughout the culminating piece from Mussorgsky, the video screens high above the Jones Hal stage displayed a dazzling slide show of artwork created by Houston area elementary students. The artwork displayed was part of a city-wide assignment the Houston Symphony made available by sending out CD's of the Mussorgsky music to hundreds of schools, and in turn the city's children sent in over 20,000 pieces of art inspired by the music. Conductor Franz facilitated a question and answer session with the students toward the end of the program. Here are two sample questions from the young audience: "Was the harp the first string instrument ever made??" The harpist answered this question: yes, it was the first string instrument in history. Another question: "If you uncoil a French Horn, how long would it be?" The French Horn player answered: About 18 to 22 feet long!
It was a fantastic experience for our entire Fifth Grade class and teacher team!

BYDS 4th Grade Tours Texas |
BYDS Fourth Grade Students Take Virtual Tour Throughout Texas
--special report to the Express, by 4th Grade Teacher Kelli Sydow--
BYDS 4th graders took a virtual bus tour of Texas in Ms. Sydow's writing class today. The bus departed BYDS and toured all 4 of the natural regions of Texas. The tour made one stop in each of the 4 regions.
In the Mountains and Basins region, students disembarked the bus in Big Bend National Park and participated in a Science lesson about the animals that live there, such as Falcon, Javelina, Horned Toad, Mountain Lion and Tarantula.
In the Coastal Plains Region, students stepped off the bus to tour NASA and engage in interactive educational games; one pop assignment on this stop included a persuasive letter convincing NASA which of our BYDS 4th graders should accompany the astronauts on their next space mission. We are excited to learn who was chosen!
Next up was the Texas Panhandle and stopping in Palo Duro Canyon State Park where hiking and mountain biking took place. Students studied the park's climate including temperature and precipitation.
Finally, with the class singing Texas Our Texas (The Texas State Song), the bus made its way into the Central Plains Region stopping in Fort Worth, also known as "Cowtown." Students visited The Stockyards, The National Cowgirl Museum, and The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. While there, students were treated to poetry and songs written by cowboys as a way to entertain themselves and get through the long lonely nights on the cattle trail.
Sad to leave the company of crooning cowboys, and barely able to drag their exhausted selves back onto the bus, our intrepid day trippers slept peacefully in their seats, sweet smiles lighting their angelic faces as the wheels on the bus turned round and round ... delivering them back home to you.
