VAFB Quarterly Awards
Rudie Henderson, our Military Affairs Chairperson, has been representing our Chamber at the VAFB Quarterly Awards for some time now. He has worked hard to reach out to our members and secure donations for the honored Airmen each quarter. We have recently been informed that the format of the Awards program is changing. We have been asked to provide certificates in place of physical items. We have been so fortunate to have a supportive community and hope this new format will be an easy transition for us all. Some of you already gave a gift certificate for a product or service and that will continue to be accepted. We will no longer be able to take bottles of wine, gift baskets, or other physical items. However, a gift certificate for a bottle of wine will be acceptable. They have also requested we gather the donations 2 weeks in advance of the Awards luncheon, so we will be reaching out a bit earlier than before. We apologize for the change in the format, but we are doing everything we can to maintain the exposure for our Buellton business community. If you have any questions regarding the new format, please feel free to contact the Chamber, we'll be happy to help. Again, we thank you for your contributions for those who serve our country so we may carry on with our day to day lives.

The Real Truth about
Buellton Billboards
You may have seen recently on the news or heard it on the street the subject of a digital billboard proposal submitted by the Buellton Chamber of Commerce.
We would like to share with you the history of the existing billboards and the purpose of this proposed sign.
As you are aware, there are two billboards to the north and two to the south of Buellton. These signs were installed many years ago when the construction of Hwy 101 took place and bypassed the Avenue of Flags (the original Highway through town). This caused traffic to flow away from the downtown area, which affected the local businesses along this route. Vincent B Evans, then owner of Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant, was instrumental in erecting the signs we see today. These were approved by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors on a 5-0 vote. The purpose was to direct people to Buellton and the downtown area.
The Buellton Chamber of Commerce owns and operates these signs today, which includes: Land rent, Utilities, Permits, and License. Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant contributes a portion of rent on the 3 mile sign south of Buellton and they also assist with the maintenance (paint & repair) of the signs.
The sign to the north of Buellton, along the frontage road, currently sits on a property with an approved project which would most likely require the sign to be removed. Understanding the future of this board may be in jeopardy, the Chamber began to explore other options to maintain the visibility along the 101 corridor.
A sign ordinance was approved by the current City Council on March 14, 2013 with a 5-0 vote which allowed for a Community Identification sign. Under the ordinance, the sign must be sponsored by the Buellton Chamber of Commerce or the City of Buellton and must promote Santa Ynez Valley businesses. As we looked into costs and options available to us, we realized a digital sign would allow more businesses the opportunity to have freeway exposure, which would attract more visitors and in turn generate revenue for the City.
We reached out to professional sign companies to conduct our research and also presented the idea to the Planning Commission for their input and to see if it was worth exploring any further. The Planning Commission was in favor of the idea, so we continued to move forward with our research and planning.
Our full intent for the Community Identification Sign was to allow our businesses the ability to promote to a larger audience and the revenue generated from the sign was to go back into our community. Our goal with the revenue generated was to explore the idea of athletic fields or an event complex and other opportunities that would enhance our community.
We know there is misinformation being circulated in the community that is simply not true and we are here to clarify any of your concerns. The project has been withdrawn from the planning process and is no longer in motion.
As you know, the Buellton Chamber has been a driving force for the progress you see happening in Buellton. We are and will remain Pro-Business and we will continue to be forward thinking for our community and always put Buellton First.

How may I help you today?
When it comes to customer service some people have a very long memory about how they were treated. I'll share a story about a customer that was treated poorly by an establishment 20 years ago. Yes, 20 years ago and to this day this person has not done business with the company, nor has he even shopped in the same town. This may be an extreme example, but it is true. In this modern age of Trip Advisor, Yelp, Facebook and many other sources where people can share their experiences, it is imperative that those that are the face of your business do whatever they can to ensure the customer walks away with a positive experience. A company with excellent customer service is more likely to get repeat business from customers. People that have a positive experience with a business, will likely tell two or three others about their experience. A person who has a bad customer service experience will likely tell between nine and twenty people. The efforts that go into maintaining quality customer service can really pay dividends over time. So take a moment and think about how you and your staff can create that positive experience to each and every customer that walks through your doors. It might just be as simple as a

Congratulations Mother Hubbard's
Determining your millionth customer may not be an exact science, but Jon and Doniece McDermott, owners of Mother Hubbard's restaurant in Buellton, figure they got it close. On Saturday, the couple recognized Valley residents Greg and Aryn Wolf as the establishment's millionth (and necessarily, millionth-plus-one) customers.
Mother Hubbard's has been in business since 1978 and the McDermotts have owned it for nearly 16 of those years.
"Back when we first purchased the restaurant, we started keeping records of how many customers per day were coming in," said Jon McDermott. By his calculations, he realized at one point last year that the restaurant would see its millionth customer in 2014. "We started keeping a close track on a daily basis this year," he said. "In July we realized it would be sometime in August. On Saturday, we counted to 179, and that's who it was." It was the Wolfs' first time at Mother Hubbard's. They were greeted with bells and balloons and were given a lifetime gift certificate for a weekly meal at the restaurant.
Congrats to the winners and congrats to Mother Hubbard's for their success!
