School Bells
will Ring
August 13th, the SYV High School will be back in session. Summer is coming to an end for many kids, so make the best of it. Here's some ideas you may do to celebrate back to school:
-Offer back to school specials
-Celebrate Teachers! Discount coffee, lunch, supplies, clothes...
-Celebrate Parents! Breakfast special for first day of school, spa day, coffee & donut, detail the car...
-Celebrate Kids! Rewards for good grades, good manners, movie coupons, school supplies, special snack...
Think outside the box and find a reason to celebrate and/or offer a special. The more our businesses stay in touch with our kids and community, the better we all do and the stronger our community grows.
Remember to drive safe and stop for red flashing lights on the bus. Protect our future.
Good luck and have fun!

10 REASONS TO SHOP LOCAL
Why shop at a locally owned business first? The following 10 reasons show how more money spent at local businesses is reinvested in your community creating diversity and helping the community maintain or create its unique appeal.
- Shopping local creates jobs.
Shops in our town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local community. - Local independent shops invest more in our communities.
Local businesses are proportionately more generous in their support of local charities, schools and community events. Supporting local shops means a financial impact on your community. - Local shops sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices.
Many people fall out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available. - Shopping local saves you money.
Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us that local business equals expensive. If you add travel, fees to transfer items and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. - Shopping local retains our communities.
People don't like losing shops and services in small towns but don't equate this to how they spend their money. - Shopping local retains our distinctiveness.
Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet the changing population needs. - Shopping local saves the environment.
Local shops often stock a high percentage of local sourced goods which do not require long car and bus journeys, helping reduce our global footprint. - Local shops are for everyone.
Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for the elderly and young generations and those without transportation. - Local shops value you more.
Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service. - Shopping local saves services.
Private and public sector services tend to cluster around shops. As shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants, etc.

Thank you
Santa Ynez Valley Marriott
As always, the Marriott staff rolled out the red carpet for the July Chamber mixer. We enjoyed an evening out by the pool with Chef Ofelio making his famous tacos paired with our local Ken Brown Wine. We truly appreciate having a premier property like the Marriott right here in Buellton who support our community and contribute to our economy. Locals are always welcome at the Starting Gate restaurant and Winner's Circle Lounge. Stop by soon for some down home hospitality.
We sincerely appreciate all our hosts do to make our members feel welcomed and provide a venue for networking to take place. The winner of the Perpetual Drawing was Crystal Clear Window Cleaning, owner Ron Bender. He won the $80 jackpot. We'll start the jackpot over next month with $25.
Thank you to our members who continue to support our raffle.
We truly appreciate your donations.

Job Killer Bills to Be Considered
by Senate Fiscal Committee
The Senate Fiscal Committee is scheduled to consider a number of California Chamber of Commerce opposed job killer bills when legislators return to Sacramento on Monday, August 4.
These job killer bills are on the August 4 hearing schedule for the Senate Appropriations Committee.
AB 1522 (Gonzalez; D-San Diego) Paid Sick Leave. Increases employer mandates by requiring all employers, large and small, to provide all employees in California with paid sick leave, and threatens employers with statutory penalties and litigation under the Private Attorneys General Act for alleged violations.
AB 1897 (R. Hernandez; D-West Covina) Contractor Liability. Imposes liability on a contracting entity for the contractor's wage-and-hour violations and lack of workers' compensation coverage, despite the lack of evidence that the contracting entity controlled the working conditions or wages of the contractor's employees.
AB 2416 (Stone; D-Scotts Valley) Unproven Wage Liens. Creates a dangerous and unfair precedent in the wage-and-hour arena by allowing employees to file liens on an employer's real or personal property, or property where work was performed, based upon alleged, yet unproven, wage claims.
CalChamber encourages members to contact their senators to voice opposition to these job killer bills. Easy to edit sample letters are available at www.calchambervotes.com.
Hannah-Beth Jackson is a member of the Budget and Fiscal Review Committee. She can be contacted at senator.jackson@senate.ca.gov or 805-965-0862.
