 City Council Chatter

City residents will be electing 3 Council Members on the November 4, 2014 ballot.  The candidate filing period is July 14 through August 8 and will be extended to August 13 if one of the three incumbents does not pull papers to run for office.

We would like to thank the Council for renewing the contract for the Visitors Bureau at their recent Council meeting.  There was consideration for going out to bid for the service we provide to the City, but our contract was approved on a 3-2 vote with Ed Andrisek, John Connolly, and Holly Sierra in favor and Judith Dale and Leo Elovitz dissenting.

The Council welcomed a new City Planner, Irma Tucker who will be assisting Marc Bierdzinski and our Planning department with the projects coming up.

The City also, contracted with Ravatt Albrecht & Associates to assist with architectural and landscape design for larger projects coming into Buellton.

If you would like to listen in to any of the discussion around these topics or more, you may go to the City of Buellton website.

Wine Bloggers Conference Coming to Buellton

July 11-13

If you see a lot of people meandering around Buellton next weekend, they are here for the Wine Bloggers Conference.  The Marriott will play host to over 300 bloggers.  The SB Vintner's Association and their members will be educating the bloggers about our County's wine which the bloggers will then be tweeting and blogging to their followers.  We are excited to have them here in Buellton and invite you to welcome them as well.

In July, we are reminded of our Founding Fathers and those who sought for our freedom.  Below is a copy of the Declaration of Independence.  It's not a document we look at every day, but we sure need to be reminded of how fortunate we are to live and work in America and realize what a great country we have.  We have many men and woman who continue to fight for our freedom every day and as we go out and enjoy BBQ's, poolside parties, Fireworks, and parades, please remember those who have their boots on the ground defending our country and remember you celebrate your freedom because of them.

Here are some facts you might find interesting for the 4th of July.

Be safe and enjoy your holiday.

July 16th Mixer

at the SYV Marriott

555 McMurray Road

Join us for our July Mixer as we head on over to the Marriott.  Mike Hendrick and his crew tend to go overboard when it comes to hosting the Chamber Mixer.  Showcasing all they have to offer in the area of hospitality.  From luxury hotel rooms; Starbucks coffee, meeting rooms, restaurants, bars, bocce ball, Hertz rental cars, and much, much more, the Marriott aims to please.  We are so fortunate to have this property in Buellton and invite you to come see for yourself all they have to offer.
Our Mixers provide a great way to network and meet fellow members and members of our community.  We encourage you to bring business cards because you never know who you might meet and want to do business with.  Also, another way to promote your business is to donate an item for our raffle drawing.  We always appreciate the generosity of our members and the recognition goes a long way when you put your name out there one more time.  Please contact the Chamber with any questions or to make a contribution to our raffle.

See you at the Marriott.
Arts on the Avenue - July 5th
11-4pm
Be sure to make your way down to the Avenue of Flags this Saturday to enjoy the Annual Arts on the Avenue.  Presented by the Buellton Rec Department.  You will enjoy live music, food, beer, arts/crafts, kids activities and more.
The event runs from Noon-4 and is sure to be fun!

Thank you Standing Sun Winery

What a wonderful evening we enjoyed as we were treated to a night of networking and fabulous wine at Standing Sun Winery.  Christine and crew rolled out the red carpet for us and showcased the winery and the varietals from Standing Sun.  Owner, John Wright, was there in spirit as he and the 4 generations of John's were traveling across the US in a RV.  Many of our guests took in the fantastic exhibit at the gallery and were in aw of the display.  Be sure to gather your friends and head on over to Standing Sun this summer to enjoy fabulous wine, great music concerts, and the unique art gallery.
To follow the story of John's journey across the US, log into Facebook and follow "ForJohns".  They are creating great memories as they cross the US.  Safe travels to them all.

Thank you to our members who continue to support our raffle.
We truly appreciate your donations.

Business of the Month
Terravant Wine Company

The Terravant Wine Company was established in 2008 as a custom crush facility for Santa Barbara County wineries. Today 22 wineries make their wine in our facility and we have expanded our production to include private labeling for many national accounts. Terravant produces over 300k cases of premium and luxury wines each year. Our focus continues to be Santa Barbara County and its produce.

In 2009, out of our desire to host travelers, clients, and friends at our winery, we created the Terravant restaurant. Our restaurant features local produce, lamb, beef, spices, beer and wines. It is our goal to serve you a complete meal where nearly all of the ingredients are grown or raised within a 30 mile radius.

We appreciate you joining us and look forward to sharing our passion for food and wine with you.

What's Coming to Buellton?
So...Fences are up, dirt is being moved, and we're finally seeing some action on the corner of Hwy 246 and McMurray Road.  Above is a rendering of what we can expect the project to resemble once it is finished.  This is the retail portion that is being worked on right now. The back residential area is to follow.

Who is coming?  Well, we do know that Tractor Supply will be the anchor tenant.  We have heard and have been involved in conversations with other retailers and the leasing agent, but we need to wait to have firm confirmation before divulging what else is to come.

With the technology of today and online shopping, we can tell you this: retail is changing direction and what we see coming to strip malls and shopping centers are services we may not purchase online.  For example:  Hair salons, nail salons, restaurants, etc. We also have the demographics.  The population of Buellton is nearly 5000 and the entire Santa Ynez Valley is around 20,000.  We are a rural area, so distribution comes into play.  There are many factors to look at when a retailer looks at Buellton.  They have their map and plans of where they want to expand and sometimes Buellton fits that mold and other times, we don't.  One thing we are fortunate to have is the tourism population.  We see millions of visitors on an annual basis and this population offers a greater opportunity for a retailer to make a profit if they build in Buellton.

So, yes while Trader Joes, Target, IKEA, and all those big box stores would be great to have at our back door, the reality is our beautiful Valley we call home, does not warrant this type of retailer.

You may stay informed with all the details of what is coming to Buellton by visiting the City of Buellton website and looking at "New Projects".  You will see a list of projects either approved, in the pipeline, or in progress.
Stay tuned as Buellton transforms and blossoms into an even greater City!

The Power of Referrals
Word of mouth is very powerful tool in the business world.  Try using incentives for your customers and employees to increase your traffic.  Here are some ideas as taken from, "201 Great Ideas for Your Small Business".
  • Establish a "best customer" program.  Reward referrals with cash, free shipping, two-for-one and early-bird specials, or extra discounts on products they buy frequently.
  • Ask customers to refer new business to you.
  • Publicize referrals on your web site or newletter.  People love to be recognized for helping you succeed.
  • Offer incentives to your employees who refer new business.  A half-day off with pay is a great way to say thank you for landing a new client or customer.
  • Thank customers for referrals by sending flowers, a fruit basket, a gift certificate for a restaurant, or movie tickets.
