Letter from the President
Steven Brown
Dear Friends,

Greyston, at its core, has always been about the paths that individuals take and how Greyston can provide support on their journeys.

In this month's newsletter, we highlight two individuals and their stories. These are just examples of the hundreds of individuals who benefit from Greyston's jobs and programs every day.

Greyston has recently garnered some terrific press on the Bakery in Newsday and a profile of Jeff Koslowsky in the Wall Street Journal, one of this year's benefit honorees. (You may not be able to link to these without a subscription.)

The success of individuals to move forward on their path takes time and the right ingredients - just like in our brownies. This year, our new partnership with Whole Foods has seen Greyston Bakery brownies distributed throughout the entire Whole Foods chain and sales have passed $250,000!

All of these success stories could not happen without the support of individuals like this year's honorees, Jeff Koslowsky, Sandy Loewentheil and Ron Moelis who have all distinguished themselves with their commitment to this organization. Please consider joining us on May 22nd at Xaviers on the Hudson to celebrate Greyston.

I hope you will join us in May.

Steven Brown

Greyston In The News

Mike Brady, President of Greyston Bakery, was recently featured on the front page of the Westchester Business Journal. The article was titled "Greyston thrives at crossroads of commerce and need." Here's an excerpt:

Greyston terms itself a "value-based organization." As such, last year it was named New York state's first "benefit corporation." That status, according to Brady, allows the company with complete transparency to factor equally its concerns for social, environmental and financial benefits.

Greyston's just-produced "Benefit Corporation Report" for 2012, according to Brady, "demonstrates to consumers and business partners how we are accomplishing our mission. It emphasizes the importance of other factors beyond purely financial.

"On a broad level, we are driving a new market economy where consumers and businesses make buying decisions based on the values of the companies they buy from," he said. "The challenge is that people in Westchester don't know there is a revolutionary and innovative business in their backyard."

A Greyston Story:
Tonya

Unemployed and down on her luck, Tonya first learned about Greyston as she searched for an affordable apartment. In the true spirit of PathMaking in action, through the Housing Program, Tonya also discovered Greyston's comprehensive Workforce Development Program.

With a background in cooking in hand, Tonya enrolled in the program's Culinary Arts Class, where she learned professional kitchen fundamentals and landed a coveted position at a trendy new eatery in the Yonkers area - where she is now the Assistant Manager. Tonya's dreams are taking shape as she plans to open her own restaurant one day.

"Greyston gave me an opportunity to live out my true passion.  They believed in me and gave me a chance to prove that I can succeed." ~ Tonya

A Greyston Story:
William

William was unemployed and looking for a job in his neighborhood in Southwest Yonkers. He came to Greyston Bakery, put his name on the waiting list and continued to pound the pavement looking for work. Most of the time, at the end of the each day, he ended up shooting some hoops at his local playground and hoping that tomorrow would be the day that he found work.

William recently was invited for an orientation session at the bakery and started working on the main production line. Today, he has completed his apprenticeship and is a full time baker working as part of the Mixing Team.

"I am still shooting hoops. The difference is that now I'm working hard and bringing home a paycheck; the hoop is out behind the bakery and I'm having some fun on my lunch break." ~ William
