Happy Independence Day!
Today, Monday, August 17th
In order to foster independence and responsibility and to ensure the safety of all children, starting today, August 17th, all students will be responsible for walking themselves to their classrooms. If you choose to come inside to pick up or drop off your car rider, the school asks that you stop in the front lobby and allow your child to walk to and from class independently.

BACK the JACK Starts Today
August 17th - October 2nd!
The Nickajack Elementary School Foundation's BACK the JACK campaign is here! Our goal is $65,000 and we know we can do it with your support. The funds will go towards multiple iPad carts for the school, student enrichment programs, a second computer lab and teacher grants!
There are many ways you can donate. The easiest way is to visit our website at www.nesfoundation.com/donate. We will also take cash and checks sent to school and placed in the black box by the main office. Please make checks payable to Nickajack Elementary School Foundation. And don't forget about corporate matching! Foundation members will also be around the school throughout the campaign and we will gladly take your donation then. Chick-fil-A Spirit Night ,Tuesday August 18th
Tomorrow, from 5pm-7pm
Our first Spirit Night of the new school year is Tuesday, August 18th, from 5pm to 7pm, at our PTA Platinum Pal Chick-fil-A located at 3100 South Cobb Drive, near Kroger. Our Front Office team will be hosting. Bring the family for dinner and show your spirit!
Be sure to sign the guest book during your visit, as a percentage of sales goes back to Nickajack.

Kindness and Compassion Club for K-2
Deadline for registration: Friday, August 21st
The Nickajack Kindness and Compassion Club is an after school program committed to promoting increased kindness, empathy, and social acceptance throughout the school and greater community. The club focuses on teaching students to be kind and compassionate towards others through anti-bullying curricula, lessons about current social issues, and numerous service learning projects.
For the 2015-16 school year, K-2nd graders will meet Wednesdays from 2:30 - 3:30 pm beginning September 2nd and concluding December 9th. (The 3rd - 5th grade club will meet weekly on Wednesdays during second semester.) Click here for more information and for the registration form. |

5th Graders Needed for Safety Patrol
Applications due by August 27th
We are looking for some great 5th Graders! All 5th grade students at NES have the opportunity to be a member of the Safety Patrol. Safety Patrol members assist fellow students with basic school duties, including in the hallways, at car & bus rider areas, and greeting parents and visitors in the lobby. Important Message for Parents of ASEP
Procedures for After School Clubs & Classes
Will your student be participating in one or more of the After School Enrichment Programs? The NES PTA is working closely with our teachers, staff, and ASEP vendors to make sure students enrolled in these programs are guided to their clubs and programs, and later to dismissal, successfully.
Please look for instructions from your ASEP contact with regards to steps parents need to take to make sure their student, and the student's homeroom teacher, is aware of their club schedule, plans for ASP or car rider transportation afterwards as well as additional information. We will all be working together to make sure your student has a great experience with their after school activities!

PTA Pal Spotlight: Vinings School of Art
Vinings School of Art now starting its 10th year of offering the ARTS to Smyrna!
Vinings School of Art, a Gold PTA Pal, is now enrolling for 2015 classes! They are located 1 mile away from NES, in Ivy Walk, at the corner of South Atlanta Road and Cumberland Parkway (EW Connector). Vinings School of Art offers:
- Fine Arts (drawing, painting, sculptures, clay) for children age 2-15 yr., adult-evening courses , art supplies included
- Spanish Language (6 different levels of children's Spanish study.....beginner to advanced levels-these classes progress so student learn more at teach level)
- Dramatic Arts/Acting for Kids: help create and develop the script with your class....the children create the characters! limit 8 students
- Music Education and Learning to Play Piano (limit 4 students in a 1 hour class-rate $15 per hour, also private lessons available for additional fee)
- Art full Parties---still just $215 for a 2 hour custom art party for 10 total children or 10 adults, $265 for an art party with up to 15 children!

ART camps: half day OR full day camps Sept. 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 (choose your day or days) includes PE/Fitness session in the gym of the dance studio next door.
All classes with 4-10 students per class cost between $15 or less per 1 hr. of class

PTA Pal Spotlight: MathWizard of Smyrna
Open House on Saturday, August 22nd
 One of our new PTA Pals, MathWizard of Smyrna Learning Center, is pleased to announce they are opening on September 1st, and are enrolling new students. Please join them for an Open House, on Saturday, August 22nd, from 11am to 2pm. Stop by any time to play games, ask questions, enjoy refreshments, and take a tour of the Learning Center.
The same carefully crafted curriculum that you use as a MathWizard Tutoring by Mail family is used at these Learning Centers. Other benefits of attending weekly classes at a Learning Center include:
- Receiving one-on-one attention of a qualified MathWizard teacher who presents a proper lesson on the topic of the week
- Fun with other students in small classes with a maximum student/teacher ratio of 8 to 1
- Learning along with other children who are grouped by grade and subject
- Receiving direct feedback on your student's performance and progress
