2015-2016 BACK the JACK Campaign
August 17 - October 2
Back the Jack logo

The Nickajack Elementary School Foundation is once again gearing up for the annual BACK the JACK campaign. What a wonderful way for parents and the community to play an active part in the education of our children.

For those new to NES, BACK the JACK is a fundraising campaign used to provide technology and to support academic excellence and student success. This year's goal is $65,000. We've done it in the past and we can do it again with your support. With the support and feedback from the teachers and staff, we are currently reassessing the school's needs for the year. A complete list of our planned purchases will be available on our website in August. Learn more about the campaign and the NES Foundation at nesfoundation.com.
See How  Our Garden Grows!
The Nickajack Garden has flourished this summer

Garden Thanks to an IBM Community Grant, the guidance of Mrs. Heflin, and help from parent volunteers, our Garden Club students were able to plant an array of vegetables and flowers this past spring in new, raised garden beds, and have been maintaining the gardens as they grow this summer.  The raised beds include squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, pumpkins, sunflowers, and herbs.  The students were able to have many of the plants grow from seed!

In the words of Mrs. Heflin, our Science Lab teacher that heads up our Garden Club, "It is an effort of love by a group of families hoping to teach their children that our food does not come from Kroger or Publix but from the Earth; that's why we need to take care of our ecosystems and habitats".  Be sure to check out the gardens at Sneak-a-Peak!

Mrs. Heflin has signed the Nickajack Garden up for the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge! Learn more about reviving the health of bees, butterflies, birds and more, and even register your own garden, at the Environmental Education in Georgia web site.

Thank you to Mrs. Heflin and the Garden Club for helping our students grow their environmental knowledge and experience.

Rising K Playdate a Success

The NES PTA would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the families that came out to the rising kindergartners playdate on July 11th. We had over 70 parents and children stop by over the course of two hours!!  It's beyond exciting to see all the positive energy coming into Nickajack this year.

The event showcased the most recent additions to our outdoor facilities, most notably our new K-2 play structure, bleachers and fence. The new play set was funded by SPLOST, and the new black fence and wooden bleachers were funded by our PTA. The improvements could not have been made without the efforts of Scott Trammel with CCSD. Please keep an eye out for continuous PTA-lead campus improvements throughout the 2015-2016 school year.

Back to School Supply Lists

Be sure to check out the Nickajack Home Page for back to school supply lists for each grade, as well as other updates.

Summer Reading Challenge Update
Our students are #5 in the state of Georgia

Our Nickajack students have logged over 177,000 minutes so far in the Summer Reading Challenge and are ranked 165th in the country as of July 18th. The Challenge ends September 4th.

Research shows that books in the home, and involved parents make a world of difference in a child's school, and overall life success. Keep them reading every day!

It isn't too late for your student to join in! Log-in information was provided by teachers in May, or register your student at scholastic.com/summer  and be sure to add Nickajack as their school.
