KC Club Community Service Project
Now through May 16th
Heart in hand

Nickajack's Kindness and Compassion Club will be sponsoring a collection drive to support the Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption (APRA) shelter.  KC Club students are requesting your support to help make this project a success!  Please consider donating an item or two from APRA's wish list.  The wish list is posted in several places around the school building and can also be found at the following link:  https://www.atlantapetrescue.org/donate/giving-list/.  Please drop off all item donations in the collection bin in the front lobby.

Our KC Club students are very passionate about this cause.  KC Club K-2nd grade students have made "happy socks" for the cats at the shelter.  They stuffed socks with poly-fil and catnip to create fun toys for the kittens and cats awaiting new homes.  KC Club 3rd - 5th grade students also made cuddly fleece blankets for the cats and small dogs at APRA.  Thank you in advance for your donations to support this wonderful agency in our community!

KC Club Coordinator

Cobb County Volunteer of the Year for NES
Mrs. Katy Weihe
Cobb Schools Foundation
The Cobb Schools Foundation asks each of the Cobb County schools to nominate a volunteer from each school to put forth as their Volunteer of the Year.  Volunteers are nominated and voted on by staff and faculty of each school. These volunteers are then recognized by the Foundation via an awards luncheon.

Nickajack's Cobb County Volunteer of the Year is Mrs. Katy Weihe:

Ms. Weihe not only volunteers in her children's classrooms, but she serves the school as a whole.  She is the coordinator of the book fair and the character education chairperson for the PTA.  She has taken this role to the next level by volunteering her time every week to facilitate the Kindness and Compassion Club.  Under her guidance, the club has grown to include 80 students in grades K-5!  She handles every aspect of the program from obtaining permission to recruiting parent volunteers to planning service projects each week.  Her list of volunteerism is much longer than this, but these are the two ways that she most greatly impacts our school.  Thank you, Ms. Weihe for ALL that you do!

Mayor's Awards
Student, Staff & Volunteer Recognized

At Mayor's Bacon's most recent City Council Meeting, he recognized students, staff and volunteers selected by the faculty and staff of the Smyrna area schools for their excellence for the second semester of the school year.

Please join us in congratulating Nickajack's recipients of this award!

Student: Katherine Stanek, 5th Grade

Katherine is attentive and works hard in all of her classes. She is very interested in learning the material that is presented and is willing to help others in class if called to do so. She is quiet, courteous, and a great leader. She has a great work ethic. She is kind, friendly, and helpful to those around her regardless of their popularity. Her smile is infectious, and she can always be counted on to do her best.  In addition, her efforts in extracurricular activities such as Girl Scouts, Safety Patrol, and volunteering for the Talent Show, reflect her willingness to work in all areas of school life. Her efforts are certainly worthy of recognition.

Staff: Mrs. Deryl Heflin

This staff member is here at dawn and is consistency thinking of the best way for our students to learn about the different lessons that fall under the subject of "Science."  Her excitement is shared with our students!  She has applied and received many grants that do ONE thing & ONE thing only and that is to get our students enthusiastic about Science.  We have only had the Science Lab in existence for this year (& not even a full year) and the students are learning so much.  They have gotten their hands dirty with planting in the garden-Science is a hands-on subject and Mrs. Heflin has provided the materials and the want-to so that our students are putting their hands on Science.  She has asked and companies have responded by partnering with Nickajack and have provided free labor and supplies.  We are securing more and more items and equipment for our Science Lab because Mrs. Heflin is a go-getter and is not leaving any rock unturned to find money to support the Science-learning efforts at Nickajack. Also, she is a co-sponsor of the Garden Club.  Way to go, Deryl Heflin!!

Volunteer: Dr. Portia Carter
Portia is one of the most generous and dedicated volunteers that Nickajack has ever had and this is her first year here!  She is the parent of twin kindergarten students, Marley and Maddox.  She is always one of the first parents to volunteer to bring in supplies and food items for special events in each of her classrooms.  She also loves to read in both her classes.   Portia and her husband, Wayne, graciously opened up their home and threw a special holiday party outside of school for the students and families in their children's classes so that the families could bond during this time.  While Portia is a first year Nickajack parent, she was still compelled not only to make a difference in her own children's classrooms, but she wanted to impact all of our children.  So she stepped up and is chairing a PTA Committee, the Volunteer Committee, which is responsible for securing volunteers for various PTA, Foundation and school events. She also coordinates the PTA Recognition Initiative, where outstanding parents are nominated and recognized for their efforts.  She also comes in very regularly to shelve books in the media center and her name can been seen on every volunteer sign up to work or to donate.  The book fair committee was very overwhelmed by her generous donation of time and resources.  All of this while as an orthodontist, she runs a very successful orthodontic practice here in Smyrna!   Her practice partners with our PTA as a Gold PTA Pal and it sponsors both PTA and Foundation events such as the Kickball Classic and the Nickajack Dash fun run.  Portia has such a positive attitude, is always a supportive parent and is so devoted to making Nickajack the best place to be!  Portia is also a forward thinker and is already working on a project that she would like to head up for next year that will encourage our young readers to be young authors!  We are so pleased and very fortunate to have Portia and her family as a part of the Nickajack family.
