Spring After School Enrichment Programs
Registration begins Monday, January 14th
Chess
We had had a fantastic Fall session! Our Beginner students learned how all the pieces move, check/checkmate, and some basic strategy. We were very impressed with their progress! Our Intermediate students started to move their game to the next level, with opening, mid and end game tactics/strategy, learning notation, and playing more chess online. Our Advanced class has evolved from playing chess, to becoming very good players! They have analyzed many chess games, working checkmate puzzles, and have been playing more tournament style chess in class.
We look forward to what the Spring will offer. With the amount of returning students, we will have very limited space for all of our classes, so it will be first come, first serve for adding additional students.
Our Friday classes (Intermediate and Advanced) began on 1/11/13.
Our Wednesday classes (Beginners) starts 1/16/13.
All sessions will have 16 classes during the Spring, taking into account holidays, breaks, etc. We will end 5/8/13 for Wednesday and 5/10/13 for Friday classes.
Class fee's remain $40/mo (or 4 classes). We offer a 10% pay in advance of the semester discount if paid in full. In addition to the chess club classes, the Spring will offer many opportunities to play in chess tournaments, primarily in January, February and March. We hope to have many players participating to add to our impressive trophy case at Nickajack Elementary!

PTA Spotlight
Mathnasium
Unhappy with last week's report card? Concerned about CRCT? Confused by the "Common Core"? Looking for a way to enhance your child's love of math? Mathnasium can turn your student into an All-Star MATHlete!
Mathnasium is a learning center where students can go after school and during the summer to boost their math skills. The program is for students in 1st grade through 12th grade. Mathnasium's approach is to determine what a student knows and has not yet mastered, then tailor a personalized and prescriptive learning program. The goal is to significantly increase a child's math skills, understanding of math concepts, and overall school performance, while building confidence and positive attitude toward the subject.
Our "mathletes" are taught in a way that makes sense to kids, with simple language, pictures, manipulatives, and lots of interaction with our team of specialized instructors. When we teach math to kids on their terms at their own pace, they start to enjoy it and feel more confident.
Historically Nickajack's Mathnasium students have seen a 65% improvement in less than 6 months. If your child's recent report card does not reflect their full potential or if you think your child is not being challenged enough, give us a call. We can help!
Mathnasium of Smyrna is conveniently located in the West Village on Atlanta Road and 285. Call today for a free consultation, (770) 436-4949.

Help Us Support Alive Ministries School Wide Service Project
100 Days of School Campaign: Now through Jan. 25th
This year Nickajack Elementary School will be partnering with Alive Ministries, Inc. in the 100 Days of School Campaign to help meet the needs of students & their families right here in Cobb County. Alive Ministries, Inc. establishes food pantries within local schools to address the need of hunger amongst children living in poverty. We hope that you will join us as we challenge each homeroom to collect 100 cans or boxes of food by the 100th day of school. All of the food collected will be donated to the Save It Forward Food Pantries in Cobb County.
This campaign will teach students the importance of helping others and the value of working together. Students will learn that no matter how large or small their contribution is to the campaign, when we work together and each does his/her part, we can make a BIG difference. We want each student to walk away from the campaign feeling like they have made a difference in the life of another child.
We are asking each student to assist his/her homeroom in collecting 100 cans or boxes of food by bringing in non perishable foods or toiletries from now until the 100th day of school, January 25th. No expired items please. On behalf of the teachers and administrators at Nickajack Elementary School, thank you for your support!
