What is AR?
Accelerated Reader Program
Books
Accelerated Reader (or AR) is a progress monitoring software assessment for monitoring the practice of reading.   Nickajack uses the web-based version of this software created by Renaissance Learning, Inc.  The program is currently being funded by our wonderful Foundation and is intended to supplement the reading curriculum.

There are three steps to using Accelerated Reader.
1) Students choose and read a fiction or non-fiction book These books are marked as an AR book by the AR sticker on the spine of the book if they are located in the NES media center.  Or you can go to AR Book Finder to see if the book your child has chosen has an AR test available.
2) Students login to their own unique AR account at school and take a quiz on the book.
3) The teacher receives information that is intended to assist, motivate reading, monitor progress, and target instruction.

All classes 1st-5th grade are currently set up so that each student has his/her own AR account.  Kindergarten classes will set up AR accounts as their students become more skilled at reading.

Parents, ask you teachers about Renaissance Home Connect.  With this feature, you can receive an email each time your child takes an AR test.  It will let you know what test was taken and what their score was on the test.

Volunteer opportunities to assist with AR in your child class are often available.  If you are interested, please contact your child's teacher.
