autumn-trees-fence.jpg Well, we have made it past Halloween and into November.  I don't know about you, but it always seems that these next two months fly by much too quickly and there is always SO much to do!

Even though you will likely be busy with planning holiday events and shopping along with running your business, make sure you carve out some time to market your practice through social and traditional media.  As mentioned last week, there are a lot of things that media producers and pet owners would like to hear (and see), including holiday dangers to pets and gift ideas.

Keep up with us daily with postings on our Facebook page, Twitter account and over at Linked In.

Animals, Veterinarians and VNN Members in the News

We shared this story on our Facebook page earlier in the month, but I think it's worth posting the link once again.  Dr. Michael Watts is a veterinarian who provides columns to his local paper, the Star Exponent, in Virginia.  His articles on the costs of veterinary care are always well thought out and I particularly like this one as he directly compares a visit to his practice with his experience at his daughter's physician's office.  Although we all might wish that the media would stop its focus on the costs of owning pets, that is unlikely to happen and we need to be prepared.  If you are faced with a similar situation, don't forget that we have Message Points on the Costs of Veterinary Care available at MyVNN.com.

VNN Member, Dr. Krista Gibson has done a nice job of taking VNN resources and turning them into a very creative and personalized blog at her hospital's website.  In this case, Dr. Gibson used the April VNN story about obesity in pets and wrote a fun blog that will be sure to get lots of comments and shares.  Check out her story "OMG! Does This Food Bowl Make Me Look Fat?" and share your comments with her!

Three Persian Kittens AAHA NewsStat is reporting that researchers at the University of Florida are suggesting that routine vaccinations for our feline patients should be given in the tail.  This story could create questions from your cat owning clients.  Have you given any thought to how you might insure that you and your staff is prepared to properly and effectively handle client concerns about feline vaccinations?

VNN member, Dr. Deb Eldredge shared this article with us during the past week.  We know that the terms "pet parents" and "guardians" are often used in marketing to pet owners, but is there a potential downside to this?  This is an "op-ed" type of article, but the author does provide some interesting discussion points.

In Huntsville, AL, the local Fox affililate published a story about the use of "high" levels of protein in pet foods and quoted Dr. Dan Aja from Hill's.  When stories like this start hitting the wire, you know that you can always dig into our archives and find great nutrition stories like "Looking for the Right Pet Food" or "Myths About Our Pets' Food".  These resources can help you respond if the media calls or give you ideas for posting something in your social network!

Yesterday, NPR ran a short story and interview about the use of antibiotics on the farm and how veterinarians are often placed in the middle of conflicting interests.  What do you think of this article?  I have started a discussion at our Linked In page if you care to share your thoughts!

Georgia based, Bailey's Choice Pet Treats, has issued a voluntary recall of their chicken jerky treats after two lots tested positive for Salmonella.  Although this recall and these treats are not related to the on-going FDA concerns about jerky type of treats from China, you can still use both our Chicken Jerky Treat message points and our Salmonella and Pets messaging to help create your media outreach for this story.

Have you seen a story that you think needs to be shared??  Email a link to me and I will make sure it goes into our social media.  From your own blogs to local stories of interest, what is making news in  your area may also be beneficial for your fellow VNN members across the country.
TweetableMedia Outreach and Tweetable Moments

Use these ideas to plan your upcoming marketing and media outreach

Tweetable Moments:

Rabies vaccination is the law for our pets! Don't let your furry friend end up like this poor dog: http://www.delmarvanow.com/article/20131029/WCT/310290050/?nclick_check=1

Rabies in a cow? It's true and that's why all dogs, cats, ferrets and livestock should receive regular rabies vaccinations! Is your pet due?

Foxes, skunks, bats and raccoons are reservoirs for the rabies virus. Don't handle wildlife, especially if the animal looks sick!

High protein in pet foods does not always equal high quality. Ask your veterinarian about the best diet for your dog or cat's specific needs

We agree! Pet Food Marketing is Confusing and Misleading...ask us for advice on what is the best diet for your pet: https://www.myvnn.com/page.asp?id=39&media_type=15&story_id=158

Your pet does not NEED jerky treats! Use baby carrots, green beans or even ice chips as a safe and less expensive alternative.

What vaccines does your cat really need? Let us know your cat's lifestyle (indoor only or outdoor) and we can customize her vaccines

Cancer from a cat vaccine is a concern, but so are rabies, distemper and leukemia. Let us help you find the safe way to protect your feline

Don't forget, there are many older pets waiting for their forever homes at shelters. Nov is Adopt a Senior pet Month @NatlAdoptASeniorPet

Media Outreach

Each week, we spend time in this area discussing WHAT to talk about in the media, but we haven't gone back and talked about HOW to get the media interested in YOU.  So, to help remedy that, here are a few tidbits of advice along with links to some of Dr. Humphries' media training articles (You can find 56 Media Training Articles at MyVNN.com in the Media Training Library).
  •  Know the Media You Are Calling and Keep a Fresh Media Contact List:  Nothing will irritate a producer/editor/reporter more than someone who doesn't understand what type of media they produce.  What's worse is someone who is trying to pitch a story to them, but who obviously doesn't watch their show/segment.  Take time to regularly view/listen to the shows you want to connect with before reaching out to them. (From 11 Ways to Connect with Reporters
  • Develop a Media Kit:  How are you telling your story whenever anyone asks?  Do you have nice pictures of your hospital, a logo that can be shared electronically or testimonials about your practice?  Make sure that these are kept all together and easy to access. (From  How to Get Free Publicity for Your Business)
  • Capture Past Interviews, Columns and Other Media Work for Re-purposing:  In this highly technological and digital age, there are FAR too many outlets for your clients and community to view.  Odds are that even if you are on the highest rated local TV show, many people, including close friends and family, will probably miss your appearance.  Be sure to electronically capture this media work so that it can be shared through your social network or even used to entice other media gatekeepers to take a look at you.  Plus...you can save that media work as your submissions towards becoming a Certified Veterinary Journalist with ASVJ!  (From How To Multiply the Effect of Your Work

Hopefully, these tips and the articles you will find can help you more effectively reach out to your local media.   As always, contact us if you have questions or just need a little advice.

At VNN, we are here, 24/, to help you with your media needs.  Please don't hesitate to contact us whenever you need help!
