child-ghost-costume.jpg Are you ready for the ghosts and goblins to come knocking at your door?  Is your hospital allowing trick or treaters this year or are you doing something community minded on Thursday night?

More to the point, are you sharing what you are doing and reaching out to local media?  Don't let the opportunity for some great publicity pass you by...if you are x-raying candy bags or simply allowing pets to come to your practice in costume, be sure to let others know about it...through social media and sending out press releases!

Animals, Veterinarians and VNN Members in the News

Waggin Train Without a doubt, the main veterinary related story of the week was the recent FDA letter again warning consumers about jerky treats.  The FDA is also asking for pet owners and veterinarians to be more proactive about reporting suspect cases.  As Dr. Jim mentioned on our Linked In Page, is this really news?  After all, we have had reports of these illnesses since 2007!

Even if we don't agree with whether the media is reporting on the true story here, we can take action to help our local community and our clients.  Be proactive about recommendations for "healthier" or "safer" treats.  Consider mentioning to clients that all of Hill's products are made in the US or that instead of relying on packaged treats, use a portion of the pet's food as the treat.  We have updated messaging available at MyVNN.com that will help you connect with the local reporters and prepare material for your social network!  Don't forget, if you are treating one of these cases, let the media know about it!

Various pills In a potential preview of the next big story, Dr. Jim found this interview with a top CDC doctor who says that we have reached the end of the "antibiotic age" and the bacteria are likely to win the war.  We have posted this story for discussion over at Linked In and would love to hear your thoughts!

Rabies makes headlines, but this time it's not wildlife!  In several stories this past week, domestic animals have tested positive for rabies.  First, there was the dog in South Carolina and just yesterday, two new stories broke on cases of rabies in cats from Pennsylvania and in southeastern Colorado.  We have said this on multiple occasions, but you should always be prepared for the media to contact you about this serious subject.  Your calm presence, knowledge and media savvy nature might just win you the next local TV or radio gig!

VNN member, Dr. Krista Gibson in Scottsdale, AZ is starting to be a little bit of an Internet sensation!  She has been seen in multiple videos from the Animal Rescuers with her segments titled "At The Vet"....you can see a recent episode here at YouTube, just skip forward to time frame 13:24!  Dr. Krista is also re-energizing her blog with a recent article on Being a Responsible Pet Owner!

Have you seen a story that you think needs to be shared??  Email a link to me and I will make sure it goes into our social media.  From your own blogs to local stories of interest, what is making news in  your area may also be beneficial for your fellow VNN members across the country.
New and Upcoming at VNN

Hopefully everyone has had an opportunity to review our latest VNN story release, Veterinary Technician Specialists...Extraordinary Partners in Your Pet's Care.  In this article, we look at the extra educational effort put forth by Veterinary Technician Specialists and how they help provide pets and their owners with a higher level of care.  Even thought National Veterinary Technician week is winding down, this is still a great opportunity to share some of the amazing things the technical staff does at all veterinary hospitals.

We would also like to say "WELCOME" and hello to our newest VNN members:

Dr. Michelle Tilghman and her staff at Loving Touch Animal Center...thanks also to Dr. Brian Voynick for his referral of Dr. Tilghman!

Please help us also congratulate the newest Certified Veterinary Journalist with the American Society of Veterinary Journalists...Dr. Brittany Barton of Texas!!

TweetableMedia Outreach and Tweetable Moments

Use these ideas to plan your upcoming marketing and media outreach

Tweetable Moments:

Nov is Adopt a Senior Pet month! Is there room in your home for a pet with lots of experience? Check your local shelters and rescues!

Too often, older pets languish in shelters and rescues for long periods of time.  Consider giving a senior pet his "furever" home during Nov

Natl Animal Shelter Appreciation week is the first week of Nov.  Thanks to our local groups that do so much to help our four legged friends!

Once again, the FDA is warning us about jerky treats for pets.  Don't buy these products if they are not made here in the US!

Worried about the jerky treat concerns? Ask us for alternatives...we have safe treats made here in the US and other ideas to help you!

Want to know more about the jerky treat issue? @LorieAHuston

Halloween may be over, but the candy is probably still here. Please keep pets away from chocolates and other potentially dangerous items

Media Outreach

As Halloween creeps by us, we can start looking forward to November and December and those big holidays.  Despite the lack of any big, recognizable animal related events in these months, there is still a lot to discuss and promote when it comes to our pets.

Of course, holiday safety comes to mind first.  Making sure that pet owners, and others in your community, understand the potential dangers associated with big family holiday meals or even with a wide variety of decorations or decorative plants.

Gift giving is always a big topic too!  Not only can you discuss the merits and pitfalls of giving a pet as a gift at this time of year, but you can also do very well in your media outreach by discussing top gifts for pets or pet lovers.

Finally, don't forget that in many areas, the temperatures are dropping.  Use messaging about the effects that winter and freezing temperatures can have on pets and provide tips for keeping pets safe.

As always, you can find messaging and full stories on these topics at MyVNN.com!

Have a great Halloween!
