It's a beautiful morning here in Indiana, but the cooler temperatures and presence of lots of rain have  generated a lot a new inhabitants for our lawns.  Are your yards inundated with mushrooms?  A veterinarian in Texas discusses the issue
with his local newspaper and provides pet owners with advice.

This fall
occurrence is something that many people eagerly look forward to, but remember that some of these fungi can be problematic for our pets.  Check out our Mushroom Toxicity message points for more details.

Animals, Veterinarians and VNN Members in the News

In a news story that has an underlying message of being careful before you hit the "send" button on your email, Air Canada is getting some bad publicity after a pet escaped from their handlers in California. No word yet if "Larry" has been found.   The additional furor has arisen after a California news station got hold of an email from an Air Canada spokesman that read: "I think I would just ignore, it is local news doing a story on a lost dog. Their entire government is shut down and about to default and this is how the US media spends its time."

Disturbing situation in Pennsylvania...a young pit bull puppy was found under a bridge with his ears already severed.  Thankfully, this pup is under the care of a veterinarian and hopefully will find a new, loving home.  Believe it or not, we have a story that discusses ear cropping in our VNN library!

Good news out of Sacramento, CA... K9 officer, Drago, was shot by a fleeing suspect.  Thankfully, the bullet passed through his chest under the scapula and did not hit any vital organs or vessels.   You can see some great video of Drago and his human partner as he is released from the veterinary hospital.

In a story that is not getting a lot of coverage from national media, tens of thousands of cattle are thought to be dead due to storms that swept acrosss South Dakota earlier this month.  Although the vast majority of our members are small animal veterinarians, we can all feel the pain that the ranchers and veterinarians must be dealing with at this time.

VNN member hospital, Evans East Animal Hospital in Denver, CO had one of their associates, Dr. Erin Casey, on the local ABC affiliate discussing anesthesia free pet dentistry.  Nice job!

Another VNN member, Ms. Linda Case, has started a new blog that I am sure will be a great hit.  The Science Dog will look at evidence based material to help all dog owners understand the difference between what is factual information and what is just myth or conjecture.  Great job, Linda...looking forward to your stuff!

Have you seen a story that you think needs to be shared??  Email a link to me and I will make sure it goes into our social media.  From your own blogs to local stories of interest, what is making news in  your area may also be beneficial for your fellow VNN members across the country.
New and Upcoming at VNN

Hopefully everyone has had an opportunity to review our latest VNN story release, Veterinary Technician Specialists...Extraordinary Partners in Your Pet's Care.  In this article, we look at the extra educational effort put forth by Veterinary Technician Specialists and how they help provide pets and their owners with a higher level of care.  Even thought National Veterinary Technician week is winding down, this is still a great opportunity to share some of the amazing things the technical staff does at all veterinary hospitals.

We would also like to say "WELCOME" and hello to our newest VNN members:

Dr. Randy Aronson of P.A.W.S Veterinary Center in Tucson, AZ

Ms. Michelle Smith of Clairborne Animal Clinic in Homer, LA

Dr. Martha Littlefield of the Louisiana State University College of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Wendy Day of Associated Veterinary Specialists in Baton Rouge, LA

Media Outreach

Great Dane pup with devil horns Halloween is now less than 2 weeks away and I am sure that you are already discussing the potential dangers to pets during this holiday to your clients.  But, what about reaching out into the community?  Is your blog about Halloween pet dangers ready for posting?  Our Halloween message points can be found at this link.

Have you looked at the local newspapers and the weekly shopper papers?  Are you aware of their deadlines and are you prepared to send them some Halloween pet tips?  For some of those print outlets, your deadline might be early this week!  Since everyone seems to focus on the dangers in the candy basket, why not change your pitch and talk about pets and costumes.  Here in Indy, VNN members in the Noah's Animal Hospitals group are taking part in the first ever "ARFPOCALYPSE", an event geared towards setting a record of the most dogs in costume.

Finally, don't forget about your local radio and TV stations?  Find the name of the reporter or producer who focuses on local events or features and send them an email with a news release.  This news release should discuss the possible problems associated with pets eating candy, pets and costumes or the fact that Halloween is just plain scary for a lot of pets, should also provide an action step or two and a reason why you are the best person to deliver this message to their audience.   Need help with the news release?  Just send us an email or review Dr. Jim's great article on Writing Dynamite Press Releases!
