Lots of discussion and news about the government shut-down this week.  Has it affected you or your clients?  With a major storm set to hit the Gulf Coast this weekend, things might get interesting pretty darn quick!

Did you know that Oct 4th is the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals?  There have been lots of stories about local churches performing blessings of pets circulating in the last few days.  Would you consider partnering with a neighborhood church in your area next year for something like this?

Keep up with us daily with postings on our Facebook page, Twitter account and over at Linked In.

Animals, Veterinarians and VNN Members in the News

If you like veterinary dentistry, then you will want to make sure your Twitter skills are up to date!  On Sunday, October 6th, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm Central, veterinary dentists, Dr. Tony Woodard and Dr. Brooke Niemec will be answering questions and providing solid advice LIVE from the AVDC forum in New Orleans!  Log onto Twitter that day and use the hashtag #vetdentistchat to send your questions about equipment, procedures or anything dentistry related!!

And if you are at the AVDC forum...try connecting with Dr. Jim!  He is there and would love to say "hi".   Just give him a call on his cell phone!

If you have been watching social media recently, you have seen this story being shared over this last week.  A veterinarian in Michigan is reporting that she is also seeing dogs that are presenting to her clinic with the same signs as the dogs that were sick in Ohio last month.  As a reminder, there still is NO conclusive evidence (as of today) that the "canine circovirus" is at the root of these issues.

You may remember that VNN has had a long and great friendship with Pets for Patriots, an organization that helps place shelter pets with veterans.  Here's another example of how a VNN member, Dr. Patrick Mahaney, is reaching out and helping another non-profit organization, K9s for Warriors, achieve their goals.  His recent blog discusses the efforts to help this group generate the funds they need to train service dogs for military members with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury.  Thanks for what you are doing, Dr. M!

Pill counter VNN member, Dr. Diane Levitan was quoted in a recent VIN article discussing how some online pet pharmacies are now making automated "recommendations" for prescription drugs based on a client's responses to a survey/questionnaire.   What do you think of this story?  Is this crossing the line or not?

In a recurring story that won't go away, a Canadian station recently sent undercover cameras into area veterinary offices and reported that veterinarians were often "gouging" clients.  Even though this story may be far away from your location, don't be fooled into thinking that the media won't try this in your hometown.  We actually have messaging that addresses the "Cost of Veterinary Care" in our MyVNN library.

CORRECTION:  Last week, a link that was supposed to show VNN member, Dr. Martha Smith-Blackmore incorrectly went to the George Will article on the Medlen case in Texas.  We apologize for this error.  For those members who emailed me and want to see Dr. Smith-Blackmore discussing "Puppy Doe", you can find that interview and story here

Have you seen a story that you think needs to be shared??  Email a link to me and I will make sure it goes into our social media.  From your own blogs to local stories of interest, what is making news in  your area may also be beneficial for your fellow VNN members across the country.
New and Upcoming at VNN

In just over a week, VNN will release another print only story for your media outreach.  Depending on how quickly our sources respond to questions, the print story will focus either on a chemotherapy protocol for pets that is gaining increasing acceptance in veterinary practices or on the amazing work of veterinary technicians who specialize in particular areas.

Dr. Jim is working hard on our next two video stories...one will be a look at the great work being done by the Morris Animal Foundation and their Lifetime Golden Retriever study.  The other story will focus on the growing us of therapy lasers in veterinary practice.  Watch for these stories to round out our 2013 year!

TweetableMedia Outreach and Tweetable Moments

Use these ideas to plan your upcoming marketing and media outreach

Tweetable Moments:

Oct is Natl Pet Wellness Month.  How can we help you make sure your 4 legged friends are safe, healthy and happy?

What does "wellness care" really mean?Proper vaccinations, parasite prevention and weight control can help your pet live longer

Does your pet need all vaccines every year? Absolutely not, but some are needed more frequently than others. Trust us to guide you in this!

It's a fact! Obese or overweight pets live about 2 years LESS than pets at healthy weights. Help your pet lose those excess lbs!

Plump and chubby are just nicer terms for saying your pet is overweight. Let us help them lose some pounds so that they can live longer!

It's getting cooler, but medications to control fleas and prevent heartworms are STILL needed.  Have you given your pets their prevention?

Vomiting and/or diarrhea in pets is a just cause for a call to the DVM. Quick action now may save you heartache later and could save a life!

"Dr. Google" is not a real doctor! Before following Internet advice for your pets, ask us! Your pet's health and safety is our main concern

Many flea products look similar, but there are differences! Using a dog product on a cat can cause a fatal reaction. Ask our advice first!

Media Outreach

As you know, even though National Prevent Pet Obesity is only "observed" on Oct 9th, discussing the problems associated with our chubby pets is something that needs to be on-going.  Why not use the extra media attention this month to do some local outreach yourself?  Use our VNN story, The Silent Epidemic Affecting our Pets, as your resource to educate clients and community.
