Kitten on pumpkins Despite warm temperatures, fall is definitely in the air all round the country!  Take this opportunity to consider how you and your practice can get some much needed publicity by connecting your media contacts with pet concerns in Autumn.

Of course, Halloween is always a great pitch to local media, but have you thought about discussing hunting dog safety?  How about mushroom toxicity or even rodenticide poisonings?   You can find messaging on these topics, and a lot more, in our VNN Message Point Library

Keep up with us daily with postings on our Facebook page, Twitter account and over at Linked In.

Animals, Veterinarians and VNN Members in the News

Boxer puppy in car Our veterinary medications don't always make headlines, but when the drugs can be used in a way that not only saves pets, but also saves the owner money, you can be sure that the media and the blogosphere will share the story.  In an article released by the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012, researchers may have shown that outpatient treatment of puppies suffering from canine parvovirus using Convenia, Maropitant and subcutaneous fluids is almost as effective as inpatient hospitalization of these patients.  This is probably not news to you if you have ever helped an owner who can't afford treatment for parvovirus, but this article is being shared more and more across the Internet.  Be sure you are ready to field possible media calls by reviewing our canine parvovirus messaging.

PIt Bull In Riverside County, CA, officials are considering mandatory neutering of all pit bull type of dogs over the age of 4 months.  As you are aware, this type of legislation is rarely successful in addressing the concerns that prompted the law and has the very real potential for causing owners to avoid the veterinarian.  We have message points on Mandatory Spay Neuter laws available for you at MyVNN.com.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund is asking a Maryland court to uphold a $620,000 verdict for a family whose dog was shot by local law enforcement.  This is another case where "emotional damages" were considered and now the Special Court of Appeals must determine whether or not this is appropriate.  You will recall that recently the Texas State Supreme Court denied emotional damages for a family whose dog was mistakenly euthanized at a shelter.

Our own VNN member, Dr. Martha Smith-Blackmore, did an outstanding job during an interview on an extremely difficult case.  "Puppy Doe" was burnt, stabbed and left to die in Quincy, MA.  Watch her professionalism in this video and learn about what is being done to find the perpetrators!

Thankfully, it's not all bad news this week!  In Olympia, WA, a pitbull braved traffic to try and find someone to help her owner.   The owner of the dog was confined to a wheelchair and had been stabbed in the head and neck.  The police have apprehended the suspect and "Bella" is now staying with the daughter of the victim.

Have you seen a story that you think needs to be shared??  Email a link to me and I will make sure it goes into our social media.  From your own blogs to local stories of interest, what is making news in  your area may also be beneficial for your fellow VNN members across the country.
New and Upcoming at VNN

Dr. Jim is working hard on our next two video stories...one will be a look at the great work being done by the Morris Animal Foundation and their Lifetime Golden Retriever study.  The other story will focus on the growing us of therapy lasers in veterinary practice.  Watch for these stories to round out our 2013 year!

As you all know, we are also passionate advocates in the fight against anesthesia free teeth cleaning for pets.  Dr. Jim noted on our Facebook page this week that our local board certified veterinary dentist had just removed 14 teeth from a dog who had received twice yearly non-anesthetic dental scalings for the last 4 years!!  We have a handout that is available for your use at our MyVNN.com website.  The Dangers of Anesthesia Free Tooth Scraping can be customized and used in your practice!

Congratulations to Charlene Wandzilak, the Executive Director of the PA VMA on her recent wedding!  All of us at VNN hope that YOUR day was great!

TweetableMedia Outreach and Tweetable Moments

Use these ideas to plan your upcoming marketing and media outreach

Tweetable Moments:

Hunting season can be dangerous for you and your pets. If you hike to enjoy the fall colors, be sure both of you are wearing bright orange

Fall often means mice want to find a warm place inside! If you are using any sort of rodent poison, please keep pets away from the bait!

Mouse and rat poisons are very tempting to our pets. Keep the bait away from areas your pets frequent and always save the packaging!

Cooler temps may mean fall is here, but fleas are still a BIG problem.  Ask us about the best way to keep your pets safe from these pests!

Don't let pet parasites become an issue in your home. Keep giving heartworm and flea preventive all year long. Your pets will thank you!

Have room in your home and heart for a new pet? Oct is Natl Adopt a Shelter Dog Month... many are waiting for you and their forever home!

Does your pet enjoy costumes? Not all do, but if your pooch or kitty likes to get dressed up, send us a pic so that we can share!

Oct 10 is Prevent Pet Obesity Day! Let us help you find the right diet and the right plan to help your chubby pup or flabby tabby lose lbs!

Overweight pets are NOT cute and are at risk for many problems. Let us help you help them lose unwanted lbs and get to a healthier state!

Media Outreach

As mentioned above, you have a lot of topics to potentially pitch to your local media or to use as blog topics.  Let Dr. Jim or I know how we can best help you reach out to your community and gain some valuable publicity for your practice!

Don't forget, October 10th is the observance of Prevent Pet Obesity!  Use our VNN story resources to generate interest in this important topic!

At VNN, we are here, 24/, to help you with your media needs.  Please don't hesitate to contact us whenever you need help!
