Barbara Klauber, Editor
The Ministry of the Missioner for Community Engagement  by Deacon Kevin Stewart
The Rev. Kevin Stewart

The words stated by another are sure: The people we serve and partner with may not come into our churches on Sunday but they join us as we serve and minister to one another. This adage provides focus for me as Missioner for Community Engagement, along with providing us guidance and understanding. Community engagement is about developing trusting relationships, identifying possibilities, naming opportunities, and extending invitations to join in faithful service and meaningful ministries. My role is to support you - persons and parishes - of the diocese as you passionately engage and purposely serve your communities.

As for the Milwaukee community, there have been 41 homicides this year (as of May 18) and violence is escalating.  It is against this backdrop that I share with you we are bringing hope, extending help, and offering healing in Milwaukee.  One of those ways is also the fastest growing part of "my work," which is serving as your representative at funerals and at prayer vigils to pray for those who have died, to stand with those who mourn, and to support those who remain with unimaginable loss; unbearable grief.

Thursday, June 2 provides each of us an opportunity to offer support and to participate by wearing orange apparel. As invited by Bishop Miller, I write to you today to ask you to join me and the members of Bishops United in participating in the Wear Orange Movement on Thursday, June 2. More information about this can be found in Episcopal News Service  press release on gun violence.
The Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee offers wide-ranging community engagement resources. I look forward to sharing more about the resources and to working in support of you. Please contact me at 414 345-7971 or [email protected] to let me know how we can best help you.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: a formation program for Children
For several years, St. Bartholomew's has offered the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd as its Sunday School program.  In this article by Shelly Buchan, Director of St. Bartholomew's program,  the program and its goals are explained.
As baptized Christians, God invites us from the time we are very young and throughout our lives to continue to learn about Jesus and the Christian faith. One way of spiritual formation for children is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). CGS, a Montessori-based religious formation program, is dedicated to life-long learning around the celebration of the Word and sacraments, with spiritual formation for the child as its focus, helping them know God personally through Scripture, prayer and Holy Eucharist.
We believe God knows his creation intimately and personally, long before his creation knows and acknowledges him. Since a relationship between God and his creation exists, we begin to know and hear God's voice from a very young age. For this reason, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has a 'first step', inviting the children at the age of three into the atrium (classroom).  continue reading
