Emerging Trends in Transition Ministry
by Peggy Bean, Canon for Parishes
This past week I attended a conference at the Nicholas Center in Chicago with Province V, VI and VII Transition Ministers and we are seeing a trend. Over the past year and half at these gatherings, we have had more churches looking for clergy than clergy seeking a new call. The numbers at this conference were just over 60 congregations looking (for full time or interim) and only just over 20 clergy seeking a new call.

Haiti Project offers discussion of book, Toxic Charity
Haiti Project Coordinator, Heidi Ropa, will lead a discussion on the book Toxic Charity at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church at 6205 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53705 on Wednesday, May 18 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.
Veteran urban activist Robert Lupton reveals the shockingly toxic effects that modern charity has upon the very people meant to benefit from it. Toxic Charity provides proven new models for charitable groups who want to help - not sabotage - those whom they desire to serve.
Can't make it to Madison? Heidi Ropa will al so offer the Toxic Charity discussion at St. Mary's, Dousman on Tuesday, May 24 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.
If you plan to travel with Haiti Project in the next year, we highly recommend you take part in one of these offerings.

Holy Cross, WI Dells members walk to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis research
by Rachel Griffin, member of Holy Cross - WI Dells
|
Team Go Go Jo from WI Dells - Holy Cross
|
The 7th annual Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis was a success due in large part to the continued support of Holy Cross. The praying paid off - no rain during the walk! We stayed dry until the last golfer was off the course and all the tents were down and tables stored. Although the weather kept many at home Saturday morning a crowd of roughly 200 walked, mini-golfed and hit the water park for Cystic Fibrosis. The walk raised some $68,000 for the CF Foundation bringing the 7-year total to over $450,000. The Holy Cross group, officially Team Go Go Jo is on track for a pretty good year too, raising over $15,000 for the foundation. Many thanks to all that volunteered their time and talent helping with registration, photography and coordination.
We could not do it without you. |

New Resource for parishes helps manage historical records
Are you proud of your church, its impact on your community, and what it has done over the course of its existence? Fifty or a hundred years from today, would people be able to find out what it did or why it mattered? The diocesan historiographer, Rev. Evelyn Payson, has prepared a brief handbook for parishes to use in handling their records and memorabilia when they don't have the time or money for complex, state of the art, archival management. It focuses on making it possible for people in the future to find out what our churches have been doing and on keeping information about them from vanishing and becoming lost forever. READ MORE |

Resources sought by Diocesan Anti-Racism Task Force
Call for resources: Last diocesan convention denounced racism and committed to collect resources churches could use towards reconciliation and anti-racism. We would add to build cultural competency, diversity, and inclusion.
Consider...
-trainings
-speakers (local and national)
-social justice networks and organizations (in your area, and national)
-self-evaluation check lists
-websites, blogs
-visual media: animated series, graphic novels, art pieces and installations, info-graphics
-reports and data information (particularly in your area)
-videos, movies
-books, articles, magazines
-age appropriate children's materials to be used in conversations about race and culture
For more information, see resolution 2 HERE.

WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING?
Since 2006 our diocese has allocated 0.7% of the diocesan budget to support work done to achieve the MDGs. Last year, contributions from our diocese were sent to 2 projects that are supported by our diocese:
- The Diocesan Haiti Project : $2400 to initiate a microloan program at St. Marc's parish in Jeannette.
- Companion Diocese of Tanzania: $3614 to contribute toward the construction of a cistern in Newala utilizing collected rainwater from the roof of St. Mary's Cathedral.
In 2016 the MDGs were replaced by the Susutainable Development Goals which extend and build on the achievments of the MDGs. For a list of the SDGs, please see our Letter to Parishes at diomil.org.
It's time again to consider distribution of the 0.7% ($5752 this year) to projects that work toward the achievement of the SDGs. If your parish or a group within your parish is supporting a a project that extends help to "the poorest on earth" you can apply for a grant from the SDG funds.
For more information, please see our Letter to Parishes on the Diocesan website or contact:
