Yankee Bishops:  New book by one of our own, The Rev. Dr. Charles R. Henery
The office of bishop in the Episcopal Church in the United States has long begged attention from historians.Yankee Bishops: Apostles in the New Republic, 1783 to 1873 is the first collective examination of the American episcopate and offers critical insight into the theory and practice of episcopal ministry in these formative years. In this period, one hundred men were elected and consecrated to the episcopal order and exercised oversight. These bishops firmly believed their office to mirror the primitive pattern of apostolic ministry. How this primitive ideal of episcopacy was understood and lived out in the new republic is the main focus of this study. Yankee Bishops is also the first book to scrutinize and analyze as a body the sermons preached at episcopal consecrations.  Yankee Bishops will be a primary source in Anglican and ecumenical studies and of general interest to the reader of American religious and social history.
Charles R. Henery, sometime Professor of Church History and Homiletics and Sub-Dean at Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Nashotah, WI  presently serves as a supply priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee and has recently returned to St. John's Northwestern Military Academy to serve as the interim priest.

Trustees of Funds & Endowments Announce 4.32% Combined Fund Distribution Payout Rate for 2016
At its quarterly board meeting on October 22, 2015 the Trustees of Funds and Endowments established an annual Distribution Payout Rate for calendar year 2016 of 4.32% of the Fair Market Value of The Combined Fund as of December 31, 2015. This compares to a Payout Rate of 3.94% in 2015.

The Payout Rate is calculated on 4.5% of the average fair market value of The Combined Fund for the trailing twenty calendar quarters. The 4.5% calculation rate is based on the distribution policy of the Board and is intended to provide a fair income distribution to investors, protect the principal value of the Fund and to provide for growth in the Fund above the rate of inflation.
Parish Treasurers may use the 4.32% payout rate for budget purposes.
If you have any questions regarding the Distribution Payout Rate, please contact Michael Hagon at  MHagonTFE@wi.rr.com or 414-232-7358.

Icon Workshop at St. Peter's, Ft. Atkinson
(article by Will Smith, parishioner)
In October Saint Peter's, Fort Atkinson have a exceptional Icon workshop with Judy Kaestner, Linda Thomas and Alice Pollack leading us through a meditative process of Icon painting/writing. It was a half day workshop in the Russian/Byzantine tradition. Each year we have an opportunity for our prayer net group to come together for a quiet and contemplative day. This opportunity is not to be missed, we learned so much and had time for quiet meditation and prayer throughout the process of painting the icon, "the Angel with the Golden Hair." I believe that Judy, Linda and Alice would enjoy coming to your parish to provide this wonderful opportunity for you, too. (Ed. Note: Click on the link above to contact the parish)

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Annual Pikipiki Ride Achieves Goal
Perfect weather plus more than 30 cyclists equaled success for the first annual Christ Church Pikipiki Ride that was held Saturday, October 10 at Estabrook Park.
We raised $1090 from the event, enough to buy one motorcycle!  The event featured a 10-mile round-trip ride downtown on the bike path and the Little Piki for the youngsters who covered their 3-mile course with energy to spare.
Created to raise enough funds to buy a motorcycle for the hard working clergy in the Diocese of Newala (rural Tanzania), the first-year event featured a colorful, multi-generational group of riders from ages 4 to 84.  Also riding was the man who helped begin the partner relationship.  When he traveled to Newala many many years ago, Neil Radtke quickly learned that the only way to travel on the rough roads between villages was on his 1960s Honda motorcycle. The locals dubbed his bike a Pikipiki
because of the unique sound it made.
As a result of the event, a new motorcycle will now be purchased for the clergy in Newala. A priest with a motorcycle helps a village spiritually and physically.
A motorcycle becomes an ambulance, a medical supply truck and a delivery vehicle that can help the local economy.
Congrats to all who participated and supported this year's Pikipiki Ride, and we hope to see you in 2016!

"Colonial Worship" at DeKoven Center - NOV. 10
The Rev. Travis DuPriest, a native of Virginia and former director of the DeKoven Center and faculty member at Carthage College, will present an illustrated lecture on "Colonial Worship" on Tuesday, November 10. The program begins at 10:00 a.m. with coffee and refreshments, followed by the presentation at 10:30 a.m. in Taylor Hall on the west side of the DeKoven campus. The Eucharist is celebrated at noon. The event is free of charge, with donations gratefully accepted.
As a special add-on, DeKoven is offering a discounted overnight package with supper on November 9 and and breakfast prior to the gathering and program. The cost of a single room and meals is $75. This "getaway" is ideal for church staff who desire a respite in advance of the busy Advent season--people who are curious about DeKoven but have never stayed there--writers or scholars who need quiet time to read or revise--or anyone who wishes to experience the sacred atmosphere of this historic retreat center, located on the Lake Michigan lakefront in southern Racine. A brief history of DeKoven may be found at: www.dekovencenter.org/about-us .

Book of Remembrance
The Book of Remembrance
Do you know there is a lovely and simple way to remember those women you have died in the Lord's service from your parish?  We have cards that you can fill out about them (birth, death, how they served in the parish,) that when filled out and returned with $10 are lovingly entered in calligraphic script in our Church Women's Book of Remembrance.  This book was begun in 1876, and has the names of many of our sisters, remembered forever.  The donation goes into a special fund, interest from which each year is dispensed by our bishop to those seminarians from our diocese studying for the ordained ministry.
If you need more information, or cards, please
call Meg Haag at 262-538-4455 (St Anskar's, Hartland.)
Madison Area Julian Gathering - NOVEMBER 11th

Madison-Area Julian Gathering
Wednesday, November 11, 7:15 - 9:00 PM
St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church
6205 University Avenue
Madison, WI 53705

You are welcome to attend our November Julian Gathering to learn why Julian is the 'hottest' saint of our time.  We are living in a crisis-driven era, and it's not so easy to believe that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well," as Julian wrote.  How could she have been so positive?
Julian's era was one of turmoil and crisis. Contemporary reports indicate that at least half the population of Norwich died from the Plague; the clergy and undertakers could not keep up with the dead bodies. Meanwhile, disease killed the cattle, and harvests failed. In 1381, when Julian was thirty-nine, people became so desperate they rose up in a revolt, looting the churches and monasteries.
During Julian's lifetime, John Wyclif was also preaching against the corruption in the Church; his translation of the Bible into the common language of English brought down on him papal accusations of heresy. Wyclif and his followers, the Lollards, believed God should be made directly available to ordinary people, without the intercession of the clergy. The clerical hierarchy was so incensed that the Bishop of Norwich received permission from Rome to execute any Lollards he captured. Wyclif's followers were burned alive in a pit less than a mile from Julian's cell.
Meanwhile, the larger world beyond Norfolk and England was also in a state of upheaval. Five years before Julian was born, in 1337, the Hundred Years War between England and France had begun, and it would continue throughout her lifetime. The Great Schism split the Church in 1377, with one pope in France, the other in Rome.
And in the midst of all this, Julian came to believe unshakably that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."
