Alice Mirk addresses Convention
Diocesan Convention update
The Diocese of Milwaukee held its 168th Annual Convention on Saturday, October 17th at the St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin.  We want to thank the academy, its staff and cadets for the hospitality shown to us!  Thanks, too, go to the many volunteers who assisted with the worship services and registration, as well as those who served as tellers.  Convention could not happen without you!
More convention reporting will appear in next week's E-NEWS but for now, please check out the following items, which can also be found on the on the diocesan website's Convention page:
If you attended this year's Convention and did not have an opportunity to fill out your evaluation / feedback form, you may find the form HERE and return it to info@diomil.org or mail to Diocese of Milwaukee Convention, 804 East Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.  Or, you may simply e-mail your comments to info@diomil.org without using the evaluation form.  We know the facility needed to be warmer/better heated, but would appreciate --  and encourage -- additional feedback from Convention deputies and guests on all other aspects of Convention!
Mike Hagon receives Bishop's Shield Award
Mike Hagon was the recipient of the Bishop's Shield Award at this year's Diocesan Convention on October 17, 2015. The award is presented to clergy and / or lay persons who have served the diocese in an exemplary manner, usually over an extended period of time.
Mike is a longtime member of Trinity, Wauwatosa and has served both his parish and the Diocese of Milwaukee in a variety of roles over many years, including several terms as Diocesan Treasurer.  Mike is presently the Executive Director of the Trustees of Funds and Endowments, Inc. (aka The Combined Fund).
For a complete text of the testimonial that was read as part of the award presentation, please click HERE.  The award was made by Bishop Miller at the Eucharist which opened the 168th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Milwaukee.

AODA Substance Abuse Training for Pastors - NOVEMBER 3, 2015
A bit of history: Back in July, 2013 The Center for Christian Counseling, Consultation and Training, Inc. conducted special training for area pastors/Christian leaders on the topic of helping Christian leaders who work with those struggling with an addiction. The feedback from those that attended was extremely positive; therefore we are gearing up for a fall 2015 Pastors' Training on the topic of: Substance Abuse (Alcohol and Drug Addiction) and the Church.

First Annual Pikipiki Ride Achieves Goal
Perfect weather plus more than 30 cyclists equaled success for the first annual Christ Church Pikipiki Ride that was held Saturday, October 10 at Estabrook Park.
We raised $1090 from the event, enough to buy one motorcycle!  The event featured a 10-mile round-trip ride downtown on the bike path and the Little Piki for the youngsters who covered their 3-mile course with energy to spare.
Created to raise enough funds to buy a motorcycle for the hard working clergy in the Diocese of Newala (rural Tanzania), the first-year event featured a colorful, multi-generational group of riders from ages 4 to 84.  Also riding was the man who helped begin the partner relationship.  When he traveled to Newala many many years ago, Neil Radtke quickly learned that the only way to travel on the rough roads between villages was on his 1960s Honda motorcycle. The locals dubbed his bike a Pikipiki
because of the unique sound it made.
As a result of the event, a new motorcycle will now be purchased for the clergy in Newala. A priest with a motorcycle helps a village spiritually and physically.
A motorcycle becomes an ambulance, a medical supply truck and a delivery vehicle that can help the local economy.
Congrats to all who participated and supported this year's Pikipiki Ride, and we hope to see you in 2016!

"Colonial Worship" at DeKoven Center - NOV. 10
The Rev. Travis DuPriest, a native of Virginia and former director of the DeKoven Center and faculty member at Carthage College, will present an illustrated lecture on "Colonial Worship" on Tuesday, November 10. The program begins at 10:00 a.m. with coffee and refreshments, followed by the presentation at 10:30 a.m. in Taylor Hall on the west side of the DeKoven campus. The Eucharist is celebrated at noon. The event is free of charge, with donations gratefully accepted.
As a special add-on, DeKoven is offering a discounted overnight package with supper on November 9 and and breakfast prior to the gathering and program. The cost of a single room and meals is $75. This "getaway" is ideal for church staff who desire a respite in advance of the busy Advent season--people who are curious about DeKoven but have never stayed there--writers or scholars who need quiet time to read or revise--or anyone who wishes to experience the sacred atmosphere of this historic retreat center, located on the Lake Michigan lakefront in southern Racine. A brief history of DeKoven may be found at: www.dekovencenter.org/about-us .

Book of Remembrance
The Book of Remembrance
Do you know there is a lovely and simple way to remember those women you have died in the Lord's service from your parish?  We have cards that you can fill out about them (birth, death, how they served in the parish,) that when filled out and returned with $10 are lovingly entered in calligraphic script in our Church Women's Book of Remembrance.  This book was begun in 1876, and has the names of many of our sisters, remembered forever.  The donation goes into a special fund, interest from which each year is dispensed by our bishop to those seminarians from our diocese studying for the ordained ministry.
If you need more information, or cards, please
call Meg Haag at 262-538-4455 (St Anskar's, Hartland.)
Madison Area Julian Gathering - NOVEMBER 11th

Madison-Area Julian Gathering
Wednesday, November 11, 7:15 - 9:00 PM
St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church
6205 University Avenue
Madison, WI 53705

You are welcome to attend our November Julian Gathering to learn why Julian is the 'hottest' saint of our time.  We are living in a crisis-driven era, and it's not so easy to believe that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well," as Julian wrote.  How could she have been so positive?
Julian's era was one of turmoil and crisis. Contemporary reports indicate that at least half the population of Norwich died from the Plague; the clergy and undertakers could not keep up with the dead bodies. Meanwhile, disease killed the cattle, and harvests failed. In 1381, when Julian was thirty-nine, people became so desperate they rose up in a revolt, looting the churches and monasteries.
During Julian's lifetime, John Wyclif was also preaching against the corruption in the Church; his translation of the Bible into the common language of English brought down on him papal accusations of heresy. Wyclif and his followers, the Lollards, believed God should be made directly available to ordinary people, without the intercession of the clergy. The clerical hierarchy was so incensed that the Bishop of Norwich received permission from Rome to execute any Lollards he captured. Wyclif's followers were burned alive in a pit less than a mile from Julian's cell.
Meanwhile, the larger world beyond Norfolk and England was also in a state of upheaval. Five years before Julian was born, in 1337, the Hundred Years War between England and France had begun, and it would continue throughout her lifetime. The Great Schism split the Church in 1377, with one pope in France, the other in Rome.
And in the midst of all this, Julian came to believe unshakably that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."

The Witch's Chorus
Pipescreams - Concert at St. Matthew's, Kenosha on October 25th
Pipescreams - St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 5900 7th Ave., Kenosha, WI
If you've ever wanted to hear some great organ music from an historic four manual E.M. Skinner organ, this is the event for you!  On Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 5:00 p.m., St. Matthew's will be hosting six organists, 3 from Wisconsin (David Bohn, Sheri Masiakowski and Larry Wheelock) and 3 from Illinois (John Mackey, Steven Potter and Kay Sutton) performing organ selections to get you into the autumn/Halloween spirit (pardon the pun).  Along with the organists, Diana Marie Iorio will be performing on the violin and soprano soloist Krystina Andreoli will delight us with her beautiful voice.
Along with the instrumentalists, there will be a Witch's Chorus who will help the audience with a Pumpkin Carol Sing-Along.  Sounds frightfully fun, don't you think?  A "Cookies in the Crypt" reception follows the event.  A free will offering will be appreciated.
One other small point to take note of:  the Green Bay Packers are not playing that Sunday so please come out to enjoy some ghoulishly wonderful music.  For information, you can contact the church office at (262) 654-8642.
