Seeking to be an Instrument of Christ's Peace: A message from Bishop Miller . . .
|
Bishop Miller marches with fellow bishops at this year's General Convention in a "Bishops United against Gun Violence" rally.
|
Dear Friends in Christ
Monday is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi (transferred). This weekend many of our parishes will hold Pet Blessing services, liturgies which have become increasingly more prominent in my 31 years of ordained ministry. As we thank God for the gift and companionship of our pets, I hope we will also thank God for the privilege of a life and economic standing which makes it possible.
As we remember blessed Francis this year my hope is that we will remember the prayer attributed to him attributed to him which begins Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Yesterday we were again reminded of the violence of our world by the shootings at Umqua Community College in Oregon. The majority of Americans support the adoption of reasonable gun laws that respect the second amendment and allow responsible gun owners to exercise their second amendment rights.
If we are to be instruments of peace the time is now to move from prayer to action. That is why I was among the founders of Bishops United Against Gun Violence. I invite you to join me by writing your legislators and telling them the time for universal fingerprint background checks for all gun purchases is now. This is a proven way to reduce gun violence.
Seeking to be an instrument of Christ's peace,
The Rt. Rev Steven A. Miller

DeKoven Center presents "Beer as a Path to Spirituality"
The DeKoven Center's Second Tuesday Series presents, "Beer as a Path to Spirituality" on Tuesday, October 13th at 10am in St. Mary's Chapel in Taylor Hall. No charge for this event but donations are appreciated. The DeKoven Center is located at 600 - 21st Street, Racine, WI 53402.
This presentation is a natural culmination of Sarah Bussell's education and professional experience. Already bestowed with a culinary degree from Kendall College, she completed her bachelor's degree in Religion & Philosophy from Lake Forest College in 2008 where she focused particularly on Food & Religion. After graduating, she managed and brewed at a local nanobrewery. Bussell's "Beer as a Path to Spirituality" presentation is the result of stirring all those things together in the melting pot of her interests, research and experience. Even non-beer drinkers can appreciate the history of this ancient brew and how it has shaped our civilizations and provided a means to connect with the Earth, our communities, and even our faiths. For more information on this presentation and on the other "Second Tuesday" presentations, call the DeKoven Center at (262)633-6401 or click HERE.

Thinking about attending Diocesan Church Development Institute? Registration is now open!
Our First weekend in Diocesan Church Development Institute is November 7th and 8th. It is a great opportunity for new leaders to learn skills in assessing their context and parish system. A key emphasis is in developing skills to gather data, develop a plan, implement said plan and evaluate. Learning with other parish leaders helps with creativity and gives great support while in the program and after. We do lead this training and Saturday and Sunday intentionally so lay leaders can attend. We have heard over the years how difficult it is for people to take Friday off and this change has helped open the door to leaders who would not be able to attend. One of the other benefits we feel is in how we become a worship community. The Book of Common Prayer is not only a resource but a book we do use every weekend - morning and evening. Join us. Registration will be closed on Oct. 15th. MORE INFORMATION - REGISTRATION INFORMATION Questions? Contact Peggy Bean, Canon for Congregations, at 414-272-3028/ext. 158 or e-mail: Bean@diomil.org .

| St. John's Northwestern Military Academy is the site of the 2015 diocesan convention |
Diocesan Convention 2015 invites you to be part of the convention community
The 168th annual convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee will take place on Saturday, October 17 at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy (SJNMA) in Delafield.
The theme of this year's diocesan convention is:
A Eucharistic People: a community of thanksgiving
"I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart, I will tell of all your wonderful deeds." Psalm 9:1
As we gather in beautiful Noble Victory Memorial Chapel for the 9am opening Eucharist, we hope that many visitors will join us -- you do not have to be a clergy or lay deputy to attend the convention Eucharist! Indeed, visitors are welcomed and invited to participate in as much of convention as they wish (see visitor registration form below). All members of the diocese are encouraged to come and help us celebrate our theme of thanksgiving!
After the Eucharist, there will be a continental breakfast, followed by a presentation on taking our Faith into our communities, focusing on the "I will tell of all your wonderful deeds" part of our convention theme. Speakers will include Jennifer Henery, Ph.D., religious studies instructor at SJNMA, SJNMA cadets, Peggy Bean, Canon for Parishes, and
Alice Mirk, coordinator of our Diocesan Community Connection and parish leader at St. Paul's, Watertown. Coordinator for our Diocesan Community Connection
and parish leader at St. Paul's in Watertown. Not only will you hear stories from the cadets of how outreach opportunities have deepened their faith and their call to mission, you will also hear stories of how a parish community has united a town around a common mission. Our hope is that you will leave Convention with not only a desire but also a way to create a sustainable community connection.
The business meeting takes place after lunch, beginning at 1:30 p.m. with adjournment at 4:30 pm.
The links below will provide further information on convention, including an outline of the schedule, as well as registration forms. Questions? Please contact Barbara Klauber, Administrative Assistant, at the diocesan office at info@diomil.org or (414) 272-3028/ext. 111. She will be happy to help!
