A message from Bishop Miller on the shooting at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina
Dear Friends in Christ, Last night we heard again of another senseless act of violence, a hate crime that resulted in the death of the Rev. Clementa Pickney, pastor of Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and seven members of the congregation. They were shot while they were gathered for bible study and prayer. I ask you to join me with Christians across Wisconsin and the nation in interceding for all those effected by this tragedy by offering this prayer from the Wisconsin Council of Churches. Gracious God, when there is no peace, not even in a house of worship, we pray for the violence in this land and the divisions in our lives. We pray for the grieving at Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. And we lift our prayers for all of our AME brothers and sisters who are weeping this day. We pray in Christ's name. Amen. On Monday, I along with those you have elected as lay and clerical deputies, will travel to Salt Lake City for the 78th General Convention of our Episcopal Church. While I am there, I will be participating in a public witness sponsored by Bishops United against Gun Violence. My hope is that other members of our deputation will join me. The time is now to enact sane gun laws that both protect the rights of law abiding citizens to own firearms and keep them out of the hands of criminals. The best way to do that is through finger print background checks which are proven to reduce "straw man" purchases of weapons. (The purchase of weapons by someone with a clean record for someone who would be prevented from purchasing a weapon.) This is one small thing we can do to reduce the culture of violence in which we find ourselves. There is, of course, so much more. Violence comes from so many places. Feelings of frustration and powerlessness, a desire to dominate, and unresolved anger are just a few of them. Addressing it begins by addressing the seeds of violence that live in each of us and the resolve to not let them germinate and grow. Perhaps now is the time, more than ever, to add to our daily prayers the Prayer of St. Francis, which begins, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace." Yours in the Prince of Peace, our Savior, Jesus Christ. The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller Bishop of Milwaukee |
Rest in Peace . . . The Rev. David Miracle
Word was received today from a family member that The Rev. David Miracle died unexpectedly last night. While not canonically resident in the Diocese of Milwaukee, Fr. Miracle resided here for quite a number of years prior to his death and he was known to many around the diocese. Please keep his family in your prayers at this time of loss.
Funeral arrangements are pending at this time and will be communicated to the clergy and parishes of the diocese as they become available.

Support Fr. Jim Kaestner's bike ride to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis research
Please consider helping The Rev. Jim Kaestner raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis research! For 23 years -- and again this year -- Fr. Kaestner will be riding "The Best Two Day Bike Ride for MS" on August 1st & 2nd. For reasons not fully understood, MS is more prevalent in Wisconsin than in any of the other 49 states; chances are good that someone among your own family members and acquaintances has MS or will have it. Much has been accomplished in the 23 years Fr. Kaestner has been biking for MS research but still more needs to be accomplished.
Donations in honor of Fr. Kaestner's participation in this years Best Two Day Bike Ride for MS maybe sent to:
NATIONAL MS SOCIETY
1120 James Drive - Suite A
Hartland, WI 53029
Phone: (262) 369-4400
Or donate on-line at National MS Society website. THANK YOU!!

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at St. Bartholomew in Pewaukee: First Communion Class
by Jan Watter
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Christian Ministry for children aged 3-12 years that is based on the Bible and liturgy of the church; it is inspired by the principles of Montessori education. This Ministry provides:
- An opportunity for children to fall in love with Jesus, the Good Shepherd, in a child-friendly space called an atrium - located in a church or school.
- Guided play to aid meditation on Bible scripture and the mysteries of the Christian faith once a week - in small groups, facilitated by trained adults (catechists).
- That each child's unique spiritual needs and abilities are respected and nurtured.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
is recognized as a ministry offering religious formation for children by Episcopal and Catholic churches. This is the formation program that is offered at St. Bartholomew in Pewaukee. Recently, a group of children and their parents participated in a special, multi-week class that culminated in their first communion.

Madison area Julian of Norwich Gathering resumes
meeting July 8th (7:15-9:00 pm) at St. Dunstan's
Madison-Area Julian Gathering
Wednesday, July 8, 7:15 - 9:00 PM
St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church
6205 University Avenue
Madison, WI 53705
Julian's era was one of turmoil and crisis. Contemporary reports indicate that at least half the population of Norwich died from the Plague; the clergy and undertakers could not keep up with the dead bodies. Meanwhile, disease killed the cattle, and harvests failed. In 1381, when Julian was thirty-nine, people became so desperate they rose up in a revolt, looting the churches and monasteries.
During Julian's lifetime, John Wyclif was also preaching against the corruption in the Church; his translation of the Bible into the common language of English brought down on him papal accusations of heresy. Wyclif and his followers, the Lollards, believed God should be made directly available to ordinary people, without the intercession of the clergy. The clerical hierarchy was so incensed that the Bishop of Norwich received permission from Rome to execute any Lollards he captured. Wyclif's followers were burned alive in a pit less than a mile from Julian's cell.
Meanwhile, the larger world beyond Norfolk and England was also in a state of upheaval. Five years before Julian was born, in 1337, the Hundred Years War between England and France had begun, and it would continue throughout her lifetime.
The Great Schism split the Church in 1377, with one pope in France, the other in Rome.
And in the midst of all this, Julian came to believe unshakably that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."
