Congratulations to St. Mary's, Dousman
Members of St. Mary's, Dousman burn the mortgage papers!

by Peggy Bean, Canon for Congregations

St. Mary's in Dousman is Debt Free!!  On Sunday, April 12, 2015 the parish burned their two mortgages - one from the Diocese of Milwaukee and one from Associated Bank.  The glorious mortgage burning ceremony was part of the parish's "Celebration Sunday".

Other parishes in the Diocese of Milwaukee are doing quite well too.  St. Bartholomew's in Pewaukee raised $150,000 and with the matching gift from the Diocese they were able to pay down their mortgage by $300,000 leaving them with a balance of $180,000 to start the New Year! St. Aidan's in Hartford were able to pay off a little over $68,000 and with the matching grant; their new balance is $191,160.  If you, too, are working on a capital campaign or are thinking about it, check out this article by Episcopal Church Foundation:

http://www.ecfvp.org/vestrypapers/sharing-our-gifts/lessons-from-fundr

Looking for a spring in your step toward mission or cleaning up debts to  start fresh?  Call Peggy Bean at 414-272-3028 or one of these congregations who are currently involved in a capital campaign: St. Bartholomew's, St. Boniface, St. Aidan's, Good Shepherd, Trinity in Baraboo, Grace, St. Andrew's in Madison.

Rest in Peace, Fr. Al Burkert
A message from The Rev. Andy Jones, Rector of St. Andrew's, Madison
It is with a heavy heart that I write to tell you that Father Al Burkert, long time friend and member of Saint Andrew's died at Agrace Hospice Thursday afternoon, April 16th. Al was surrounded by his family who said the Prayers at the Time of Death over him as he passed more fully into the presence of God. There will be a visitation with the family in the Nave at Saint Andrew's Madison on Friday April 24th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.  Prayers will be said to conclude that visitation at 7:30 p.m. A Requiem Mass will be said and Father Al will be buried at Nashotah House on Saturday April 25th.  The Mass, which will be held at 11:00 a.m., will be followed by a luncheon in the Nashotah House Refectory.  Interment will follow the luncheon.

Almighty God, grant that, increasing in knowledge and love of thee, your faithful servant Al may go from strength to strength in the life of perfect service in thy heavenly kingdom.  Amen     (BCP p. 481)

Milwaukee Chamber Choir Taking Flight Sunday, April 26th at 2:30 p.m.

The Milwaukee Chamber Choir returns to All Saints' Cathedral on April 26th at 2:30 pm for a concert that features two works dealing with flight: Eric Whitacre's "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine" and Ralph Vaughan Williams's rarely heard 1956 masterpiece "A Vision of Aeroplanes." Madrigals of the Elizabethan era and anthems from the Anglican cathedral tradition round out the program. Christopher Berry, director of music at the Basilica of St. Josaphat, will be our guest organist.

"A Vision of Aeroplanes," is a highly imaginative setting of the first chapter of Ezekiel ("I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the north..."). Whitacre's "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine," scored for unaccompanied choir, is a large-scale madrigal that effectively imagines da Vinci building an airplane and taking it for a test flight.

Beloved anthems by Edward Elgar, Herbert Howells, Benjamin Britten, and William Mathias ("Let the People Praise Thee, O God," written for the 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana) open the second half of the program.

There is no admission charge and seating is first come, first serve.  All Saints' Cathedral is located at 818 East Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.

All Saints' Cathedral Choral Scholars Benefit Concert

The All Saints' Cathedral Choral Scholar's Benefit Concert takes place on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. followed by a reception. The Cathedral is located at 818 E. Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.

This year's Choral Scholar Benefit will feature three organ chorales by Csar Franck, as well as choral works by John Taverner, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and more.

All proceeds from the concert help fund our Choral Scholars Program. Each year, the Cathedral offers monetary scholarships to high school, college and seminary students. In return, these young people receive musical training and an exposure to Anglican choral tradition that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Come enjoy the magnificent sounds while supporting this important scholarship program and music ministry of All Saints' Cathedral!

Tickets: $30 adult / $15 seniors and students.  To order tickets or inquire about sponsorship opportunities, call Cathedral Office: (414) 271-7719.  more info

Good Shepherd, Sun Prairie supports wider community by hosting Sunshine Ball May 1st

Spring is here! That means it's time again for Good Shepherd's largest outreach program to benefit Sunshine Place, who serves the entire Sun Prairie area as a food pantry, provides beds for needy families, provides kids clothing, provides food home with students from school on Fridays (so they know they have food to eat throughout the weekend), helps those who are job-hunting to write resumes and locate jobs.. . that's just the tip of the ice berg! But they are 100% donor funded, and dependent on the community to support them, and is why we focus to support them!  Our annual "Sunshine Ball" will be held on Friday, May 1 from 6-10:30 at The Oaks Golf Course at 4740 Pierceville Rd, Cottage Grove, WI  53527. Tickets are available online at www.sunshineplace.org (under Sunshine Ball), or call Good Shepherd office at 608-837-3308 and make arrangements to order before April 15.  Alternatively you may send an email to GSECcommunity@gmail.com (fundraising email address) and we will be in touch.

Its not "just a ball"!  The evening begins with softly played dinner music (violin and piano) as you snack on butlered appetizers and check over and bid on the many silent auction tables. This year we have many unique and awesome items! At 7 PM we seat you for a gourmet prepared dinner, as dinner music continues in the background. After you make a few stops at the dessert and coffee bar, its time to swing yourself around the dance floor as you dance to the award winning Sun Prairie HIgh School Jazz band, who are well known all the way to New York for their fine musical skills! Also a wine pull, and of course, the raffle of a stunning one of a kind yellow sapphire and diamond pendant and necklace, valued over $5200. Raffle tickets are available at B's Jewelers and Sunshine Place in Sun Prairie for $15 each, or 4/$50.  Or call Good Shepherd at 608-837-3308, or email the fundraising email address at GSECcommunity@gmail.com

and we will work with you to get you what you need! Thank you for your prayers, support and attendance!

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land planned for 2016

The Rev. Debra Trakel, Rector of St. Christopher's in River Hills, is going to take a group of folks on pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel) next February (2/15-2/24)  We will see the land where Christianity began and explore Jesus' Jewish world.  Estimated costs, air inclusive, are $3,050-$3,300.  The price depends upon how many people choose to go.  The cost includes the on site tour guide, two meals a day, transfers to and from the airport in Israel, and more.  Debra has been working with a professional Israeli travel agent to craft a tour.  She has already been to Israel twice and knows what kind of pace she'd like, and what she wants to be sure people get to see and experience.  We will go on pilgrimage to pray in the places where Jesus prayed, and worship where He worshipped.

If you are interested in this possibility, please talk to Debra soon so that she can save you a space and give you more information.  revdebra@aol.com  414-339-9266 (cell)

Disaster Program Training Available

Free training will be provided by the Episcopal Relief & Development's U.S. Disaster Program in Racine at the DeKoven Center April 20 - 23.  The U.S. Disaster Program tries to better equip dioceses to prepare for and respond to disasters.  The Program has trained diocesan disaster coordinators and team members in more than 70 dioceses since the initiative began in 2011.  At this time the Diocese of Milwaukee has a Diocesan Disaster Coordinator but the program has yet to really get off the ground.  Here is a little bit of back ground information.

Disasters happen.  We don't want them but they still happen.  They may be natural disasters such as tornados or floods or they may be man made such as acts of terrorism.  Disasters may destroy our church building, affect parish members where they live, or devastate an entire community.  People and organizations who have thought about disaster preparedness respond better than those caught unaware.  The U.S. Disaster Program promotes education and disaster preparedness.

The Program responds to disasters starting on the parish level.  Could a church be open in the middle of the night to shelter people homeless due to a flood?  Even the smallest parish might be able to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people with nothing to eat.  The Diocesan Disaster Coordinator or Team can respond to and assist the parish in their efforts.  National staff can respond to large scale events.

Recovery may be a long term process depending on the disaster.  Some areas affected by Hurricane Sandy are still in recovery.  The U.S. Disaster Program assists with the recovery process including financial support.

Does this program sound interesting?  Are you interested in learning more?  Please note that both clergy and lay persons are equally welcome to serve as both Diocesan Disaster coordinators and team members.  Consider attending the training in April.  For further information you may contact the Diocesan Disaster Coordinator, Bob Heindl, at bobmkeff@aol.com or 414-421-0990.

Bob is also available to meet with individual parishes to discuss disaster preparednes.
