A Sermon preached on Maundy Thursday by The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller, Bishop of Milwaukee
By this shall the world know that you are my disciples that you have love for one another.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
I need to tell you that I find myself particularly uneasy and uncomfortable this Maundy Thursday. I am also beginning to think that this is the way this night is supposed to make us feel. Maundy Thursday more than any other day is day in tension, a day on the edge at least for the first part of it. continue reading . . .

Prayers for Healing . . . Prayers of Thanksgiving Joy juxtaposes with sadness and concern at Christ Church, Whitefish Bay this week. Monday, the parish learned that their longtime and much loved parish administrator, Bob Staeck, is seriously ill with pancreatic cancer. On Wednesday came the joyous news that a daughter, Hannah Lee, had been born to Elizabeth Raymond and her husband, The Rev. Seth Raymond, who serves as assistant to the rector at Christ Church. Please hold Bob, the Raymonds, and all the Christ Church family in your prayers! Because the parish office is seriously taxed without Bob Staeck's presence, please do not call or e-mail Christ Church with messages for the Raymonds or Bob himself; instead, please send a card or letter to them c/o the parish and they will be delivered on a regular basis. The address is:
Christ Episcopal Church
5655 North Lake Drive
Whitefish Bay, WI 53217
Updates on Bob Staeck's progress are available on his Caring Bridge site by clicking HERE. The Rev. Seth Dietrich, rector of Christ Church, reports that when he visited Bob in the hospital on Thursday, he was good spirits and feeling hopeful. May he continue to be buoyed up by the love and prayers that surround him!

Please hold The Rev. Al Burkert, his wife Irene, their daughters Monica and Missy, and their family in your prayers. Fr. Al, who has served this diocese as the Chaplain at St. John's on the Lake, as an interim and Priest Associate at Saint Andrew's Madison, as Priest in Charge at Saint Andrew's Monroe, and as a Chaplain at the VA Hospital in Madison, has been admitted to the Agrace Hospice Center in Madison.
Al is approaching the end of a long and faithful journey with Christ as a priest of the church. His family has asked for our prayers.

AROUND THE DIOCESE OF MILWAUKEE
Milwaukee Chamber Choir Taking Flight Sunday, April 26th at 2:30 p.m.
The Milwaukee Chamber Choir returns to All Saints' Cathedral on April 26th at 2:30 pm for a concert that features two works dealing with flight: Eric Whitacre's "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine" and Ralph Vaughan Williams's rarely heard 1956 masterpiece "A Vision of Aeroplanes." Madrigals of the Elizabethan era and anthems from the Anglican cathedral tradition round out the program. Christopher Berry, director of music at the Basilica of St. Josaphat, will be our guest organist.
"A Vision of Aeroplanes," is a highly imaginative setting of the first chapter of Ezekiel ("I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the north..."). Whitacre's "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine," scored for unaccompanied choir, is a large-scale madrigal that effectively imagines da Vinci building an airplane and taking it for a test flight.
Beloved anthems by Edward Elgar, Herbert Howells, Benjamin Britten, and William Mathias ("Let the People Praise Thee, O God," written for the 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana) open the second half of the program.
There is no admission charge and seating is first come, first serve. All Saints' Cathedral is located at 818 East Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.

Program on Role of Religion in U.S. Civil War presented April 16 at 7:30 pm at St. Paul's, Milwaukee
As the United States approaches the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, St. Paul's, Milwaukee Educational Outreach presents, "Why Religion and Faith Mattered: Religion is What Makes Soldiers Brave" on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7:30 pm. The event takes place at St. Paul's, which is located at 914 East Knapp Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202
An extremely devout country went to war in 1861; yet the most ignored topic of Civil War studyis the role that religion and faith played in it. Before, during and after the War, religion and faith had a deep, pervasive influence on politicians, soldiers and civilians alike. Fr. Robert J. Miller, Roman Catholic Priest and author of "Both Prayed to the Same God: Religion, Faith and the Civil War" will consider seven reasons why religion and faith's role was critical in justifying, supporting and promoting nearly every aspect of our Civil War. For more information see POSTER.

Good Shepherd, Sun Prairie supports wider community by hosting Sunshine Ball
Spring is here! That means it's time again for Good Shepherd's largest outreach program to benefit Sunshine Place, who serves the entire Sun Prairie area as a food pantry, provides beds for needy families, provides kids clothing, provides food home with students from school on Fridays (so they know they have food to eat throughout the weekend), helps those who are job-hunting to write resumes and locate jobs.. . that's just the tip of the ice berg! But they are 100% donor funded, and dependent on the community to support them, and is why we focus to support them! Our annual "Sunshine Ball" will be held on Friday, May 1 from 6-10:30 at The Oaks Golf Course at 4740 Pierceville Rd, Cottage Grove, WI 53527. Tickets are available online at www.sunshineplace.org (under Sunshine Ball), or call Good Shepherd office at 608-837-3308 and make arrangements to order before April 15. Alternatively you may send an email to GSECcommunity@gmail.com (fundraising email address) and we will be in touch.
Its not "just a ball"! The evening begins with softly played dinner music (violin and piano) as you snack on butlered appetizers and check over and bid on the many silent auction tables. This year we have many unique and awesome items! At 7 PM we seat you for a gourmet prepared dinner, as dinner music continues in the background. After you make a few stops at the dessert and coffee bar, its time to swing yourself around the dance floor as you dance to the award winning Sun Prairie HIgh School Jazz band, who are well known all the way to New York for their fine musical skills! Also a wine pull, and of course, the raffle of a stunning one of a kind yellow sapphire and diamond pendant and necklace, valued over $5200. Raffle tickets are available at B's Jewelers and Sunshine Place in Sun Prairie for $15 each, or 4/$50. Or call Good Shepherd at 608-837-3308, or email the fundraising email address at GSECcommunity@gmail.com
and we will work with you to get you what you need! Thank you for your prayers, support and attendance!

Ed. Note: This article was written by Shirley Foerster of Good Shepherd, Sun Prairie. The parish's hosting of the Sunshine Ball grew out of a project originally focused more on supporting the parish rather than the community at large. It was developed through Good Shepherd's involvement with CDI (Church Development Institute). bjk

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land planned for 2016
The Rev. Debra Trakel, Rector of St. Christopher's in River Hills, is going to take a group of folks on pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel) next February (2/15-2/24) We will see the land where Christianity began and explore Jesus' Jewish world. Estimated costs, air inclusive, are $3,050-$3,300. The price depends upon how many people choose to go. The cost includes the on site tour guide, two meals a day, transfers to and from the airport in Israel, and more. Debra has been working with a professional Israeli travel agent to craft a tour. She has already been to Israel twice and knows what kind of pace she'd like, and what she wants to be sure people get to see and experience. We will go on pilgrimage to pray in the places where Jesus prayed, and worship where He worshipped.
If you are interested in this possibility, please talk to Debra soon so that she can save you a space and give you more information. revdebra@aol.com 414-339-9266 (cell)

April 12 - St. Luke's, Racine
O God, who called your servant Luke to be a healer and to proclaim your gospel to all people: We give you thanks for the ministry of St. Luke's parish in Racine. Send your Holy Spirit to guide them; help them to know where you are calling them to serve your people; give them grace to proclaim to the good news, both in word and deed; and raise up leaders among them to continue the mission to which you have called them. This we ask through your Son Jesus Christ, the healer of all souls. Amen.
Note: The Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, compiled by the Order of Julian of Norwich, which includes both Diocese of Milwaukee and Diocese of Newala parishes and ministries, is also posted on the diocesan website, along with the Commission on Mission and Development's "Prayers for the Parishes of the Diocese of Milwaukee". Disaster Program Training Available
Free training will be provided by the Episcopal Relief & Development's U.S. Disaster Program in Racine at the DeKoven Center April 20 - 23. The U.S. Disaster Program tries to better equip dioceses to prepare for and respond to disasters. The Program has trained diocesan disaster coordinators and team members in more than 70 dioceses since the initiative began in 2011. At this time the Diocese of Milwaukee has a Diocesan Disaster Coordinator but the program has yet to really get off the ground. Here is a little bit of back ground information.
Disasters happen. We don't want them but they still happen. They may be natural disasters such as tornados or floods or they may be man made such as acts of terrorism. Disasters may destroy our church building, affect parish members where they live, or devastate an entire community. People and organizations who have thought about disaster preparedness respond better than those caught unaware. The U.S. Disaster Program promotes education and disaster preparedness.
The Program responds to disasters starting on the parish level. Could a church be open in the middle of the night to shelter people homeless due to a flood? Even the smallest parish might be able to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people with nothing to eat. The Diocesan Disaster Coordinator or Team can respond to and assist the parish in their efforts. National staff can respond to large scale events.
Recovery may be a long term process depending on the disaster. Some areas affected by Hurricane Sandy are still in recovery. The U.S. Disaster Program assists with the recovery process including financial support.
Does this program sound interesting? Are you interested in learning more? Please note that both clergy and lay persons are equally welcome to serve as both Diocesan Disaster coordinators and team members. Consider attending the training in April. For further information you may contact the Diocesan Disaster Coordinator, Bob Heindl, at bobmkeff@aol.com or 414-421-0990.
Bob is also available to meet with individual parishes to discuss disaster preparednes.
