Diocesan Clergy gather for the Chrismal Mass
Clergy of the diocese gathered for the traditional Chrismal Mass on Holy Tuesday (March 31).  The Chrismal Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's, Dousman this year, with Bishop Miller presiding.  Following the service, clergy had an opportunity to replenish their supply of the holy oils (chrism) used for such purposes as anointing the sick and baptism.

Click HERE to see more photos, which were kindly provided by The Rev. Karen Buker and Peggy Bean, Canon for Congregations.
Happy 49th anniversary, Fr. Bill McLemore
Fr. Bill McLemore, Supply Priest at the Church of the Holy Communion, Lake Geneva, surprised the congregation by announcing the day was his 49th anniversary of ordination as a priest in the Episcopal Church.  He was ordained April 1, 1966 in Christ Church, Cedar Key, Florida, by Bishop Hamilton West, the diocesan at the time.  He used Rite I for the celebration as he was ordained with the 1928 Prayer Book.  After the service, those present gathered for a photo (below)

Canon Peggy Bean
Some Comments on the report,
New Facts on Episcopal Church Growth and Decline

by Canon Peggy Bean, Canon for Congregations

NOTE:  Click HERE to access the new report on the results of the 2014 survey of Episcopal  congregations, conducted in conjunction with the Faith Communities Today (FACT) ecumenical/interfaith survey project.
NOTE: There were problems with the above link when this article first ran last week - we believe it will work now if you will give it another try . . . thanks!

What do the numbers really mean?  I encourage you to read this report and think about your own numbers and trends regarding growth and decline.  What are the numbers saying and what are they missing? Hopefully they start the conversation on this important subject, rather than ending it.

In talking about what is going on in your church and how you are living into your mission, be sure to ask how you are being a good neighbor?  Do you know what is changing in the neighborhood?  So many of our churches talk about how people drive in to church and that is great but I also challenge you to look at what it would mean to be a neighborhood church.  Would it look the same?

These conversations are great for the vestry to have while addressing  mission and looking at how connected the congregation is to the wider world, community and neighborhood.  I encourage you to keep records of Worship on Sunday AND how the building and grounds are being used during the week AND what activities, events, teachings etc. the congregation is involved in away from the building.  What are these numbers and trends telling you about:

  • church and the community
  • people and the community
  • people and the church

Good Shepherd, Sun Prairie supports wider community by hosting Sunshine Ball

Spring is here! That means it's time again for Good Shepherd's largest outreach program to benefit Sunshine Place, who serves the entire Sun Prairie area as a food pantry, provides beds for needy families, provides kids clothing, provides food home with students from school on Fridays (so they know they have food to eat throughout the weekend), helps those who are job-hunting to write resumes and locate jobs.. . that's just the tip of the ice berg! But they are 100% donor funded, and dependent on the community to support them, and is why we focus to support them!  Our annual "Sunshine Ball" will be held on Friday, May 1 from 6-10:30 at The Oaks Golf Course at 4740 Pierceville Rd, Cottage Grove, WI  53527. Tickets are available online at www.sunshineplace.org (under Sunshine Ball), or call Good Shepherd office at 608-837-3308 and make arrangements to order before April 15.  Alternatively you may send an email to GSECcommunity@gmail.com (fundraising email address) and we will be in touch.

Its not "just a ball"!  The evening begins with softly played dinner music (violin and piano) as you snack on butlered appetizers and check over and bid on the many silent auction tables. This year we have many unique and awesome items! At 7 PM we seat you for a gourmet prepared dinner, as dinner music continues in the background. After you make a few stops at the dessert and coffee bar, its time to swing yourself around the dance floor as you dance to the award winning Sun Prairie HIgh School Jazz band, who are well known all the way to New York for their fine musical skills! Also a wine pull, and of course, the raffle of a stunning one of a kind yellow sapphire and diamond pendant and necklace, valued over $5200. Raffle tickets are available at B's Jewelers and Sunshine Place in Sun Prairie for $15 each, or 4/$50.  Or call Good Shepherd at 608-837-3308, or email the fundraising email address at GSECcommunity@gmail.com

and we will work with you to get you what you need! Thank you for your prayers, support and attendance!

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land planned for 2016

The Rev. Debra Trakel, Rector of St. Christopher's in River Hills, is going to take a group of folks on pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel) next February (2/15-2/24)  We will see the land where Christianity began and explore Jesus' Jewish world.  Estimated costs, air inclusive, are $3,050-$3,300.  The price depends upon how many people choose to go.  The cost includes the on site tour guide, two meals a day, transfers to and from the airport in Israel, and more.  Debra has been working with a professional Israeli travel agent to craft a tour.  She has already been to Israel twice and knows what kind of pace she'd like, and what she wants to be sure people get to see and experience.  We will go on pilgrimage to pray in the places where Jesus prayed, and worship where He worshipped.

If you are interested in this possibility, please talk to Debra soon so that she can save you a space and give you more information.  revdebra@aol.com  414-339-9266 (cell)

Program on Role of Religion in U.S. Civil War presented April 16  at 7:30 pm at St. Paul's, Milwaukee

As the United States approaches the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, St. Paul's, Milwaukee Educational Outreach presents, "Why Religion and Faith Mattered: Religion is What Makes Soldiers Brave" on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7:30 pm.  The event takes place at St. Paul's, which is located at 914 East Knapp Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202

An extremely devout country went to war in 1861; yet the most ignored topic of Civil War studyis the role that religion and faith played in it. Before, during and after the War, religion and faith had a deep, pervasive influence on politicians, soldiers and civilians alike. Fr. Robert J. Miller, Roman Catholic Priest and author of "Both Prayed to the Same God: Religion, Faith and the Civil War" will consider seven reasons why religion and faith's role was critical in justifying, supporting and promoting nearly every aspect of our Civil War.  For more information see POSTER.

THEOLOGY PUB
Sponsored by St. Mark's, Milwaukee

Theology Pub, a St. Mark's program, met on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the usual place, Paddy's Pub, due to St. Patrick's Day being on the 3rd Tuesday in March, when Paddy's special room was not available.

Theology Pub will be returning to the "3rd Tuesday" (6:00 - 7:30 pm) regular meeting evening in April.

Deacon Michelle Mooney of St. Mark's sends the following report on the first months of Theology Pub:

"The evenings have been just great! What better place to talk about church and theology than a nice cozy pub. We have served pizza or Mexican snack food for all and it's really been a hit. Our response continues to be active and a good mix of St. Mark's folks and new friends from the neighborhood. The time of the event remains 6-7:30pm".

Disaster Program Training Available

Free training will be provided by the Episcopal Relief & Development's U.S. Disaster Program in Racine at the DeKoven Center April 20 - 23.  The U.S. Disaster Program tries to better equip dioceses to prepare for and respond to disasters.  The Program has trained diocesan disaster coordinators and team members in more than 70 dioceses since the initiative began in 2011.  At this time the Diocese of Milwaukee has a Diocesan Disaster Coordinator but the program has yet to really get off the ground.  Here is a little bit of back ground information.

Disasters happen.  We don't want them but they still happen.  They may be natural disasters such as tornados or floods or they may be man made such as acts of terrorism.  Disasters may destroy our church building, affect parish members where they live, or devastate an entire community.  People and organizations who have thought about disaster preparedness respond better than those caught unaware.  The U.S. Disaster Program promotes education and disaster preparedness.

The Program responds to disasters starting on the parish level.  Could a church be open in the middle of the night to shelter people homeless due to a flood?  Even the smallest parish might be able to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people with nothing to eat.  The Diocesan Disaster Coordinator or Team can respond to and assist the parish in their efforts.  National staff can respond to large scale events.

Recovery may be a long term process depending on the disaster.  Some areas affected by Hurricane Sandy are still in recovery.  The U.S. Disaster Program assists with the recovery process including financial support.

Does this program sound interesting?  Are you interested in learning more?  Please note that both clergy and lay persons are equally welcome to serve as both Diocesan Disaster coordinators and team members.  Consider attending the training in April.  For further information you may contact the Diocesan Disaster Coordinator, Bob Heindl, at bobmkeff@aol.com or 414-421-0990.

Bob is also available to meet with individual parishes to discuss disaster preparednes.

April 05 - Holy Cross, Wisconsin Dells

Loving God, we pray for the people of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wisconsin Dells. Grant them grace and courage to live into their mission of following Christ's teachings, growing spiritually, and serving the needs of their neighbors.  Help them to develop and deepen partnerships and walk with them on every road, familiar or new. Guide, guard, and strengthen them as your people. We pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Note:  The Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, compiled by the Order of Julian of Norwich, which includes both Diocese of Milwaukee and Diocese of Newala parishes and ministries, is also posted on the diocesan website, along with the Commission on Mission and Development's "Prayers for the Parishes of the Diocese of Milwaukee".  Parishes are encouraged to make use of both these resources in their weekly prayers and Services.
