Holy Week
A message from Bishop Miller

Dear Friends in Christ,

"Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy before he suffered pain and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord."

This prayer, appointed for Monday in Holy Week and Fridays throughout the year, clearly sums up the invitation of Holy Week. We are offered the opportunity in the liturgies of Palm Sunday and the triduum to walk in the way of the cross and discover anew that it is the way of life. These are the most ancient and moving liturgies of the year. In these liturgies, particularly the reading of the Passion-- the story of Jesus' agony, trial, death and burial which we have been studying as a diocesan family this year, we are invited to look again at ourselves and God's love for us.

As you hear the passion read this Palm Sunday and Good Friday, I invite you to see yourself in the story. For many of us it is easy for us to see ourselves in the actions of the disciples who abandoned Jesus, or Peter who denied him. Most of us have known times like these. For many of us it is not much of a stretch to see ourselves in the crowd. We know times when we to have succumbed to going along with crowd or been stirred up with false indignation. This year we hear Mark's Gospel on Palm Sunday. The portrait of Jesus that Mark paints is of a Jesus who is misunderstood, abandoned, and alone. I suspect we can see ourselves in Jesus, too. That is the richness and the wonder of the Gospel story.

As your bishop, I write to encourage you to make every effort to participate fully in the worship of this Holy Week. I know you will be blessed if you do.

The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller

Bishop of Milwaukee

Canon Peggy Bean
Some Comments on the report,
New Facts on Episcopal Church Growth and Decline

by Canon Peggy Bean, Canon for Congregations

NOTE:  Click HERE to access the new report on the results of the 2014 survey of Episcopal  congregations, conducted in conjunction with the Faith Communities Today (FACT) ecumenical/interfaith survey project.

What do the numbers really mean?  I encourage you to read this report and think about your own numbers and trends regarding growth and decline.  What are the numbers saying and what are they missing? Hopefully they start the conversation on this important subject, rather than ending it.

In talking about what is going on in your church and how you are living into your mission, be sure to ask how you are being a good neighbor?  Do you know what is changing in the neighborhood?  So many of our churches talk about how people drive in to church and that is great but I also challenge you to look at what it would mean to be a neighborhood church.  Would it look the same?

These conversations are great for the vestry to have while addressing  mission and looking at how connected the congregation is to the wider world, community and neighborhood.  I encourage you to keep records of Worship on Sunday AND how the building and grounds are being used during the week AND what activities, events, teachings etc. the congregation is involved in away from the building.  What are these numbers and trends telling you about:

  • church and the community
  • people and the community
  • people and the church

Children of Holy Cross, WI Dells "Say it with Pancakes"!

The children of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wisconsin Dells, say it with pancakes to give a warm welcome and bid a fond goodbye to a group of international students living and working in the community. For many of these students it was their first day in the United States and for others, their last.

Wisconsin Dells employs many international students from around the globe. It is an opportunity for them and us to experience another culture. Often though, the young people arrive with little or no money for necessities including food. The children of Holy Cross welcomed a group of students by serving dinner and then pitched in and packaged meals to be delivered to others unable to attend. Great fun and fellowship - and unexpected kisses - were had by all.

Right of parishes to maintain a columbarium on church grounds challenged in Wisconsin
Your  help is needed!  Please take a few moments to read the attached letter from Bishop Miller and Dean Kevin Carroll of All Saints' Cathedral; it summarizes the ongoing columbarium controversy in Wisconsin and outlines what you can do to help preserve the right of parishes to install and maintain a columbarium on church property.

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land planned for 2016

The Rev. Debra Trakel, Rector of St. Christopher's in River Hills, is going to take a group of folks on pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel) next February (2/15-2/24)  We will see the land where Christianity began and explore Jesus' Jewish world.  Estimated costs, air inclusive, are $3,050-$3,300.  The price depends upon how many people choose to go.  The cost includes the on site tour guide, two meals a day, transfers to and from the airport in Israel, and more.  Debra has been working with a professional Israeli travel agent to craft a tour.  She has already been to Israel twice and knows what kind of pace she'd like, and what she wants to be sure people get to see and experience.  We will go on pilgrimage to pray in the places where Jesus prayed, and worship where He worshipped.

If you are interested in this possibility, please talk to Debra soon so that she can save you a space and give you more information.  revdebra@aol.com  414-339-9266 (cell)

Program on Role of Religion in U.S. Civil War presented April 16  at 7:30 pm at St. Paul's, Milwaukee

As the United States approaches the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, St. Paul's, Milwaukee Educational Outreach presents, "Why Religion and Faith Mattered: Religion is What Makes Soldiers Brave" on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7:30 pm.  The event takes place at St. Paul's, which is located at 914 East Knapp Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202

An extremely devout country went to war in 1861; yet the most ignored topic of Civil War studyis the role that religion and faith played in it. Before, during and after the War, religion and faith had a deep, pervasive influence on politicians, soldiers and civilians alike. Fr. Robert J. Miller, Roman Catholic Priest and author of "Both Prayed to the Same God: Religion, Faith and the Civil War" will consider seven reasons why religion and faith's role was critical in justifying, supporting and promoting nearly every aspect of our Civil War.  For more information see POSTER.

THEOLOGY PUB
Sponsored by St. Mark's, Milwaukee

Disaster Program Training Available

Free training will be provided by the Episcopal Relief & Development's U.S. Disaster Program in Racine at the DeKoven Center April 20 - 23.  The U.S. Disaster Program tries to better equip dioceses to prepare for and respond to disasters.  The Program has trained diocesan disaster coordinators and team members in more than 70 dioceses since the initiative began in 2011.  At this time the Diocese of Milwaukee has a Diocesan Disaster Coordinator but the program has yet to really get off the ground.  Here is a little bit of back ground information.

Disasters happen.  We don't want them but they still happen.  They may be natural disasters such as tornados or floods or they may be man made such as acts of terrorism.  Disasters may destroy our church building, affect parish members where they live, or devastate an entire community.  People and organizations who have thought about disaster preparedness respond better than those caught unaware.  The U.S. Disaster Program promotes education and disaster preparedness.

The Program responds to disasters starting on the parish level.  Could a church be open in the middle of the night to shelter people homeless due to a flood?  Even the smallest parish might be able to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people with nothing to eat.  The Diocesan Disaster Coordinator or Team can respond to and assist the parish in their efforts.  National staff can respond to large scale events.

Recovery may be a long term process depending on the disaster.  Some areas affected by Hurricane Sandy are still in recovery.  The U.S. Disaster Program assists with the recovery process including financial support.

Does this program sound interesting?  Are you interested in learning more?  Please note that both clergy and lay persons are equally welcome to serve as both Diocesan Disaster coordinators and team members.  Consider attending the training in April.  For further information you may contact the Diocesan Disaster Coordinator, Bob Heindl, at bobmkeff@aol.com or 414-421-0990.

Bob is also available to meet with individual parishes to discuss disaster preparednes.
