Lent at St. Mary's, Dousman

Fully Alive! A Window Into the 2015 Province V Young Adult Retreat by The Rev.  Karl Stevens
Contributed by The Rev. Jonathan Melton, Chaplain at St. Francis House
A line of people stood looking at a small table.  It was empty, but they'd been told that there was a television on it, and asked to describe that television.  "Use the phrase, 'it is,' at the start of your description," John Poole told them.  Hesitantly, people offered their phrases.  "It is black.  It is old.  It is a tube television." John then asked them to describe the television with the phrase 'you are.'  "You are too far away from the couch.  You are heavy.  You smell like cigarettes."  That last phrase stopped John in his tracks, it was so evocative of childhood, of grandmothers who set their ash trays on the top of warm TVs so that the stale smell of cigarettes rose like incense.  Finally, he asked them to describe the television with the phrase 'thou art.'  "Thou art laughter when I'm feeling lonely.  Thou art conversations with my friends.  Thou art rest when I'm tired."  continue reading
Disaster Program Training Available

Free training will be provided by the Episcopal Relief & Development's U.S. Disaster Program in Racine at the DeKoven Center April 20 - 23.  The U.S. Disaster Program tries to better equip dioceses to prepare for and respond to disasters.  The Program has trained diocesan disaster coordinators and team members in more than 70 dioceses since the initiative began in 2011.  At this time the Diocese of Milwaukee has a Diocesan Disaster Coordinator but the program has yet to really get off the ground.  Here is a little bit of back ground information.

Disasters happen.  We don't want them but they still happen.  They may be natural disasters such as tornados or floods or they may be man made such as acts of terrorism.  Disasters may destroy our church building, affect parish members where they live, or devastate an entire community.  People and organizations who have thought about disaster preparedness respond better than those caught unaware.  The U.S. Disaster Program promotes education and disaster preparedness.

The Program responds to disasters starting on the parish level.  Could a church be open in the middle of the night to shelter people homeless due to a flood?  Even the smallest parish might be able to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people with nothing to eat.  The Diocesan Disaster Coordinator or Team can respond to and assist the parish in their efforts.  National staff can respond to large scale events.

Recovery may be a long term process depending on the disaster.  Some areas affected by Hurricane Sandy are still in recovery.  The U.S. Disaster Program assists with the recovery process including financial support.

Does this program sound interesting?  Are you interested in learning more?  Please note that both clergy and lay persons are equally welcome to serve as both Diocesan Disaster coordinators and team members.  Consider attending the training in April.  For further information you may contact the Diocesan Disaster Coordinator, Bob Heindl, at [email protected] or 414-421-0990.

Bob is also available to meet with individual parishes to discuss disaster preparednes.

Exhibit at St. Mark's, Milwaukee gallery features photography of
The Rev. Jana Troutman-Miller
The St. Mark's Art Gallery is proud to present a photography exhibit by The Rev. Jana Troutman-Miller beginning March 1, 2015 and running through the end of April.
Artist's Statement

Surprised by Beauty:

Photography by Jana Troutman-Miller

I loved taking photos even before I knew I loved taking photos. There has always been something about capturing on film, and now digitally, a single moment in time that has been very special to me.

There is nothing better than stumbling upon a moment of beauty and realizing that you have your camera with you! Seeing something special in either the beautiful or mundane, lining up the shot just right, getting home and seeing the image in full resolution, cropping it just so, and then being able to look critically at a piece and knowing that this is a beautiful subject and a beautiful photo.I find the process of cropping a photo in order to draw ones attention on a detail that might otherwise go unnoticed to be especially rewarding.

There is so much in nature that we miss, often through no fault of our own because it is too small, or happens too fast. So to capture those moments in a photo is a gift to the senses and I am most happy when I discover those surprises long after the shot has been taken.

My hope is that my photography will inspire others to keep their cameras on hand and be prepared to capture their own moments where beauty catches them by surprise.

 =============================

Jana Troutman-Miller is an Episcopal priest and health care chaplain. She is currently serving at Saint John's On the Lake in Milwaukee, WI. Jana has been interested in photography since she was a young girl and has a particular love for capturing details in nature and the lines in architecture.

The Gallery is open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, and by appointment by calling (414) 962-0500. St. Mark's is located at 2618 North Hackett Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53211.

Haiti Project - Lenten Opportunities

Bishop Miller will be asking parishes to keep our brothers and sisters in Haiti in their prayers and in their hearts during lent.

It will also be a time to learn more about the good work of the Haiti Project, and to raise much needed funds for the work to continue.  A number of parishes have begun thinking how they can focus on Haiti.

Resources to support these efforts are available HERE and hard copies have been mailed to parishes.
Resources include:

Lenten Meditations - Water for our Spiritual  and Physical Life , These are weekly meditations based on scripture that were compiled by parishioners at Christ Church Whitefish Bay and graciously shared with the Haiti Project.Through the focus on water, Christ Church has raised over $3100.00 which was used to repair badly leaking cisterns.

Lenten Calendar - This  daily walk through lent offers specific ways to better understand how life in Haiti differs from that here.  This is especially helpful for children, but adults will learn as lot as well!

Craft templates and instructions - these are helpful materials for children and include instructions for constructing a tap-tap box. Tap-tap is the term Haitians use for public transportation vehicles and can work much like the UTO offering boxes.

Ideas for special events  - Maybe your parish would like to hold a rice and beans diner,  to raise money  for clean water. Resources will be available, but your parish may have it's own ideas. Feel free to be creative and then share your ideas and success with others!

Speaker forum - invite a missioner who has traveled to Haiti to come present at your education hour or speak during a service or special event. Contact Heidi Ropa, Haiti Project Coordinator at [email protected] to schedule.

SRooster Sell Singing Rooster Coffee - The Haiti Project receives $3.00 from every bag of Singing Rooster coffee sold in the diocese.  If you already sell coffee - commit to selling more!  Use it as a gift for friends, sell at your workplace, serve at coffee hour., etc.   Contact singingrooster.org and Molly Nicaise will send you materials needed to promote sales for this important source of income to the project.

We ARE making a difference in Jeannette. We can all be a part of this meaningful ministry.

Public invited to Lenten Series at Nashotah House
Lenten Soup and Study Series: Bach's Passion Oratorios

Presented by the Rev. Dr. Daniel Westberg, Professor of Ethics and Moral Theology, each week's lesson will delve into background and analysis of the biblical narratives which provide the framework for Bach's St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion oratorios.   For more information and to register for this event (free to the public) click HERE.  Help publicize with bulletin insert

Living Compass offers Lenten Resource

Living Compass is pleased to announce our Lenten resource, Living Well through Lent 2015: Practicing Resilience with All Our Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind. Over the last few years, our seasonal devotionals have become an integral part of Living Compass' work of encouraging and supporting congregations in their mission and ministry. Our Lent 2015 edition is filled with thoughtful reflections from leaders across the Episcopal Church, including an introduction by our Presiding Bishop, the Most Reverend Dr. Katherine Jefferts Schori.

This resource can be used by individuals as a devotional companion for their Lenten journey, and it can also be used as a parish-wide Lenten program. A free program guide, written by the Rev. Shannon Kelly, is available to assist you in your planning and can be used for individual devotions, small groups, a congregational Lenten program, and/or a retreat.
