On Pilgrimage Together
A journey to Assisi crosses the wide cultural gulf between two Zip codes
The following article by The Rev. Seth Raymond appears in this week's edition of The Living Church magazine. It is the story of the remarkable community that has developed between the youth of Christ Church, Whitefish Bay and All People's Church, Milwaukee (ELCA). It is truly a story of pilgrimage, in the many senses of that word.
On Pilgrimage Together In the heat of a mid-summer afternoon below the town of Assisi, pilgrims make their way to one of the remaining leprosaria, La Santa Maria Maddalena. At the front of the procession are two high school boys, one white, one Puerto Rican, warning in loud voices of the leper following close behind. Micah, an African American high-school sophomore, follows with shuffling feet. He is covered with a black cloth, a makeshift pall, draped over his backpack filled with bottled water, a journal, and packets of Nutella. He carries the tentennella, the traditional wooden clapper that warns the locals of his approach.
With a mixture of solemnity and idle chatter, 26 other pilgrims follow in funeral procession behind Micah, knowing that when we arrive at La Maddalena, he will be considered as good as dead. Micah will no longer be called one of our own, but will live out his days in the Umbrian valley, isolated from the townspeople above.
We approach the small stone church and file in. There is not much that impresses our weary travelers about such a humble space. Pilgrims remain quiet as our leper is led to the front of the nave by Brother Tom, our Franciscan guide. Brother Tom leads us in a reflection on alienation, separation, being different. He asks each of us to write a poem on the theme of bullying and read it aloud. We then enter a sacred moment of ritual hand-washing, each pilgrim washing the hands of the next, enacting a humble service to the outcast and lepers among us.

Exhibit at St. Mark's, Milwaukee gallery features photography of The Rev. Jana Troutman-Miller
The St. Mark's Art Gallery is proud to present a photography exhibit by The Rev. Jana Troutman-Miller beginning March 1, 2015 and running through the end of April.
Artist's Statement
Surprised by Beauty:
Photography by Jana Troutman-Miller
I loved taking photos even before I knew I loved taking photos. There has always been something about capturing on film, and now digitally, a single moment in time that has been very special to me.
There is nothing better than stumbling upon a moment of beauty and realizing that you have your camera with you! Seeing something special in either the beautiful or mundane, lining up the shot just right, getting home and seeing the image in full resolution, cropping it just so, and then being able to look critically at a piece and knowing that this is a beautiful subject and a beautiful photo.I find the process of cropping a photo in order to draw ones attention on a detail that might otherwise go unnoticed to be especially rewarding.
There is so much in nature that we miss, often through no fault of our own because it is too small, or happens too fast. So to capture those moments in a photo is a gift to the senses and I am most happy when I discover those surprises long after the shot has been taken.
My hope is that my photography will inspire others to keep their cameras on hand and be prepared to capture their own moments where beauty catches them by surprise.
=============================
Jana Troutman-Miller is an Episcopal priest and health care chaplain. She is currently serving at Saint John's On the Lake in Milwaukee, WI. Jana has been interested in photography since she was a young girl and has a particular love for capturing details in nature and the lines in architecture.
The Gallery is open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, and by appointment by calling (414) 962-0500. St. Mark's is located at 2618 North Hackett Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53211.

Haiti Project - Lenten Opportunities
Bishop Miller will be asking parishes to keep our brothers and sisters in Haiti in their prayers and in their hearts during lent.
It will also be a time to learn more about the good work of the Haiti Project, and to raise much needed funds for the work to continue. A number of parishes have begun thinking how they can focus on Haiti.
Resources to support these efforts are available HERE and hard copies have been mailed to parishes.
Resources include:
Lenten Meditations - Water for our Spiritual and Physical Life , These are weekly medita tions based on scripture that were compiled by parishioners at Christ Church Whitefish Bay and graciously shared with the Haiti Project.Through the focus on water, Christ Church has raised over $3100.00 which was used to repair badly leaking cisterns. Lenten Calendar - This daily walk through lent offers specific ways to better understand how life in Haiti differs from that here. This is especially helpful for children, but adults will learn as lot as well! Craft templates and instructions - these are helpful materials for children and include instructions for constructing a tap-tap box. Tap-tap is the term Haitians use for public transportation vehicles and can work much like the UTO offering boxes. Ideas for special events - Maybe your parish would like to hold a rice and beans diner, to raise money for clean water. Resources will be available, but your parish may have it's own ideas. Feel free to be creative and then share your ideas and success with others! Speaker forum - invite a missioner who has traveled to Haiti to come present at your education hour or speak during a service or special event. Contact Heidi Ropa, Haiti Project Coordinator at haitiproject14@gmail.com to schedule. Sell Singing Rooster Coffee - The Haiti Project receives $3.00 from every bag of Singing Rooster coffee sold in the diocese. If you already sell coffee - commit to selling more! Use it as a gift for friends, sell at your workplace, serve at coffee hour., etc. Contact singingrooster.org and Molly Nicaise will send you materials needed to promote sales for this important source of income to the project. We ARE making a difference in Jeannette. We can all be a part of this meaningful ministry. |
