VOLUNTEERS needed for 2014 Diocesan Convention

We are looking for volunteers for the 2014 Diocesan Convention, to be held at Madison Marriott West Hotel off the West Beltline, Friday and Saturday, October 10-11. We need about 25 people to help support the convention.

Two kinds of volunteers are being sought:  registration/hospitality volunteers and tellers for the business meeting.

  •  FRIDAY -- Registration/hospitality volunteers work 3-4 hour shifts from 11:00 through 6:30.  Responsibilities include working at the registration desk or helping people find their way around the conference center during the Friday afternoon sessions, Eucharist, social hour, and dinner. If you are a voting deputy, it's best to help on Friday. If you are already planning to attend a workshop - but you're not teaching it! - you could easily be the room monitor and fill a volunteer slot too.
  • SATURDAY -- Volunteers will be needed in registration and "shepherding" from 7:30-10.  In addition, eight tellers will be needed for the business meeting from 8:00 - noon.  The convention ends with lunch on Saturday.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Diane Brown of St. Luke's Madison at diane@floods.org or 608-444-6707 as soon as possible.  Kindly indicate which type of volunteer role you'd prefer, as well as limitations.   Continental breakfast/ box lunch will be provided for volunteers on Saturday.  Friday's volunteers are invited and encouraged to stay for the banquet -- just let Diane Brown know so we can include you in the count.  (Friday dinner or Saturday lunch) with the deputies. If you have questions, please ask Diane directly and she will respond as quickly as answers are available.

Thank you for your consideration,

Diane Brown, Convention Planning Committee

Waking up to my Whiteness

by Rev. Scott Anderson, Executive Director WCC

Reprinted with permission from the Sept. 2014 edition of Ecunews

Moving to Madison from Sacramento, California-named TIME magazine's "Most Integrated City in America" in 2003-was a rude awakening. Within a week I was conscious that my work and neighborhood environments were virtually all white.

Within a year I had reached the conclusion that race was the elephant in the middle of Wisconsin's living room, overshadowing every political, social, and cultural issue in this state.

The dismal and morally outrageous statistics are all too familiar.  This past spring, the nonpartisan Annie E. Casey Foundation issued a report showing Wisconsin ranked 50th out of 50 states in the well-being of Black children.

A Celebration in Lake Geneva

When Bishop Miller made his episcopal Visitation to the Church of the Holy Communion, Lake Geneva on September 7th, the parish seized the to have a lighthearted"family portrait" made (it was the Bishop' suggestion for everyone to wave at the camera!). Posing with Bishop Miller and The Rev. Bill McLemore, priest-in-charge, are a number of visitors, including Bishop Miller's wife, Cindy and The Rev. Carla McCook, Bishop's Assistant for Christian Formation.

In a slightly more formal photograph, the Bishop is pictured with those who were received/confirmed Left to right: March Lee Gibbs (confirmed), Meghan Grace McGrath (confirmed), Bishop Miller, Thomas Bo Freytag (confirmed), Scott Anthony Melancon (received), and Gerald Richard Gibbs (received).   Both these  photos were taken by Lake Geneva parishioner Donald O. Wehrenberg.  A professional photographer, Mr. Wehrenberg serves as the parish photographer.

Parishes are urged and reminded to share THEIR photos with the E-NEWS -- send to info@diomil.org !!  Thank you!
Deacons' Formation School (DFS)

The Deacons' Formation School (DFS) has started its second academic year at The DeKoven Center in Racine. We've doubled our class size!

I want to introduce to you (from left to right in photo) Cliff Perkins, Esther Kramer, Director Rev. Carla McCook, Nancy Hills and Bill Dunlop.

Our school meets once a month from September through June for a full Saturday through Sunday weekend. Our students study scripture, theology, spiritual traditions, liturgical practicum and preaching, church history and the Diakonia (servant ministry and community organizing).

The DFS is open to all deacons and presbyter to attend for continuing education, too. To register go to the diocesan website on the Deacons' Formation School page. All school information and registration is available there. If you are discerning the call to the ordination of the vocational diaconate, I invite you to check out our webpage, too. The manual for the diaconal process and all necessary paperwork, schedules, course descriptions and the DFS Handbook are all posted and made available to you. If you have questions, feel free to contact Rev. Carla McCook, mccook@diomil.org.

New Intergenerational Book/E-Book

Faith is transmitted from generation to generation in extended families and intergenerational congregations. Every congregation can discover its intergenerational heart and soul, and become an intentionally intergenerational community that nurtures the faith of all ages and equips them for living as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today.

Generations Together presents the vision of a congregation that is becoming more intentionally intergenerational through its congregational life of caring, celebrating, learning, prayer, and serving. When a congregation commits itself to building a culture of intergenerationality through these five elements, each element becomes a sign of and instrument for the full experience of the Body of Christ by all ages and generations.
Generations Together

guides leaders in learning what this vision looks like in practice and how to guide a congregation in envisioning and designing projects and initiative to become more intentionally intergenerational.

Madison, WI  53705

What is a Julian Gathering?  A Julian Gathering is open to everyone and you are welcome at all times.  We support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality.  These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org) and have the quintessentially Anglican writings of Bl. Mother Julian of Norwich at their core.  They are for all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing.  Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer and reading/discussion of Bl. Julian's revelations.  Don't worry if you've never practiced silent prayer before, we can set your mind at ease.   We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM.  For additional information, contact Susan Fiore, ObJN: (608) 845-2413 or slfiore@mac.com.

Please Help the Homeless of Milwaukee by supporting Sundries on the Avenue & Red Door at Diocesan Convention

Daily, too many of our economically distressed brothers and sisters in the Milwaukee area ask themselves the following question,

"Do I buy food, medicine or hygiene products?"

St. James Episcopal Church is delighted to help answer that question through the ministry of "Sundries from The Avenue." Working in concert with Outreach Ministry of the Central City Churches of Milwaukee, "Sundries from The Avenue" gathers and provides sundries at no cost to single adults and families living on low-incomes, on fixed-incomes or with no incomes.

Please join us in helping meet a critical need by bringing the following unused personal size or individually wrapped sundries to the Diocesan Convention on October 10-11, 2014 at the Madison Marriott West in Madison.

Items needed include:

Tooth Brushes,Toothpaste, Shampoo, Soap, Kleenex, Deodorant, Disposable Razors, Mouthwash, Feminine Hygiene Products, Combs, Hair Brushes, Shaving Cream, Lip Balm, Dental Floss, Band aids, Bandages, and  Hand Lotion.

Gently used or new jeans are also being collected for the Red Door clothing ministry.  Greatest need is for MEN'S jeans in large/extra large sizes.  Please bring jeans to the "Sundries" display at Convention.

Thank you!  Together we can make a meaningful difference!

Learn More about your Faith!
EFM is a distance learning program administered by the School of Theology of the University of the South at Sewanee.  It is an in-depth program of theological education that seeks to expose laypersons to theological studies and to help them to integrate those studies into their lives and ministry.
EFM has two components.  The first component is study.  The program is a four-year course that you commit to one year at a time.  In the first year, you study the Old Testament.  In the second, the New Testament.  In the third, Church History, and in the fourth, Christian Theology.  Many of the texts are the same ones used in our Episcopal seminaries.
The second component is weekly group meetings, where readings are discussed and we enter into theological reflection, which connects our own experience to our Christian heritage.  It is truly an amazing process that has to be experienced to be understood.
The commitment is significant.  It requires a meeting a week and several hours of study time. Our meeting time is Thursday night.   This is an adult learning environment, so there are no tests or quizzes, but you get out of it what you put into it.  There is a tuition cost of $350 for the year (reduced if couples sign up), but there are scholarships available from many sources.  PLEASE, if money is stopping you, don't let it.  We will make sure that anyone who wishes to participate will not be turned aside for monetary reasons. We have scholarship aid available from the parish, the diocese, and Sewanee.  I myself needed financial support for several of my years of EFM.
You can get more information at the EFM website .  If you are interested, please e-mail me and let me know. dsimmons@mac.com .
