Standing Committee Report to the Bishop on Blessing of Same Gender *Relationships
In the summer of 2013 the Diocese of Milwaukee Standing Committee  accepted a charge by Bishop Miller that asked them, acting in their role as a council of advice, to seek a 'generous, pastoral liturgical' response to couples asking to have their same-gender marriages blessed. After conducting a survey, reviewing the more than 500 pages of input the survey generated, the Standing Committee has issued a report to Bishop Miller on their findings and has made recommendations, as well.
Hard copies of the report were mailed to the parishes of the diocese c/o priest in charge.  The report, at Bishop Miller's direction, has also been e-mailed to parishes and clergy of the diocese and shared with the diocese at large by this website posting and via a link to this post in the diocese's weekly electronic newsletter, The E-NEWS, which  all members of the diocese may elect to receive.

Click HERE to read the report and the cover letter from the Standing Committee.

What does it mean to be community?
by Peggy Bean, Canon for Parishes

What does it mean to be community? We know as we look at our congregations there is a lot that happens in the parish community both in mission and ministry and there are many individuals apart from one's parish who are active in a variety of communities.

But what about us as a Diocesan community, what does that look like? The Commission on Mission and Development has pondered that question over the last few years and continues to hold that question up as we do our work.

We believe by building relationships, in offering support (financially, educationally, and prayerfully) and by journeying with others into the wider world we form Diocesan Community. Together we are building stronger congregations, forming disciples and doing the work of the Kingdom.

The Rev. Mike Tess, Vicar of Good Shepherd in Sun Prairie and I are looking into the issues of hospitality in a multicultural world. We started asking questions such as: How are our congregations in truly welcoming those who come from different parts of the globe? What does the word welcome really mean and specifically how do we show it? Is our community really open to all in our neighborhoods?   Do we know who are neighbors are and if they were to come into our churches what would they see and feel? Would this be a place they would truly feel welcomed into?

Rest in Peace . . .

The Rev. Seth Dietrich, rector of Christ Church, Whitefish Bay, sends word that his father, Bill Dietrich, passed into the nearer presence of Christ this morning surrounded by his family in Austin, TX. Mr. Dietrich had sojourned through many different Christian communities, for many years attending St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin. He had lately settled on a small Baptist church in his neighborhood, from which he will be buried on Saturday.   Please hold Bill, Seth and their families in prayer.

Julian's era was one of turmoil and crisis. Contemporary reports indicate that at least half the population of Norwich died from the Plague; the clergy and undertakers could not keep up with the dead bodies. Meanwhile, disease killed the cattle, and harvests failed. In 1381, when Julian was thirty-nine, people became so desperate they rose up in a revolt, looting the churches and monasteries.

During Julian's lifetime, John Wyclif was also preaching against the corruption in the Church; his translation of the Bible into the common language of English brought down on him papal accusations of heresy. Wyclif and his followers, the Lollards, believed God should be made directly available to ordinary people, without the intercession of the clergy. The clerical hierarchy was so incensed that the Bishop of Norwich received permission from Rome to execute any Lollards he captured. Wyclif's followers were burned alive in a pit less than a mile from Julian's cell.

Meanwhile, the larger world beyond Norfolk and England was also in a state of upheaval. Five years before Julian was born, in 1337, the Hundred Years War between England and France had begun, and it would continue throughout her lifetime. The Great Schism split the Church in 1377, with one pope in France, the other in Rome.

And in the midst of all this, Julian came to believe unshakably that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."

Celebrating Mission and Development in the Diocese!

Did you know that there are eight congregations in the diocese who are in the midst of capital campaigns? These congregations are doing campaigns for a variety of different reasons, everything from debt retirement to building projects. The congregations are also choosing to do their campaigns in many different ways; some are using consultants and companies, others are managing the campaigns themselves. Regardless of how they are doing the campaigns and the reasons why, we celebrate the fact that so many churches are in the midst of exciting visioning and planning for their future! It is an exciting time for these congregations, and please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. For more information on capital campaigns please visit http://www.ecfvp.org/webinars/transformation-by-capital-campaign/  or The James Company website .

If you have specific questions about campaigns in our diocese, please contact Peggy Bean at bean@diomil.org.

by Peggy Bean, Canon for Parishes

This year we will have consolidated the two grants into one application - the 2014 Ministry Development Grant Application. It can be found on the website on the Mission and Development page.

We are offering Ministry grants up to $1,000 and Development grants up to $5,000.  Check the application for details.  Also note there are two different due dates -  June 15th and October 15th.  We did this knowing some of you have projects needing funding right now and others are still in the planning stage and may need it later.  We look forward to learning about your projects.
