Bishop Miller's reflections on the 30th anniversary of his graduation from seminary

Dear Friends in Christ,

This week I was in New York City for the meeting of the Board of Trustees of The General Theological Seminary and for this year 's commencement exercises. While the ceremony, written by Dean Samuel Augustus Hoffman and virtually unchanged since 1887, is always moving, it was particularly so this year as it was also the 30th anniversary of my graduation from General in 1984.

As I rode to the airport to catch my return flight to Milwaukee (with the strains of Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson songs from the year 1984 coming through the taxicab's radio), I began to reflect on all that had happened in my life since that graduation day --- ordination as deacon and priest, my marriage to Cindy and the birth of our daughters, and the call to serve as your bishop eleven years ago. I remembered all those who have accompanied me on this journey and shaped who I am today, especially those who now live in the nearer presence of God. I cherish these memories and give thanks for all God's blessings over all these years.

Our past makes us who who we are, both as individuals and as the people of God. But our faith also calls us to look to the future and to that day when God's will and reign will come in its fullness-- a truth that was brought into perspective by the fact that on this trip I stayed with the Sisters of the Community of the Holy Spirit, an Episcopal religious community I had come to know best through members of a former parish who were associates. At the daily office on the morning of graduation, I heard these words from the apostle Paul, "Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on to the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." I heard an echo of this later when in a conversation about heaven Sister Elise, over sixty years in religious vows said, "It's the only option I have."

God has a great things ahead for us, both in this life and in the world to come. We know this because we know that God raised Jesus from the dead!

Yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller

Bishop of Milwaukee

Parish Financial Aid / Grant Applications now available!
by Peggy Bean, Canon for Parishes

In years past The Commission on Mission and Development offered Challenge grants for $1,000 and Meachem Fund grants for up to $5,000. This year we will have consolidated the two grants into one application - the 2014 Ministry Development Grant Application. It can be found on the website on the Mission and Development page.

We are offering Ministry grants up to $1,000 and Development grants up to $5,000.  Check the application for details.  Also note there are two different due dates -  June 15th and October 15th.  We did this knowing some of you have projects needing funding right now and others are still in the planning stage and may need it later.  We look forward to learning about your projects.

The 2015 Application for Financial Aid is also available on the Mission and Development page.  The due date for completion is July 15, 2014.  Questions on any of the grants please contact Peggy Bean at 414-272-3028 or bean@diomil.org

Episcopal Service Corp intern Dan Rocklin shares his thoughts on a year of ministry in our midst

Writing about this past year is a bit of a difficult endeavor for me, as it seems like so much has happened in such a relatively short span of time! I arrived in Milwaukee by way of Iowa City just this past September, with a car full of luggage and a head full of mild but persistent anxiety. I had so many questions: What would my internship be like? What would my housemates be like? Would I like Milwaukee?

The question that was answered first was the one about my housemates. I quickly found out that I would be living with 4 other young adults, each with their own peculiarities, but united in their kindness, creativity, and desire to make a difference in the world. Living with them has been a joy, and I am deeply grateful for having the opportunity to meet each one of them.

I was also able to quickly put aside any worries I had about my internship. From day one I was made to feel comfortable at Living Compass, and was invited to work on projects that interested me and would help me grow professionally. With the support of fantastic co-workers, I've gotten an opportunity to practice my primary interest, graphic design, on a variety of projects, including creating digital memes, preparing large documents, and designing marketing materials. I've also gotten to edit and produce video for the organization, and helped manage Living Compass's social media presence. My position truly has given me an extraordinary opportunity to both work on projects that I find engaging, while also supporting an organization whose mission I deeply support.

Of course, as much as I love my internship, I couldn't really feel as positively as I do about this experience had I disliked Milwaukee. Luckily, Milwaukee is an awesome city that I thoroughly enjoyed exploring. As an avid cyclist, I've been all over the city's scenic bike routes, and get to ride along the lakefront most days on my way to work. Milwaukee also fulfills one of my most important criterion for evaluating a city: a robust and convenient public library system. Other great things about Milwaukee that I got to experience first-hand: Monthly free days at the art museum and the public museum, inexpensive tickets to watch the lovable Bucks lose games in creative ways, and a great collection of colleges and universities that often put on events that are free and open to the public. Oh, and Milwaukee's great collection of breweries doesn't hurt its reputation in my eyes either

As my time here draws to a close and I begin to look forward to the next part of my life (I'll be trading the tundra of Wisconsin for the desert of central Texas), I feel immensely grateful for the experiences I've had this past year. Thank you to my housemates, the good folk at Living Compass, and Amy Clark, the architect of Creating for a Cause!

Support ONG - sponsor a child's swimming lessons this summer at Washington Park!

Do you know that:

  • Participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children aged 1 to 4 years? 70% of African-American and 60% of Hispanic/Latino children cannot swim.
  • African-American children drown at a rate of nearly 3 times higher than their Caucasian peers?

In 2013, approximately 75 children from the Our Next Generation summer program received free swim lessons at the Washington Park pool. Some of the children at our program didn't participate because they did not have basic swim gear - swimsuits, goggles, caps, and towels.

Free swim lessons will be available again this summer. Our goal is to have more children learn to swim. We hope to provide equipment to them. It costs about $65 to outfit a swimmer with a swimsuit, cap, goggles, and towel. You can sponsor as many swimmers as you like at $65 each. Or, you can contribute funds to purchase individual pieces of swim equipment - Cap ($8); swimsuit ($40); goggles ($12); or towel ($4). Please make checks payable to Our Next Generation and write "Swimming Equipment" on the memo line. Send to 3421 W. Lisbon Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53208 or donate online at www.ongkids.org. Click here for more information about the free swim lessons at Washington Park.
