After Three Days I will Rise Again:
a message at Easter from Bishop Miller

The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63and said, 'Sir, we remember what that impostor said while he was still alive, "After three days I will rise again." 64Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day; otherwise his disciples may go and steal him away, and tell the people, "He has been raised from the dead", and the last deception would be worse than the first.' 65Pilate said to them, 'You have a guard* of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can.'*66So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone. Matthew 27:62-66

Dear Friends in Christ,

The opening cut on Pat Matheny's album First Circle is a dissonant and farcical march entitled simply, "Forward March." I don't know what inspired him to write the piece but every time I hear it I picture the guards placed by Pilate and the authorities at the tomb of Jesus. I picture them parading around the tomb filled with self-importance and certainty of purpose looking as silly as the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion do when the don the uniforms of the guards at the castle of the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz while fulfilling their mission to make the tomb of Jesus as secure as they could.

Our faith helps us to see the humor in that command from Pilate, "Go, make it as secure as you can." We know that nothing can hold God's love in. God's love and power burst forth from the tomb and the stone is rolled away to reveal that it is so. God's love is so great that nothing can hold it in.

The resurrection of Jesus is God the Father's action to show us God's faithfulness. On the cross Jesus commends himself to the Father. In the resurrection we see the result of that commendation. God is faithful to those who are faithful to him.

While nothing can hold God's love in, I know both as a pastor and fellow traveler on the way that at times our human failings-pride, fear, prejudice, lack of charity toward ourselves and others, unwillingness and inability to accept that we are loved-can keep that power from working fully in us. These things are what the poet Michael Hare Duke means when he writes in his Easter poem/prayer, "the grave clothes hold us, they are all we know, grant us the courage to be loosed and live."

Grant us the courage to be loosed and lived. That is my prayer for all of us this Easter. May God grant us the courage to be loosed from the grave clothes of doubt, fear, self-righteousness, and pride that we might live a life that shows the power of resurrection by and through our complete trust of the Father through our imitation of Christ.

Yours in the Risen and living Lord Jesus,

The Rt. Rev. Steven Andrew Miller

Bishop of Milwaukee

We welcome everyone who is interested in learning more about contemplative spirituality in the Christian tradition.  We meet monthly for contemplative prayer for twenty-five minutes, after which we discuss a reading from Julian of Norwich, a 14th Century English mystic who has been called "a theologian for our time."  These gatherings are supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich, a contemplative monastic order in the Episcopal Church.  We would love to have you join us.  If you have questions, call Susan Fiore, ObJN at (608) 845-2413 or e-mail at slfiore@mac.com.

Taking The Cross Into The World:  A Good Friday Pilgrimage

On Good Friday morning, the Church will leave the building. Echoing the very public execution of Jesus, several Milwaukee and Madison area Episcopal parishes will participate in bringing the Stations of the Cross into the city streets.

The Milwaukee pilgrimage will begin at All Saints Episcopal Cathedral at 9 a.m. April 18th, where a wooden cross will be carried to eight stations that represent places of power, desolation and comfort. At each station, a nail will be driven into the cross, a piece of the Good Friday Scripture read, and a prayer or hymn offered. Participants and passer-bys will then be invited to write a short prayer and place it on the cross. The walk is approximately 3.5 miles. Anyone may participate and anyone may join or leave the journey at any of the stations. Our pilgrimage will end at St. James Episcopal Church on Wisconsin Avenue sometime between 11 and 11:30 a.m. A bus will be available to take participants back to the All Saints Cathedral.

The Stations of the Cross in Downtown Madison, will be held on Friday, April 11th at 12pm. As we walk the fourteen traditional Stations of the Cross, we will reflect together on how we can trace those events in the geography of Madison today - our issues, stories and struggles. We will start on the sidewalk near the Federal Courthouse, across from the Overture Center, and end in the garden at Grace Church on the square. The total walk will be about 1.2 miles. All are welcome.

Holy Living: A Diocesan Lenten Study

by The Rev. Carla McCook, Bishop's Assistant for Christian Formation
As Bishop Miller wrote in his Lenten Meditation, the season of Lent is a time for the faithful to take on a spiritual discipline rather than a season of giving something up. In our new Holy Living video series we invite folks to go deeper in spiritual disciplines. Each Sunday we'll post a new video introducing a new spiritual discipline, and invite you to put them into practice and try them out for the following week. Some of these practices may be new to you, while others may be long-practiced disciplines. Below each video, you'll see a link to the In-Formation blog, where you can participate by asking questions or commenting and encouraging others during this season of Holy Living. Tell us if you try these spiritual practices, and let us know how they enrich your Lenten journey! We hope that this Lenten study will support each of us as we practice Holy Living, to grow deeper in our relationship with our Lord. Access videos and accompanying information HERE.

Con Vivo! camber music ensemble
son.
Performing will be Con Vivo!, a professional chamber music ensemble founded in 2002.  Con Vivo! is comprised of seven core musicians who draw upon professional experience with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and other regional performing groups. They will be performing the Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet, KV 581 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart which was first performed at a Composer's Society concert in December of 1789.  The piece is in the traditional four movements: an opening sonata movement, followed by an aria type Larghetto, then a minuet with two trios, and finally a theme and variation last movement. The quintet is considered one of the central compositions of chamber music and the clarinet repertoire. They will also be performing
Mozart's Divertimento in F Major which has an Italian grace and charm, suggesting that the ideas for this music came to Mozart-if they weren't in fact written down-while he was in Milan.
