A message of thanks

Thank you to those who spent this past Saturday with us discussing mission. We hope the conversations will continue and perhaps you have gained some new insights into how mission fuels all we do - financially, in the community (in our walls and outside of them) and personally.  We appreciate the ministries you are all engaged in and am grateful to those who brought material to share with one another.  If you did not get the pdf files from the workshop in an email from me this week please email me requesting them at bean@diomil.org.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Leadership day, as a participant in Church Development Institute or a Mission and Development workshop at Convention.  Thank you again for you commitment to leading in your congregation.

Blessings,
Peggy Bean

Lake Country Episcopal Churches share
a Lenten experience

Members of Lake Country churches at Lenten gathering
The Lake Country Episcopal Churches kicked off their Lenten programs together this year!  Using the diocese's "Living a Holy Lent" series on various spiritual disciplines as a starting point over 40 people from  St. John's Chrysostom in Delafield, St. Anskar's in Hartland, St. Bartholomew's in Pewaukee, St. Alban's in Sussex and Zion, Oconomowoc joined together for an evening of fellowship and learning at St. Alban's in Sussex.  Starting with a light supper of soup, salad, and bread the participants were nourished by food and conversation.  The program utilized this week's video on living a rule of life (http://www.diomil.org/forming-disciples/living-a-holy-lent/) provided by this week's lecturer, Fr. David Simmons from St. Matthias', as it's topic.  After viewing the video, Fr. Steve Capitelli from St. Alban's and Fr. Greg Wilde from St. Bartholomew's led the lecture and discussion portion of the evening.
The event was planned as a project of the newly formed Lake Country Episcopal Churches.  This group is attempting to work together, sharing resources and information, and encouraging each other as we all live out being a small Episcopal church in 2014.  It is hoped by facinging challenges together we can accomplish what God has planned for us. The Lenten project included two dates the area churches would come together to share part of Lent with each other. The first, Wednesday March 12 is now in the books.  The next opportunity will be Wednesday, April 9th at St. Anskar's, Hartland.  Want to know more contact any of the Lake Country Episcopal Churches!!
Monstrance rocks on
St. Christopher's Outreach Committee Shouts Out a Big Thank You to the Diocese
The weather was somewhat uncertain but the support for the Monstrance Rock Concert on Friday night, February 28, was strong and bold and much better than a good cup of coffee. Thanks to all of you who supported us in person and in spirit.   With more than
  • 165 people in attendance and
  • over $4300 raised for the great causes
    • Red Door Clothes (St. James, Milwaukee & Trinity, Wauwatosa)
    • Hospitality Center (St. Luke's, Racine)

the evening was declared a great success. Ran Hamner, MC Extraordinaire, revved up the crowd with his opening remarks, and the recipients of the money raised (Deacon Kevin Stewart, Jane Johnson & Gust Olson) spoke eloquently and passionately about the needs in their communities and how the freewill donations will support their efforts for people in need. The music continued for longer than we had planned because of audience enthusiasm, and everyone seemed to leave St. Christopher's with a big smile on their face and rock rhythm in their steps. Underwritten by the St. Christopher's Endowment, the St. Christopher's Outreach Committee shouts out a Big Thank You to the Diocese.

Newala celebrates the bishop's  new piki piki . . . also known as a motorcycle!
Bishop Oscar Mnung'a and a Diocese of Newala priest prepare to try out the brand new piki piki (motorcycle)
Bishop Oscar Mnung'a and the Diocese of Newala have sent thanks to the Diocese of Milwaukee and the Companion Diocese Committee for the new motorcycle they have received to aid the bishop in his ministry, which requires traveling to parishes over very rough or non-existent roads in Tanzania.
The bulk of the funds to purchase the motorcycle, called a piki piki in Newala, was raised by St. Luke's, Madison.  The parish's seniors hold a huge rummage sale each year, which requires working all summer collecting, sorting and pricing sale items.  Proceeds of 2013's rummage sale were in large part used to purchase the motorcycle.
St. Luke's rector, The Rev. Paula Harris, chairs the diocese's Companion Diocese Committee which fosters the relationship between the Diocese of Milwaukee and the Diocese of Newala.
JAZZ FOR GOOD concert supports Training of Nurses in Diocese of Newala
Student nurses in Newala

JAZZ FOR GOOD Concert on Saturday, April 5 at 7pm at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, located at 6205 University Avenue in Madison, Wisconsin. Local jazz trio Chance Allies, with guest percussionist and clergy husband Phil Hassett (husband of The Rev. Miranda Hassett, rector of St. Dunstan's), will play jazz standards. Suggested donation $10, with all donations to go directly to supporting training for nurses in the Anglican Diocese of Newala, through the Diocese of Milwaukee's companion diocese relationship.

In Newala, in southern Tanzania, church-run health clinics provide much-needed care in poor, rural areas, but need more workers - and young church members can't afford vocational training. It costs $700 to train a nurse in Tanzania!

Come enjoy an evening of great music for a great cause, and bring a friend! St. Dunstan's has a parking lot and is handicapped-accessible. Questions? Call (608) 238-2781.

Holy Living: A Diocesan Lenten Study

by The Rev. Carla McCook, Bishop's Assistant for Christian Formation
As Bishop Miller wrote in his Lenten Meditation, the season of Lent is a time for the faithful to take on a spiritual discipline rather than a season of giving something up. In our new Holy Living video series we invite folks to go deeper in spiritual disciplines. Each Sunday we'll post a new video introducing a new spiritual discipline, and invite you to put them into practice and try them out for the following week. Some of these practices may be new to you, while others may be long-practiced disciplines. Below each video, you'll see a link to the In-Formation blog, where you can participate by asking questions or commenting and encouraging others during this season of Holy Living. Tell us if you try these spiritual practices, and let us know how they enrich your Lenten journey! We hope that this Lenten study will support each of us as we practice Holy Living, to grow deeper in our relationship with our Lord.

LIVING BY A RULE

about LIVING BY A RULE

We all have personal Rules of Life, whether we admit it or not, the habits that govern how we live.  As followers of Christ, the question becomes, "does the Rule I currently live move me closer to or further away from God?"  Working with a Rule of Life is a way to assess and change our habits to set us in the right direction.  A rule should not be something burdensome.  It should literally be a measure, a rule, an assessment tool, of our spiritual life.  No one ever lives a rule perfectly.  It is instead the measure we return to when we realize we have come up short in our spiritual lives.

Here is a page with links and resources that you may use as you consider your rule of life: http://ruleoflife.frdavid.org
